Gerber Downrange Tomahawk Review - Actual Use and Abuse, tactical tomahawk

  • The Gerber Downrange Tomahawk. There have been a ton of videos about it, and pretty much none of them have actually even used the tool. Well here it is, I've been using and abusing the Gerber Downrange Tomahawk for awhile now, and it's been great. I've been beating it up so you can rest easy knowing that yours will be able to handle the abuse when it's needed.
    The Gerber Downrange Tomahawk is a great piece of kit to add to your bugout bag, get home bag, or keep in your truck for emergencies. It'll be able to handle pretty much anything you throw at it... and it'll look awesome doing it.

    This is one the most comprehensive product reviews, I've ever seen. Thanks a lot for making it.

    What you said is exactly what I had in mind. Keeping that attached to your get home bag. Just a good solid tool to help with whatever you may run into. It was good timing too to be able to test it out on all the different surfaces in you're bathroom. Its a glorified hatchet so of course it goes into wood but what about other elements you could run into trying to get out of harms way ya know? so way to put it to the test!

    I've used the pry bar end to dig a hole for a fire it. This thing is a beast. I did however bust the top bolt off some how while splitting wood. the G10 handle was jarred enough at the top. The handle is still in one piece, just needs a replacement bolt.

    Great to see this tool in use. I still dont quite see the money value given the materials in it, but I love the design and practicality. Great 4x4ing tool if you put an edge on it!

    So, here's a badass story. A year ago I moved to the city I now live in. I needed cash so, I put a pistol on consignment at my local pawn shop. While there, I saw a NEW Gerber Downrange Tomahawk for sale for $180. I've been in there a dozen times since then and every time, the tomahawk was sitting there. Waiting. Today I went in to look at lever action rifles and again, there the tomahawk sat. Long story short, $75+tax and I now own one. Not bad, considering it's $285 on Amazon. I'm absolutely psyched. Especially after watching your thorough review of it's toughness. This will be with me through the worst of the zombie apocalypse for sure. HaHa

    Thank for doing a durability review on this. I have been on the fence about this product. Gerber products are hit and miss sometimes. I was also worried about the handles but they do seem durable.

    • @LastLineOfDefense
      @LastLineOfDefense  8 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      The handles definitely held up to a lot more abuse than I thought they would. I figured after a few direct tree shots, those things would have popped right off - but they are holding strong with no signs of letting go.

    It would be great if you put in a "worth the money vs competitors" rating. Since you did have a plethora of axes, I would enjoy seeing alternatives and comparisons. Perhaps with your optics planet budget expanding you can compare two different opticsplanet products (i.e. two different red dot sights).

    i work in construction and we use axes to chop channels in brick walls for wiring and even to cut thiner rebar if there is a need and there is no grinder and for some reason my boss loves to buy 10$ made in PRC 100% disposable garbage and boy does it work well now if you ask me what is the best tool for this work on a budget i would say a Estwing Rigger"s axe if you need a small pry bar weld it to the top or the bottom cut the handle and weld the head to a pry bar and one bonus i see on a estwing is it has a rubber handle so if you decide or it happens that you hit a live wire up to ohhh lets say 400 v you should be fine but it is not rated meaning if you get zapped estwing is not responsible for it also cutting live wires will leave nasty dents in the edge (what i think that protects this tool the most is the price i dont think that there are a lot of folks that are abel to pay 200$ for a tool that they are gonna beat the living shit out off )

      The price is still highly absurd. It might be good. No doubt, but for below 100 USD you can get a Gränsfors axe which is an amazing brand. Besides. That steel for that price range is another thing you should note. While good it sure isn't any of the more expensive steels.

    • @blake102989

      420 is junk, 1095 or similar are what's good for axes, and for the price of this bull shit it should fully be 1095 or atleast 1055.

      Reason that it doesn't come sharp is that it's technically a 'breaching tool' - and the dull edge I guess must go hand-in-hand with that. Not sure why, maybe for some department use, etc. Totally agree though, I feel like it should come with a sharpened edge.
