I don't mean to burst anyone's bubble but Merle didn't teach his youngest son, Ben, the one singing the song, to play the guitar. I saw an interview with Ben, Noel and Marty, Merle's three sons and Ben said that he taught himself how to play the guitar and didn't want his dad to hear him because he didn't think he was very good. Merle finally heard him and put him in his band. I don't know if Merle taught the two older sons to play, they didn't say.
Nothing is better than these two! Today I started loving country outlaw again!

In Washington State - i was working there that night after his concert as part of the clean up crew..
Went outside for a smoke break only one place we could go,
outside of security gates -
Merle came off his bus & walked right past me, i wasn't able to get to close - but was able to say hello to him - his reply was
OH FEELING A LITTLE OLD..
That's when i yeld out,
SING ME BACK HOME MERLE.?.!.
his response was priceless,
he said

I'll never forget that day, he was so awesome & down to earth..

My Father was a professional Country Singer before he passed away in 1982, he allready made an album out in 1969 & had sold lots of copies..
He was working on his second set of songs for a second album,
unfortunately he never got a chance to do so..
But one of the songs he wrote was titled
GORDONS' GONNA LIGHTFOOT & BE GONE
in this song he chose names of other famous country singers names,
Said their first names & mad their last names mean something -
For example
JOHNNY gots his PAYCHECK
& CHARLEYS very RICH
my bank accounts like
LESTER it's getting mighty FLAT
but like that other CHARLEY i still got my PRIDE
they say I'm more like RAY, i gotta pay the PRICE
like BUCK they say I'm OWEN,
i drew the dime to do the mowing -
of these wild oats I've been sewing so I'm doing like HANK SNOW I'm moving on
