      Post season depression is real. I still have a couple months until the seasons over and I’m already feeling it lol that’s why I want to set up an indoor garden now so when winter hits the indoor garden will be ready.

    This is such a wonderful video for those of us that live where it is cold. I love fresh herbs to use all year long and would love to grow greens also. I have thought about doing a set up like this but haven't done it because it seemed confusing to set up. I am a visual learner so seeing this system is the best way for me to understand how to do it. Thank you for your informative videos.

    Most people set up grow rooms to extend the growing season in cold climates. However, I live in a climate where summer is generally fatal to outdoor gardens. I live in a tiny, tiny condo with five closets. I’ve converted the walk-in closet into a grow room. I put small tabletop hydroponic systems on the same shelves with my house plants. I use these for leafy greens and herbs. I use larger tabletop systems to start seedlings and grow micro dwarf varieties in the walk in closet. I have eight DWC buckets in the closet for peppers, cucumbers, etc. Since I only grow hydroponically indoors, pests are not usually a problem. However, because the house plants may introduce some pests (mostly fungus gnats) I do plant herbs that tend to repel pests and use small, plug in UV traps that control any flying pests. I do sprouts in the kitchen and I do plan on bringing my micro greens set up out of storage (I love cantaloupe micro greens!)
    I’m able to share any excess with my adult kids who have absolutely no interest in growing food.

    Dwarf/Micro tomatoes did well in my small setup (very similar to this). They produced continually for almost 4 months then began dying off (different times and production according to breed).

    • @Murlockingqc
      @Murlockingqc 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@flowerpixel Nothing to be afraid, they are super easy to grow and germinate. I would recommend getting a small grow tent and a decent light setup with a fan on the ground and later an exhaust fan. You will grow tomatoes, cucumbers, beans, lettuces.. etc.. indoor like a pro.
      About 250$ of investment to have an indoor garden, I say that's a must. LED panels are very cheap and they don't consume a lot of power. Mine is using about 145W and I have it turned down to about 60-70% for growing peppers. The biggest investment will be getting a decent ventilation system that's automatized to save money, I went with AC Infinity. Doesn't make any noise (or barely), cost almost nothing in electricity and barely create heat.. the tent is waterproofed and there's an extra mat at the bottom to contain any large spills. Don't do hydroponics.. you will ruin your house.
      My AC Infinity is set to turn ON when the humidity reach a level. This create the perfect environment and bring fresh air on intervals.

    I definitely have the room for an indoor garden. I’m doing some kale, arugula, and lettuce starts that I want to try in a mini greenhouse outside or using milk jugs and bottles. The problem is while the Pacific North West has very mild winters and the snow might stick only a couple times and usually it hovers close to freezing and not below, it really is cloudy almost the entire time. So, the plants may not do so well.

    I’m trying to extend my cherry tomato and pepper plant into the winter season with a single grow light; so far so good. I watched a video that showed using Mylar around the plant significantly increased the light intensity, so my little set up uses cheap fold-up reflective windshield shades. As I live on the Alabama coast I also roll the two pots out in the sun whenever able, and use the grow light to supplement for cloudy and short days. 🤞🏼

    • @pierreshasta1480
      @pierreshasta1480 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      The mylar by reflecting the light will increase the light absorbed by the plant, but it will also increase the heat, so you must be careful that your tomato plants do not get too hot.

    The idea of a pond liner lining a box is a great idea, might try that with some old dresser drawers I was going to cut up for another use. I am successfully growing:
    Dwarf Micro tomatoes in Aerogarden Harvest and they are 1 year old and still producing fruit continuously and abundantly (2 plants in the Aerogarden, water daily, feed every other week).
    Basil grew in it 700+ days until I decided to try growing something new.
    I have seen many people growing cucumbers, peppers, tomatoes, lettuces, and other things like radish, herbs, artichokes, flowers, succulents in their Aerogardens successfully. I don't know why your cucumbers didn't grow well under those lights, maybe pollination issue? Thanks for another great video :)

    • @latriciacagle4873
      @latriciacagle4873 11 หลายเดือนก่อน

      I use Aerogarden type systems indoors. Some are interspersed with my house plants and others are in a walk-in closet that was converted to a grow room. I use a 12 pod system to start the seedlings. I move them to a DWC system when they start to outgrow the AG system. I use mostly dwarf varieties. I agree the cucumber issue may be a pollination issue. AG has cucumber seed pods that are a parthenocarpic variety. I’ve found this increases production since pollination in an indoor system can be difficult/time consuming. I find small fans used for computers help with ventilation/pollination as well.

    I have a basement room dedicated to starts and over-wintered peppers. Having a flood tray with an automatic watering system (just flip a switch) has been a great convenience. I've always used T8 fluorescents bc they are cheap, but have now got into using Feit "garage lights" they're LED, and very cheap. Each 40W bulb goes into a reg fixture and is $20 at Home Depot. I look for 5500 W bulbs with a high CRI rating and as many lumens as possible generally. Have some HID lights that I'm looking for a way to use for growing food in the winter. Thinking about venting the heat out to keep a greenhouse going or something. Ordered about a quarter of the seeds I needed for next year from your site yesterday Luke. Excited to get the rest when I have some more extra cash.

      The parthenocarpic cucumber varieties are my choice for indoor growing. I’m a lazy gardener and don’t have the patience to manually pollinate the blossoms. I use small oscillating fans to help with ventilation/pollination. I may occasionally use an electric toothbrush with the tomato and pepper plants if I’m seeing less than desired pollination.

    i would def not use the lights he is using today, much better led systems that are really affordable. i use spiderfarmer for seed early seed starting in late dec and jan for spring and is great but lots of options nowadays that dont require replacing bulbs.

      If you are growing lettuce, use any 6500k LED lamp and it will work perfectly. No need to buy expensive brand name lamps.

    Thank you for all your videos!
    Are you sure the cost of operation of this rig is 10-15 cents per day?
    If 16 bulbs consuming 20W are on for 12 hours per day, total daily consumption is 3.84kWh.
    The utility rate would have to be less than $0.04/kWh to operate so cheaply. The lowest utility rate most North Americans will see is about $0.10/kWh which will be 38 cents per day for these lights.

      Put a jar of apple cider vinegar with a drop of dish soap in there. They fly in and can’t fly out. For anything I bring inside, I put them in a garbage bag with a no-pest strip for a couple days.

    You need some air circulation on those indoor plants. Cannabis growers are the real indoor growers, they make sure every part of the growing cycle is taken care of, even wind.

      @@MIgardener I guess I'm talking more about the water management and keeping the space warm. My basement is unfinished so everything I started even with the grow light I bought was really stunted and did worse than seeds sown directly in the ground. I'd love to grow cucumbers but like you said that requires more than this setup.

    Are they nutrient deficient though 🤔, and are hydroponic grown plants deficient in nutrients. Also color of the leaves 🍃 doesn't mean healthy or not. Nutrient deficient plants will have dark leaves when given chemical fertilizers.
