The problem is the word freestyle is used for both off the top and a random written verse. It wouldn't be a big deal if some people didn't think that clearly written verses were freestyled just because they are called a freestyle. Like I don't know how anyone with common sense could think this is off the top.

I just realized that when the beat came on and he said "I don't know how imma do this". He realized the verse he was set to spit wouldn't jive with the beat they gave him so he switched the flow up on that verse completely compared to the song he had this verse on with Shaheem. That's how talented this dude was

Funny how people don't want to admit that Big L played a vast role in Jay-Z's development. Supporting arguments usually include: ''Jay-Z was already a millionaire before Big L'' although this may be true, this has nothing to do with lyrical skill. Take some time and actually think about it, there hasn't been another artist since Big L that Jay-z was frantically trying to sign. Reason being is that, he knew Big L had a ton of potential but he also knew that he would've been able to compete with Jay on a grand scale. However, what I will say is that Big L did need more development as an artist and of course, that would've came in time had he lived. L was a threat, very rarely does another emcee who is coming up (i.e. like Jay-z was) make it a top priority to sign another rapper. Whenever something like that occurs in history it is usually because that rapper could become a threat in the future.
