    Ugin: “Jace, cast an illusion so I can sneak my brother off instead of letting him die.”
    Jace: “But why?”
    Ugin: “So WotC can bring him back after they’ve cycled through their other villains because they can’t be bothered to create new ones. Have fun with Phyrexia, by the way.”

    I do not think Ugins motive were of malice. It’s not easy to juggle massive threats like the Eldrazi and Nicol Bolas back to back. Given what he was up against, Ugin could not afford to fail.

  • @milesbrewis2375
    @milesbrewis2375 ปีที่แล้ว +20

    I feel like you fail to address the elephant in the room. As a colourless character, Ugin sees these actions as tasks. Things to be accomplished then moved on from. As long as someone is executing the plan, Ugin can consider it dealt with and move on to the next action as opposed to say a black aligned character who would allow others to do the hard work while they reap the benefits or a blue aligned character who would set the person they perceived as the best fit for the task, regardless of whether that would be themselves or somebody else. Colour identity informs the outlook of the character and colourless is very axiomatic and efficiency driven

  • @agm5424
    @agm5424 ปีที่แล้ว +4

    On another topic regarding Ugin I have a theory on he's original color combination before he became colorless. I think he was born with the Temur color combination centered in Blue. Here are my reasons for it:
    1. He always had a desire to explore and learn (B,R) everything about the multiverse while preserving and protecting it (G) like when he didn't want the gate watch to eliminate the eldrazi because they might hold and important role in the multiverse (G).
    2. Being Nicol Bolas twin brother and sharing an egg with him it would make sense that they shared more than one color, in their case Blue and Red.
    3. If I remember correctly he's powers revolved around creating living things from mana like the dragons of Tarkir from the dragon storm. The Temur color combo has always been the color capable of creating things from nothing and manifesting things like dreams, spirits and illusions into reality and giving life and sentience to natural forces like elementals.
    4. There's also the whole thing about Ugin being "the soul of Tarkir". Ugin, a pre mending plains walker AND an Elder Dragon would have the power to either create the plane or molded it in his image. If he is a wedge color dragon then that might explain why Tarkir is a wedge color centered plane. And remember, where was he in fate reforged fighting Bolas?, in or close to Temur territory.
    5. Put his card shown in the video next to the Temur/rBg apex predator of Ikoria, Illuna. They clearly look as if they might be related or in other words born out of the same mana combination. And what are her powers? O yes creating life, in her case beasts, out of nothing.
    6. One thing we must remember about the shard color elder dragons are that their main color that their personalities revolve around is the one at the center. Chromium is an Esper combo centered on Blue, Bolas is Grixis center on Black and so on. Some people forget this because in the Tarkir story lines the Kahn's had one of their allied colors as their center instead of the enemy color. This was because they were planning on creating the Dragon Supremacists timeline otherwise known as the Sarkhan is a F'ER TIMELINE from the very beginning. You know the one were the complex clans were erased from existence and substituded with a bunch of unbalanced dragon "broods" and more to the point where the enemy color of the factions are removed. But that case was unique to tarkir and was made clear in Ikoria that the center color for each wedge was the enemy color.
    In that case logic would dictate that the Wedge color Elder Dragons would also have their personalities center around the center color and in the wedges that would be the enemy color. Meaning that if Ugin a Temur themed dragon his personality would fall into Blue. So here are my main points for Blue:
    a) Ugin is more cerebral and contemplative than emotional. The only times were emotions got the better of him were under very dire circumstances. First upon realizing that Bolas, his twin, doesn't give a crap about him and in the Eldrazi incident. Most of the time his is all chilled and stoic.
    and
    b) Let us remember the goal of Blue, to improve and evolve via knowledge, to become more than one is by choice and application. Ugin would fit into this. He study mana and it's nature to the point that he literally evolved beyond, or better yet transcendent the color wheel itself. He also transcendent death itself practically giving it the finger using manipulation and time travel both of which are main characteristics of Blue.

    Honestly, i wonder how he felt about the march of machines. Just him and Nicol chilling in a mirrorpool while the entire multiverse gets fucked. Makes me see Ugin as a self-centered saviour, now that *his* problems are fixed, he's just gonna chill with his brother forever

      to be fair, bolas was a everyone's problem that ugin failed to stop before he got out of hand so could also be a situation of "this is my fuck up and i am responsible for this mess, so if anything this is my #1 priority over everything (being twin brothers and all)"

    • @andrewamann2821
      @andrewamann2821 ปีที่แล้ว

      Of all the bad writing, locking Bolas up after desparking him, instead of just killing him, was actually the right answer. Death was nothing more than an inconvenience to him, so doing the equivalent of just locking him in a box keeps him from being a threat to the multiverse, as a whole.

  • @yoav.kats6328
    @yoav.kats6328 ปีที่แล้ว +6

    I'm surprised you haven't mentioned the things he did on Tarkir, Bolas's villain introduction was that "He sired whole races, populated entire planes, and then hunted them to extinction for his amusement." And Ugin did basically that but without the extinction because he kept on creating living intelligent being only to make them fight the clans that he also created as confirmed by the m19 stories.

      I honestly think Kaya was one of the better new planesealkers. Her motives are so much grounded in being a gatekeeper of the multiverse as much as it's to find a answer to her plane's collapse. She just happens to not want anyone else to go through. Old magic stories had no heroes, everyone was morally gray and I was ok with that. The difference in why planeswalkers were dicks back then was because they were Gods. Ob Nexlius commented on it when he battled Jace,Gideon and Nissa. He was delighted that Gideon had back bone and challenged him to a real 1v1 on the plane of his choice, but go upset when Gideon denied his request pretty much calling them pussies before planeswalking

    How much of this was intentional for character depth and how much is it the writers being utterly incapable of writing since pre-2011?

