Whatever the medium, Zappa orchestrates humour with seriousness to denounce and enlighten his listeners. At once rigorous and humorous, it blends numerous disciplines without concern for convention, reflecting the composer's singularity.
And if it was necessary to deconstruct the teaching of a classically trained musician like George Duke or Ruth Underwood, Zappa did it... they were grateful.
Composers like Varèse and Boulez understood immediately that they were dealing with a very different beast, one that was part of their universe and one that could also touch all universes.
His music opened us up to all kinds of music, made us curious and explorers, so thank you Frank....

      That's pure poetry, petit wazoo.
Makes me feel like I'm in an exclusive club to be one of the lucky ones to know Frank's music.

When I interviewed The Ensemble Modern... I asked them..."What is the most difficult song to play of Zappa...G Spot Tornado?"...and the answer from ALLLL of the musicians was...NO!::::by FAR...the most difficult song was AMNERIKA."

I love this documentary. This portion was so good. Zappa dreamed of conducting orchestras playing his music to the point that he sold records to fund it because it’s so expensive. But he did that by himself, which is amazing. Yet he found it to be disappointing because humans can’t play perfect music. Thus his pioneering fore’ into the digital music world with the synclavier. From playing a bicycle on live tv for Steve Allen to that. He never ceases to amaze me.

You just have to like it, but one can educate one's taste by hearing it enough. And when you listen a lot, you're feeding your taste. You're absolutely right about the compirison with Neil Young's soloing style. Always loved his dirty and unique solos. (Southern Man is a great example)

I was talking with a classical musician once, and I said rock musicians are better at improvisation - and she agreed with that.

Great reaction. This is a combination of his earlier stuff and the later classical part of his life before he died with the Ensemble Modern,. I still think that there is real connection with them: Zappa's earlier works (Uncle Meat, We're Only In It For the Money, Lumpy Gravy, etc) and his later works with Ensemble Modern. Listen to a side of his earlier works and then an Ensemble Modern side. (The Yellow Shark) . thanks.
