    I wonder if Patricia Lanza is a relative of Mario Lanza? I hope someone sees this and has the answer! I just did a quick search - no relation.

    What if I don’t have grass clippings?

  • @svetlanikolova7673
    @svetlanikolova7673 3 ปีที่แล้ว

    Morag Gamble puts the newspaper between the mulch an compost layers so that weeds dont come up. Your firt layer on the ground should be compost then the other layers and the last 3 layers are compost, newspaper mulch. For better results, do this in the fall.

    I can’t use grass clippings due to the 15 species of invasive, noxious weeds we’ve always got in our lawns in my area of central CA. Also invasive grasses! There’s plenty seeds that can remain dormant for YEARS until they’re given the perfect environment like this. It’s been a battle in my new beds! Some even grow by moonlight! They even survive hot composting! So is there a replacement for the grass or is it fine to just leave it out?

    • @rosea830
      @rosea830 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Yes, you can leave out the grass clipping. You can substitute compost or another organic nitrogen source.

      You can also use used coffee grounds as for greens.

    What would be a replacement for green grass clippings?

    • @rosea830
      @rosea830 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      You don't need grass clippings, they're an example of a ready source of nitrogen. You can substitute compost or alfalfa from the feed store.

      Urine and coffee grounds are a good substitute for grass clippings

    I live in zone 3. Can I spread the seeds in the fall and leave them in the winter . Would they sprout in the spring?

  • @danielrice5474

    Very nice video. The only thing that concerns me is the garden washing away since all the dirt is on top of the ground. Here we have a LOT of rain anymore. (North Eastern USA). Wouldn't you need something on the edges to stop this?

    • @ramz1455
      @ramz1455 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      You can use this same method and just make a raise bed instead.

    • @svetlanikolova7673
      @svetlanikolova7673 3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Daniel,put rotting wood logs that will hold the water and make sure you have atleast 6 inches of organic compost down.You can also have your garden beds surrounded by arborist wood chips that will absorb the water
      Get a hold of chipdrop.com for your wood chips.Besides , mix the soil on top with compost . It holds water, and cover the soul with mulch to absorb even more water in the beds. Try it and let me know how it goes?

    I don't have a problem with your method, just your descriptive words... Cheap?! Easy?! Fast?! Seriously?!
    I could till a spot much bigger than that in 45 minutes.
    And you didn't count all the time and transportation costs of getting all that stuff for layering. What do you consider expensive??! How much did this "cheap" tiny 6x6 square cost you? Could you possibly grow enough food in it to break even with the grocery store?
    Didn't your backs hurt for the next two days? At least I can mostly stand up when tilling.

    • @danielrice5474
      @danielrice5474 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      I also don't feel it would be cheaper or less work. But might get better results. People who till, usually till the same dirt year after year. Nutrition runs out over time and reduces garden effectiveness. If the layers don't wash away, I do feel the plants would love them.

      The added huge advantage is that you increase microbial life. Check out Gabe Brown’s video. It is fascinating. Also, there is a No-till podcast channel with farmer Jesse that is great. No till methods produce way fewer weeds because you don’t bring latent seeds to the surface. Good luck!!

    • @svetlanikolova7673
      @svetlanikolova7673 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@danielrice5474 It is cheaper if you are smart. Neighbors have grass clippings and leaves all the time in bags by the curb. You can create those layers with free stuff available to you as they come. And you can keep it local without driving anywhere! USE YOUR BRAIN

  • @mattjohnson550

    I dont think this would work as the nitrogen would be tied up in the process of everything trying to compost. Also the leaves and grass would get hot. I believe you would want to put at least 6 inches of topsoil or equal mixture on top of the lasagna layers and let the leaves, grass ect. to brake down. Would like to see what the plants look like in a month or so. I bet they will be yellow and stunted and if not I'd be surprised. Not knocking your method but just dont think it will produce a healthy bountiful garden
