Sorry, late to the party here! I just noticed that this video is two years old but it just popped up on my feed. Your Dad of course knows you well so his opinion matters most but as a newbie, you seem pretty chill to me 😂 In fact, the reason I watch your videos and love them so much is because you aren’t stiff and corporate. Your videos are super fun, interesting and informative. I love that you keep it real and talk about food that the locals eat. Keep on keeping on; you’re awesome!
I'm interviewing for a job in Hawaii and stumbled across your channel to get a lay of the land out there. Thanks so much for all the honesty in presenting the communities as they are and not as they look on Instagram and whatnot. Coming from living in Japan a total of 5 years (2 stationed in Yokosuka when I was in the Navy and 3 studying abroad in Tokyo), I welcome having a train system in Hawaii and better local public transport on the mainland in general. This video reminded me of riding around Pearl City with my parents to get carpet and a dining room table after moving there. It seemed like people had to take out their carpet when they moved and then new residents had to replace it if they wanted it. I hope to still have a brochure with modern kitchen furnishings in it. From my perspective, living on a military installation was the best and safest way for a kid. Every household had a job, a family, and something in common. Daiei had a big store at Pearlridge Mall in my time. That Macy's was Liberty House. The swap meet at Kam Drive-In theater operated at the same time. The swap meet was during the day on the weekends and the movies would show at night.
I stumbled onto your channel on accident. Searched through a few videos. Pearl City caught my eye since my wife is from that town (we live in Cleveland now). It was so cool that you featured Miki's and Pacific Palisades cause that's where she was raised and her parents still reside. Miki's is straight up nostalgia. You get a follow and a thumbs up for this video alone. Keep up the good work.
Beautiful aerial shot of upper Palisades. I had never seen that angle before, wow. We were one of the many first families in Palisades and moved in our new home in the middle part in 1966. Homes weren't even there in the 50's it was all brand new when we moved in. As we waited for them to finish our house in early 1966 we stayed at a condo in Waimalu across the shopping center from the old Zippy's side. When our dad drove us around that area as we passed Holsum bakery we could smell the fresh bread in the air. Pearlridge wasn't even built yet that came later. They finished phase 2 in 1975.
Interesting that where you're pointing to Momilani Elementary that used to be Waimano Home Mental Hospital until 1999. Way back then when a friend would act silly or crazy someone else would tease "Eh you belong in Waimano Home!" Sounds funny that people are trying to qualify to get in there now! There were rumors that it was haunted years after it closed and was abandoned. The actual elementary school back then was the smaller building behind where you're pointing to. There also used to be a pig farm above that area, it may no longer be there.
Wow! So proud of Dane and what he has done to his home. We were the previous owners, a blessing to know it went to another Hawaiian! Figgah da odds! Mahalo and Aloha to "Moving to Hawaii"

