Amélie, thank you so much for telling this story of Mary. A TRUE survivor. I've never heard the whole story but I heard part of the story from my Dad at aged 11 or 12 in an effort to try to keep his preteen girl safe and deter her from hitchhiking (yes, when it was all the rage). I was already 5'7" pretty and precocious at 12. I can only imagine how frightened my Dad was with a kid like me, lol. But this story scared the living day lights out of me. I've never understood the intellectual respect paid to this ugly film, which depicts a homicidal maniac as a hero. There are real heroes to be found.
