  • Ryan Orwig talks about why using RETRIEVAL PRACTICE as a central aspect of studying in med school and for boards.
He starts off explaining the difference between REVIEW (which is often our default setting for re-studying material, which is passive and low yield) and RETRIEVAL PRACTICE (which is less intuitive, more difficult, but higher yield).
Then he outlines and models three ways to set up and deploy RETRIEVAL PRACTICE with samples of medical school and board-prep materials.
This video provides some instructional and philosophical framework for using RETRIEVAL PRACTICE instead of overly relying on REVIEW, especially within the context of studying medicine and board-based material.
We teach this skill in much greater depth and context in our STATMed Study Skills Class.

Just wanted to share this with anyone who’s been doing the retrieval method wrong like I have.
I probably make really great retrieval cards with hidden section for me to fill in, incomplete diagrams and not too information dense… problem is, I get so obsessed with making flash cards for all my lectures that I barely actually self check before the end of block. In my mind, the priority is making the cards but they become pointless if you’re NOT using them to self checking repeatedly and frequently. Don’t fall into this work volume trap!
The idea to record and replay the retrieval information is genius. I’m learning so much from the video + blog. Thank you Ryan and the Statmed Team

It’s just been 2 years out of med school and seriously can’t remember most of the stuff I learned.
Thanks for this video and love the example
Will use this in my studying now.

2:28 Recognition feels good. Creates an illusion of having learned. The effort of recall is much more useful, even if it does not feel good. Great video!

I am a professor in a health professions program and am very familiar with Ryan's work as he has worked with many of my students. What I really appreciate about the STATMed study program is that all of the techniques they teach are either based on scientific evidence or best practices in teaching and learning. He does a great job of operationalizing concepts from cognitive and education psychology like the testing effect, spacing, elaboration, interleaving, learning techniques use evidence based learning strategies like retrieval practice to enhance student learning. I highly recommend his courses.

I somehow started doing this on my own through so much trial and error in medschool! Its great that youve made this available! Wish someone taught me this earlier!