Born in 1974 in Trenton, NJ. Very familiar with Circuit City. I was raised in Akron, OH and got introduced to Ross in 2020 while visiting my girlfriend in Aliquippa, PA.
When I was prior service going back into the military, one of my recruiters at the Pearl City station lived at Pacific Palisades. Same here, first time I ever heard of that place.
10:10 BRAH! From the Drone shot, the graphic pointing at the facility that says Momilani Elementary School is actually Waimano Home. LOL. Then at 10:20, that's ALSO Waimano Home, not Momilani Elementary. lol. I was confused at first. I was like "What's that, wait a minute..." I didn't catch it the first time I watched the video, but I caught it the second time. It was good to see the old neighborhood. Mahalo nui for making the video. When you passed by the old SEARS distribution center along Kam Highway at 16:37 I almost cried. My mom used to work at SEARS back in the day. Lots of memories. Like you, I worked at the Pearl City Home Depot too. Boy, what a dumpster fire that place was. I had such a bad experience working there that to this day I will go out of my way to buy something at Lowe's. lol. From your various videos about the Pearl City and Aiea, to me they are pretty much the same place. I never, ever considered Pearlridge as Aiea. Anything with "Pearl" in it, is Pearl City. lol. So even Pearl Kai shopping center is still Pearl City. It's only AFTER Pearl Kai Shopping Center ends, and Dixie Grill begins... That's the gray zone of "Is this Pearl City or is this Aiea"? Then everything after and including Dixie Grill is definitely Aiea. lol. That's what I consider Pearl City as, even though it is not "correct". I know technically everything east of Ka'ahumanu Street is Aiea. But it never felt that way. I mean, if you go to google maps and click on "City Mill Pearl City", it has an Aiea address. Just goes to show that everything feels the same and that there is no real difference.
We are PCSing to Oahu in about 10 months. Not sure if we will be buying, but if we do, we'll definitely be contacting you guys!! Love the videos, so informative and easy to watch :)
I just subscribe to your channel today my niece and her daughter lives in Pearl City. She is in the Air Force 18 years now. She was home here in Philadelphia for Christmas. Pearlridge Shopping Center: Phase 1 (Uptown: the T&C store), Phase 2 (Downtown), and Phase 3 (4 plex movie theaters, military recruitment spots, El Bandito's, Denny's restaurant (Blue Tropix); old Toys "R" Us area - Down to Earth foods, now). Old School Monorail: When I was going to it from Phase 2, there was a live operator in a booth; it only costed me 10 cents; now, the 1 way fare is $1.00. Now, there is No Operator: what a scary thought; McDonald's was on the second level: there was a computer center, next to an escalator. Cinnabon's could be still there. Uptown had Tilt next to a Food Court; Downtown had Fun Factory next to an ATM machine. There is a new Tilt there: the one with the H.I.C. store. If you said H.I.C. to my late father, he would be thinking of the place across from a Flamingo's Chuckwagon in town: the (Neal) Blaisdell Center, by McKinley High School; close to McKinley Car Wash - the Hawaii International Center and not one popular surf store (like Sera's Surf Shop in Hale'iwa town / the North Shore side). I remember Circuit City, Kam Drive Inn (not as the movie area, but for the flea market/swap meet); Anna Miller's is still there next to Bravo. There is no longer a Sizzler's restaurant and the popular Monterey Bay Canners, by the picturesque Sumida Watercress farm by Kam Highway (with the small grass hut and palm trees).. There was a Tower Records/Video and Carnival Carnival video game place, within Pearl Kai Shopping Center; Gold's Gym became Powerhouse Gym ?!?
Oooohh!! You’re stepping into treacherous waters, Kristina. 😅 People stick to their claims about where the “best” poke spot is. Truth is, there are multiple places that offer suuuuuper ono poke.
@@movingtohawaii i have lived here little over a week and ate poke every day. One thing I do know, Don Quijote poke not good. Sorry cuz I love that store.

are there any areas of oahu that are residential neighborhoods constructed above a closed former landfill? Was the area near Waimano Stream (just above and north of the industrial at Waihona Street) a former landfill or is that all natural untainted land?
We lived in Pacific Palisades and my son went to Palisades elementary. Both my kids went to Highlands Intermediate. We still own that house in Palisades and it's rented out. It backed right up to the forest on a dead end street with great neighbors. We may retire in that house. Loved palisades except for a few things: The occasional meth head robbing people...but it sems EVERY working class neighborhood on Oahu has one of those now. The traffic: leaving the peace of the neighborhood to venture down the hill to lower PC was just a monumental nightmare, traffic wise. But again, where on Oahu's populated side is that NOT an issue now. Really loved having our own mini "shopping center" with gas station, good plate lunch place, and even a haircutting place(at one point).
You are way too cool. Great video. If i ever buy, I will definitely use you as my realtor. I will be retiring in a few years and relocating from Oahu to Kaua’i to be near family. Can you be my realtor even for Kaua’i properties?
Honored to hear you say that, Kristina! I’ll be more than happy to assist you in your home buying process, whether here on Oahu or on Kauai. I know you said you’re planning to move here a few years down the road but it’s never too early to ask questions and prepare. You got my number and know where to reach me, Kristina 🤙🏽

"Back in the day", Pearl City had one of the highest concentrations (by percentage) of locals (i.e., excluding Japanese tourists) of Japanese descent on Oahu... This fact can be seen in US Census data. 'Would appreciate your perspective, ... i.e., does today's Pearl City retain much of its Japanese-immigrant "feel" or "flavor"?
There’s a wide range of ocean front property available on all sides of the island. Give me a call/text to zero in on a match for your needs and timeline 📲 (808) 202-9194
Aloha Jonny, we are making our way there. Just finished Kaka’ako, Waianae & Ko’olina. North Shore is next in the line up. Mahalo for sticking with us! BTW, is it Waialua? Haleiwa? Pupukea? Laie? Where on the north shore are you interested in?
I'm a retired military officer, been here well over thirty years. Love it here, perfect location because it's centrally located. That rail? I feel sorry for those who have houses and now all they see is the concrete pylons of the rail. Eventually the place will look like Southside Chicago with graffiti everywhere looking like inner city. We can't even fill up the buses so why do we need a rail, it is an eyesore
Hey Travis, mahalo for your feedback. The rail is a hot topic right now (and ever since it’s inception, to be honest) and only time will tell if it’s huge budget was worth it. Thank you for your service!
I used to live there as a child in the early 80’s and I like the way it used to look back then. I’m not a big fan of the rail system. It’s taking away from Hawaii’s beauty. It’s ugly man. 👎

