    This is great. I am grappling with IV right now and we actually had a question on a paper dealing with military participation on wages with draft# as the IV.
    One thing I am still trying to wrap my head around: As I understand it the 2SLS coefficient is ONLY the effect on "compliers" which in this case would be those who went to war when drafted and those who did not join the military if not drafted.
    But this seems to me to create a selection bias of its own, as the "never takers" are those who have the most resources to dodge the draft (in that time college attendance was sufficient AFAIK). Wouldnt this downward bias the coefficient of military participation on wages? Or am I misunderstanding? Or maybe this was the point the professor was trying to tease out, that if compliance with the instrument is correlated with the outcome (wages), then it is a bad IV.

    Hmm... however, it seems to me that people who display signs of mental illness are likely to have a high draft number, which would imply a correlation between Draft NO. and Depression. What do you think?

    • @윤상호학생경제학부
      @윤상호학생경제학부 11 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Maybe we could add W: depression as an exogeneous variable then maybe we could argue for exogeneity more easily

  • @enkii82
    @enkii82 5 ปีที่แล้ว

    Must the IV be with only time-multivariate data? can it be done with just cross-section?

  • @MN-lp8jj
    @MN-lp8jj 2 ปีที่แล้ว

    why is there no theoretical association between draft number and depression? I feel like a person with low draft number, even though unsure about whether going to the war in the future, still can be more depressed than others.

    When she says “we USE” beta 0, beta 1, and draft numbers to “come up with War hat” what does she mean? Are those variables and coefficients added, multiplied or is there some other formula to calculate? Love the video by the way

    • @bigfriki
      @bigfriki 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      You calculate them with Ordinary Least Squares, which the statistics software does automatically, but here you also have the manual formula for a simple linear regression:
      en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ordinary_least_squares#Simple_linear_regression_model
      On Wikipedia beta 0 is alpha and beta 1 is beta.
      Hope that helps.

    Can you just look at the correlation between the instrument and the dependent variable and if their correlation is 0 then we say it is a good instrument?

    • @jeroenvandepasch7875
      @jeroenvandepasch7875 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Notice that there is a correlation between the instrument and the dependent variable. Namely, via the independent variable (war participation). Having 0 correlation between the instrument and the dependent variable would therefore not help us to show this relationship and therefore would be considered not a good instrument. We hope to find an instrument such that "z influences x which influences y". This would mean that cov(y,z|x)=0 (that is, if we observe the value of x, knowing z tells us nothing incremental about y), but it does not mean that cov(y,z)=0 unconditional on x.

    thanks, but to all the other econ prof: such a useless thing, I hate all the useless econometrics the people try to force onto the phds, historical correlation doesn't suggest causation. also, this is a loopy logic that doesn't pass, after all, if war is not correlated with some sht, then the numbers would, if the war is not correlated with sht, then the numbers wouldn't, the so called instrument is just an additional veil of nonsense, not an actual instrument. the economists just use complex useless things to look at simple numbers while spending less than 1% of time to think about true common sense. also, the errors of the regression will never be normal and it will never reflect any true probability because it's not and could just all be coincidence and errors, these so called economists have no real world intuition or experience, just imagining in their ivory towers with overly complicated totally useless models and superficial things which doesn't pass common sense. no such thing as estabilishing causality or would use, howx etc. about it, cepthem, no depresx for suchx, anyx, think any but not such nonsense

    • @impieman10
      @impieman10 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hey, if you watched the video you'll notice that thinking about the true common sense is more than half of it. The numbers are there just to shed some logical light on our bias, most of the work here is actual reflection on real world intuition.
