Slapstick cops have been around stince before "the talkies" ... they used to ride "a dozen in a car" shooting (and missing) the bank robbers and escaped prisoners. Peter Sellers played Clouseau as a quiet character while this inspecteur is rather loud.
I came aboard with watching Charlie Chan movies for maybe three years now. With everything being available on regular TH-cam (so far), watching them, along with the Mr. Wong (Boris Karloff) and Mr. Moto ([Peter Lorre), the trifecta has become a staple with my video viewing. I do love Charlie Chan's proverb's (Confucious?), my favorite of all time, is Sidney Toller in 'Dead Men Tell No Tales', when he tells the older lady; "man learn much, who learn how to die'. That can't be topped,....ever!

Being that this was filmed prior to Pearl Harbor / US military introduction into WWII, an interesting prescience re how the US was drawn into the war, and by which advisory countries. 50 - 60 million lives (lost) later, these are haunting words.

That said - the lead up to U.S. involvement beyond previous under-radar support of England and Russia. through aid in suppling munitions (including hand held weapons and bullets) /tanks/ technology (as it existed) / tactical training and support - held the very realistic goal of FDR (Democrat) in entering the war. Opposed by majority held GOP Congress, he fought to circumvent current law(s) in providing aid & comfort. Without FDR's commitment to such, even prior to Pearl Harbor the reality of England's defense against German bombings would have been a mute point. FDR was a man of courage, vision, and conviction based on the betterment of the ideal most Americans held at that a time. He lifted the country from Depression, created millions of jobs, and provided a path forward despite political opposition.

Uh-oh, what would happen to the huge crowd that brags fifty times a days as to how cuss-free these great old movies are? I read a comment by one guy bragging that these movies contain no murders. LOLOLOL. I don't care, I love them. I am glad they are cussing and sick violence free, though. That stuff gets beyond just tiresome, all the way to mentally draining, aka depressing.

On the contrary moviegoers complained that they DIDN'T WANT war venues! They wanted to FORGET the war if only for an hour. Most of these CC movies are only tangentially related to the war...
As in every Charlie Chan movie, and most other crime comedy thrillers of the time, there are TOO MANY CHARACTERS. And too many of them look too much alike! The two women in this? I only just realized there are TWO, not ONE, because one is skulking in the bushes while the other is on the phone. Then there is the butler's son Philippe who looks just like the handsome young thing one of the 2 women is trying to sneak to Panama so he won't be arrested by I-know-not-who. Could be France, could be enemies of liberty, who can say? NOT ME! The rest of the men running around all look alike. Even one guy who calls another guy "papa" looks just like him, even the same age. I am too slow upstairs to fully follow a B-movie crime thriller. So I'll just have to enjoy it anyway. SIGH.