  • @Android_Drew
    @Android_Drew ปีที่แล้ว +6

    I like the point about how most oldwalkers are pretty self centered and can be massive dicks (a certain kor comes to mind), but I think Ugin is a much stranger case than others. He seems to have no observable agenda other than keep the multiverse ticking along nicely (fitting since he's colorless and has none of the values ingrained in certain colors of mana), in a manner that's cold and impersonal. While he's done many callous things, he only actually selfish thing he's appeared to have done is keep his brother around after WOTS, presumably for sentimentality (very much not a colorless value). I wonder if they might expand his character in the future and it may result in him gaining one or more colors.

    I don’t know why but this video made me realise how similar Ugin and Urza are. They both got a deadly sibling rivalry with their Brothers who coincidentally share the same Colors, they both are morally ambiguous masterminds who are the best we got and if Ugin and Urza switch their stories their actions seem too similar, that little of their actions would be out of character.

    • @andrewamann2821
      @andrewamann2821 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      @@Otacon2099Being fair, Urza was dealing with a single threat to a single plane at a time, whereas Ugin had to juggle threats to multiple planes, or the multiverse at large. That said, in retrospect, I do find it odd that certain threats and characters didn't show up for certain events throughout the backstory.
      The Eldrazi arrived on Zendikar due to the massive concentration of mana on the plane, but when Bolas got up to his fuckery on Alara, functionally trying to eat the plane, there wasn't even a hint that they might have caught the attention of something much bigger, and much hungrier, than Nicky B. Ugin, also, was suspiciously absent in moving to intervene there, or in at least knowing what his brother was up to at the time.
      Urza was an aloof, mostly selfish prick with a lack of foresight for consequences (see: Xancha/Karn... The threat of the oil had been known at some point between the collection and installation of the Heartstone, and Karn creating the plane of Argentum...), but he responded to the threats, and kept appraised of them, in the ways he knew how: artifice and careful planning that would outlive himself.
      Ugin, on the other hand, was sloppy in ways that could have been prevented, like in setting up conditions to release the Titans from their stasis, or allowing the Immortal Sun to be activated anywhere that wasn't it's intended end plane. Between the two, Ugin left way too much to chance.

    Didnt ugin died at one point after locking the eldrazi and that's why he did not studie them. And I belive he wanted to trape the eldrazi im zendikar because eldrazi are attracked to mana and zendikar had a freaking lot of mana and the hedron had some weird power that affected the eldrazi, not because he didnt want to risk his plaine.

    • @The_Loreseeker
      @The_Loreseeker  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      It's true Zendikar had a lot of mana, but there are plenty of planes out there with loads of mana, and the hedrons could be made anywhere. It took them 40 years to construct the hedron network - plenty of time to find another suitable world.

    • @JamesDM4
      @JamesDM4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      @@The_Loreseeker I dont belive they could have find an other place, they needed the hedron to trape the eldrazi. And unless I'm mistaken, there arn't any hedron anywhwre else and like you said, it took 40 years to build theme. So it's either wait 40 years and let the eldrazi eat everything or use the place where there is not only a trape and a bait already there.

    Ugin is rumored to be the most intelligent sentience to ever exist… He’s a pragmatist who understands that he may occasionally need to be “a dick” to accomplish a particular task and does so without compunction because he sees the “big picture” that others are unable to. However, he is still a living creature with biases, love, hate, etc. and regardless of his IQ, mistakes are inevitable at some point throughout in his 50,000 years of existence. I’d like to think that something you or I would need years of study to master, Ugin would learn in the literal blink of an eye, two blinks for complete mastery maybe. Lastly, the Titans have a reputation for corrupting the minds of every living thing within their “sphere of influence”. It’s possible that Ugin was able to sense he could be vulnerable in some way and/or fought off the corruption while also planning, imbuing and installing the hedrons (with Nahiri’s help) and didn’t stick around because he had no obligation to assist in the first place, so when he was done, he was done.

    They had to eat zendikar to prevent all that mana from exploding its goop all over the face of the multiverse.
    That emrakul willingly locked herself in the moon on innistrad to prevent eating it is proof enough of that.

    Ugin isn't evil, but he isn't good either. Here we get to see true neutrality at its finest. How else can one explain Ugin's desire for a passive outcome. When dealing with the eldrazi. Not once but twice. The fact that his very wing beats on the Plane of Tarkir did the EXACT same thing as his father. Who just so happens to be Ur-Dragon. Nicol Bolas was chaotic neutral and their sister was lawful neutral.
    To us mortals their plans, schemes and puppeteering seemed abstract and just plain weird. But no wonder, when dealing with Elder beings. It's best to not become comfortable with your box.

    Yep Ugin is a dick and he's pretty usless also. His "help" against Bolas on Ravnica was minimal and he could not be bothered to help against phyrexians. Stil in the later he did less damage than Kaya nad Kaito who wasted their allies sacrifices on New Phyrexia when they decided not to use Sylex which led to countless deaths on countless planes the phyrexians attacked.
    Ugin's sanctimonity when he chastices Gatewatch over killing the Eldrazi Titans was rich. They tried to bind them as he asked them to, but when all else failed they did the right thing by killing them and saving the world (and many others). This asshole did nothing and had the gal to tell them they should let them destroy Zendikar and try again on another plane because there are infinite planes... That's how much he values life.
    Him saving Bolas instead of killing him was also ridiculous. I had the same thoughts as you about the whole thing...
    I'm sad we didn't have Nahiri and Ugin reunion like she had with Sorin. Ugin also deserves a bloody vendetta for his betrayal.
