I've been 'playing' the ukulele for about a year now (I'm a flautist, and this has been my first foray into the scart world of stringed instruments...!) and have been struggling to find fingerings I can manage for some chords.
I've beem trying to avoid looking them up as well, but had never thought to move up the neck!
Thank you for explaining this so clearly. I'm looking forward to spending some time on this as it will make it so much easier to find unexpected chords!

Suzanne this is so very well explained. So many other tutorials waste so much time in their attempts to illustrate, whereas you get straight to the point. Whilst the Ukulele is so easy to play three basic chords so many of us have a fog in exploring its full potential. This Lockdown is an excellent opportunity for all enthusiasts to practice, practice.

Just learning to play the ukulele. What is the advantage of playing up the neck.

Hi Linda, I hope you're enjoying getting into it all! It's not essential to play up the neck, but it's satisfying to have all the sounds the uke has to offer at your disposal - so maybe a chorus of a song, or one singular chord moment might suit the sparkle of the higher chord voicings. Secondly, by mastering a variety of major and minor chords as moveable shapes, it really reduces the dread of playing in an "awkward" key. Keys like Ab / Db / F# are no more physically inconvenient than G or D if you are comfortable with moveable shapes. I hope this helps! :-)