I want to see you do a video on best poke places on Leeward side!
My 2 kids went to momilani elementary mrs high was principal then
PCSing in Oahu in a few months, what's the average home value right now since we're planning to purchase a house. Advice is truly appreciated. Thank you and more power.
Aloha Sandra. Can you reach out or register on our site? With a comment like this you’ll have all the agents who watch us, searching for you to try to sell you
Haha
are there any areas of oahu that are residential neighborhoods constructed above a closed former landfill? Was the area near Waimano Stream (just above and north of the industrial at Waihona Street) a former landfill or is that all natural untainted land?
2 story Zippys that sells sushi? I must try!!!
We lived in Pacific Palisades and my son went to Palisades elementary. Both my kids went to Highlands Intermediate. We still own that house in Palisades and it's rented out. It backed right up to the forest on a dead end street with great neighbors. We may retire in that house. Loved palisades except for a few things:
The occasional meth head robbing people...but it sems EVERY working class neighborhood on Oahu has one of those now.
The rail would be good if they wrap it around the island, but no way the east side will allow
@@movingtohawaii you are awesome and look forward to lots more videos. How bout newcomer problems. Like i just moved out of lodging into housing and find furniture on facebook and cant find delivery people! No one want to make money? Oh yeah they be surfing haha!
Saw your pest video! So interesting! Mind sharing how you solved your roach problem? I'm moving to Honolulu at the end of the month and I want to be prepared since I'm having to rent a unit I haven't seen in person LOL
Hi Victoria. The bottom line is due diligence - keep your kitchen surfaces dry and clean, take out the trash DAILY, and when needed enlist the help of a professional (like Ian!)
Hawaii Kai zippys is da best, view of the marina
I've been into that very circut city. ;-)
Have you done one for Aiea
Not yet, it’s coming soon!
I use to work at City Mill is is still there?
"Back in the day", Pearl City had one of the highest concentrations (by percentage) of locals (i.e., excluding Japanese tourists) of Japanese descent on Oahu... This fact can be seen in US Census data. 'Would appreciate your perspective, ... i.e., does today's Pearl City retain much of its Japanese-immigrant "feel" or "flavor"?
I’ll take that Circuit City and ask if anyone also remembers RadioShack!! #Nostalgia
RadioShack is another classic!
Hmm... wonder if I could get a partner or three to revamp it with me as RadioShaka 🤙🏽
Did you say you found a ocean front property for 1.5M, what area? I was looking for an ocean front and the best I could find was 2.7M and up.
There’s a wide range of ocean front property available on all sides of the island. Give me a call/text to zero in on a match for your needs and timeline 📲 (808) 202-9194
I loved Daei.
Did you end up doing one for aiea?

Can you please do some of these videos on north shore?
Mahalo
Aloha Jonny, we are making our way there. Just finished Kaka’ako, Waianae & Ko’olina. North Shore is next in the line up. Mahalo for sticking with us! BTW, is it Waialua? Haleiwa? Pupukea? Laie? Where on the north shore are you interested in?
@@movingtohawaii Haleiwa, Waialua, Pupukea and maybe Kahuku.
I will be moving there this summer!
Mahalo!
Dad is wrong. Not tense. Local boy with respect for all. Thanks.
I worked at circuit city.
You have not done waimanolo yet.
Yea there’s really only one little
Pocket that we’d do there. Maybe one day but I also feel
Ok not touching it
Where is the Navy Housing?
I don't remember that I left the Island in 2002.
Yes I remember circut city lol
Back in the day. Like the drive in theaters up the street!
Still get B 52's?
kabuki's cone sushi the best? what a joke!
It’s ok for you to be wrong.
@@movingtohawaii you always have to be right, and that's OK too. You're entitled to your opinion. 🤣🤣🤣
Hello looking for a rental home in pearl city. I'm moving from Virginia Beach
Jackie's Diner!!! 20:42
nah, not too tense at all.
Guess my dad's criticism is constructive 😬
Some Very Important Locals & Mainlanders need heaps of cash.
Yeah home deps
No, They should have left it alone. The rail system I mean.
Where is the low-income housing? $1000 or less. Mahalo for your time.🤙
Hilo please
The was waimalu home. Not momilani elementary
Waimano
Mahalo for the clarification
I used to live there as a child in the early 80’s and I like the way it used to look back then. I’m not a big fan of the rail system. It’s taking away from Hawaii’s beauty. It’s ugly man. 👎
**** pc lol
