Hi Helly, Ideally the white bits in your plant wont be thermocol but it will be a material call Perlite. Even if it is thermocol or perlite, let it be there. This is added to the plant soil to increase the airation for the roots.

The thermocols are just ornamentals, for enhancing the looks of the plant. In fact they might affect the growth of plant, as they are made of polymer and are non degradable. My suggestion is to remove them if you can, otherwise it's okay. @Helly
