"नास्तिको वेद निंदक:" is a quote from the Manusmriti. However the real meaning is denial of existence (न अस्ति) beyond the body. आस्तिक on the other hand are those who advocate eternal existence (of soul).
Nastik meant alternate path that did not emphasize the Vedas. It has been distorted by westerner academics to imply nonbeliever and from there even to mean atheism which is a complete timeline reversal. Atheism is an extreme cannibalistic form of monotheism that came out of the so-called European enlightenment. there was no atheism in ancient Bharata
