      I swear my neighbors must think that. 2 are police officers. When talking to them I sometimes drop hints that I recover and refine PM's. Worse is that I do it at night with my backyard lit up. They have to think Im tweeking. LOL

    Is there a way to fix things if it crystalizes?

  • @korpse6rinder
    @korpse6rinder 3 ปีที่แล้ว +4

    You need to get a pyrex catch pan. You don't want silver to go everywhere when a beaker cracks or boils over

  • @Surtac100
    @Surtac100 3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

    Do you have to put a lid on the beaker after you drop in silver?

    • @ChildersCastingandRefining
      @ChildersCastingandRefining  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      You don’t have to but it helps ensure that there aren’t any contaminants getting into the solution.

    • @williamjohnson2105
      @williamjohnson2105 3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      leaving the lid on also makes the acid work longer, losing potency to off-gassing less rapidly.

    • @Brenna754
      @Brenna754 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Yes it’s better to have the lid. The fumes will condense on the lid and drip nitric acid back into the container. Prolonging the reaction as William also stated

  • @canonsonico3752
    @canonsonico3752 ปีที่แล้ว +3

    If u worry much about nitric cost, just distill the fumes and bubble it though water. Dont know if it is even worth it but ive seen it done

    Hey Bub don’t do it next to your car fumes will rust it and second magnetic stirrer won’t be affected by the acid because it’s acid proof plastic coated

    • @ChildersCastingandRefining
      @ChildersCastingandRefining  2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Found that out later on the stirrer. Thanks for the anti rust tip. My cars are rusty already, but I don’t need to help the rust get worse.

    Some advice might help get some bakeing soda and keep it on hand if you spill acid on anything it will neutralize it rinse with water and bakeing soda its saved my clothing tools and skin.

    a few improvements;
    You can submerg your silver buy just cutting it up and bending it, silver is pretty soft so its easy - also a hacksaw is cheap
    - Instant cold packs (ammonia nitrate) and draincleaner (sulphric acid) will make Nitric Acid, and this is cheaper than buying it. (If you cant get cold packs or fertilizer use potash - but this will be a very slow reaction and your electricity bill will cost more.
    - You can just add some copper and it will kick out the silver but not the copper. This only works for sterling silver and silver which is purely copper and silver.
    -also to clean up your nitric acid drops and stuff you can use lime juice.

    Can nitric acid will help in separating silver from zinc?

    • @ChildersCastingandRefining
      @ChildersCastingandRefining  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      That should work.

    • @burnroe6611
      @burnroe6611 3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      I would first treat with hydrochloric acid to dissolve the zinc wash it down a few times with ditilled water then if you want it higher purity dissolve it in nitric .

    Hi. Where did you order that nitric acid from?

  • @alexoja2918
    @alexoja2918 ปีที่แล้ว +2

    I refined 40-50g silver in my kitchen. Not recommended. Do outside. The fumes are more abundant and way worse than you might think. I did the precipitation with cheap copper though, and even recovered the copper. Displacements are easy and cheap.

      It's a common mistake guys believe. Can be a covid mask, or gas mask, they will protect you the same. Or rather... 🤔 niether mask will filter out these noxious fumes, they just won't. I wear a medical mask outside just to avoid smb smell at gold drops, and to make my wife feel better. I realize it won't save anyone. People gotta be smart and learn, don't be a monkey that can just copy others process. Learn the science of it before you start doing it. 🙏

    Also sodium bicarbonate or baking soda is the only thing that would neutralize that acid if an accident were to happen

    200 ml of 70% hno3 all at once is not good idea... also cut your material into smaller pieces next time to prevent those pieces dropping in and splashing or breaking container... also u said u rinsed clean? Heat over propane torch or grill or something like that to remove oils and dirt and polishes and other chemicals/combustibles

    Not bending the silverware so it is fully in the acid was surely a mistake.

  • @dennisgeroux4483
    @dennisgeroux4483 2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

    Why don’t you do that in the back yard so you don’t freak out the neighbors. You should pour your Nitric acid slower, it gets violent when added too fast, I know it was only water but a bad habit might get a foam over if you forget to go slow.

    Dude your mom's going to be pissed when she catches you dissolving her silverware. Gotta cut it up first so its unrecognizable by the time she gets home.
