Ashish Bagade, yes, you are right.
Though I admire Steve Waugh, his observations may always not be right.
Steven Waugh said Virender Sehwag will never last long in international cricket.
But, the entire cricketing world set fielding pattern almost the same for all batsman except Virender Sehwag.
      He terrorised all international bowlers.

I concur with Mr Waugh. Having played county cricket with Devon Malcolm for many years in the 90s, Dev was serious quick and unpredictable at times. As a batsman (and part time wicketkeeper) I faced Dev in the nets and kept wicket to him in many FC matches. He bowled with serious heat sometimes, and some other times it did not quite click for him. However, he was a good team man and a gentleman!

Interestingly Ian Chappell used to say the same thing about John Snow. The Aussies never understood why John Snow was not a regular in the England team. Leading wicket taker in the West Indies in 1968 and the Ashes winning tour of Australia in 70/71. Think of that, an English fast bowler who was the highest wicket taker on two overseas tours against two great cricketing nations. Between 1968 to 1972, John Snow was the finest fast bowler in the world. Dennis Lillee and Andy Roberts came after in 1972/3. Mike Procter could only impress and show his greatness at Gloucestershire. So yeah for 3 to 4 years John Snow was a truly great fast bowler, an Englishman, who was not trusted by the cricketing establishment in this country.
Have a look at John Snow on TH-cam bowling at Sydney for England v Australia in 1971. Snow took 7 wickets in the innings. Brilliant.

A great bowler, and his languid style was an absolute joy to watch; my three favourite bowlers would be John Snow, Dennis Lillee and Michael Holding - all different, but all great bowlers. Unfortunately for Snow, he was a bit of a maverick, and England selectors are so insecure and short-sighted they won't put up with anything outside the norm - they just want malleable 'establishment men', and then you can join their club and have a job for life.....

Illingworth was a terrible man manager and Malcom was often captained injudiciously. He was an 18 over a day maximum bowler too often used to bowl long spells and go over 20 overs in a day reducing his pace and turning him into a slower bowler. Perhaps his ideal was a 5 over spell per session that was increased to 6 or 7 if (and only if) he was on a roll. He should have been a "give it everything for 5 overs" sort of bowler. Not "Can you give me another 8 over spell". Malcom, Patterson and Younis were the proper quicks of that time. Pat Patterson was just fecking terrifying. Wonderful to watch. Wish we had those riches now. We get a Tait these days and they break down after half a test series and are told to bowl on batsman friendly tracks. The game is a much lesser spectacle because administrators have neutered fast bowling with feather bed pitches.

It comes down the administration, the coaching team that mismanage talent. Devon Malcolm was raw talent and I will have to pin it on his handlers. Conservative cricket brains always pick consistent bowlers over chaotic ones. But the consistent bowlers don't give you the X-factor. It wasn't like Devon was benched cas there was another 90+ mph consistent bowler... so huge failure from the administration.

From an Australian perspective, I was surprised he wasn't deployed more by England. But then touring Australia does strange things to cricket selectors, like leaving Stuart Broad and James Anderson out of several of their most recent Tests in Australia on the last tour.

During the 90s England generally didnt make enough runs to accomodate Devon all the time. He needed to be the pure strike bowler, always attacking. Imagine him in the 2005 ashes side...we might have even done better than the 0-5 in the series after!...fair play to Steve Waugh for giving him credit though, I liked Devon as a bowler

    • @MattSwain1
      @MattSwain1 ปีที่แล้ว

It’s true that England’s batting line-ups were pretty poor in that era and yet the bowlers who picked couldn’t bowl Australia out so even if England had picked 15 batsmen (yeah I know it’s 11-a-side 😂) they’d have still struggled to reach the Aussie totals. So often an England scorecard would have 1 or 2 respectable scores and everyone else out in single digits. I think they should have picked Malcom and they might have at least won occasionally!

Blame the media and/or the fussy British public. We have a match-winner now in Chris Broad, but as soon as he goes a game or two with no wickets, out come the hounds, baying for his blood. But they've been doing it all my life (they do it with the batsmen too), and with my pensioner's days looming, I think I can say quite safely that it's not going to change now.
As a contender for the England side, it's clearly better to be 6 out of 10 in every game than have one or two games per series at 9 or even 10 and the rest at just 1 or 2. It's the British way, so there!

What an interesting clip. I remember Allan Border saying that England didn’t pick the right players. After some years passed, I was in a position to ask Border who he might have been referring to. I was referred to his agent who dismissed my inquiry as trivial. I had assumed Border was referring Jon Crowley and Neil Fairbrother, both good players of spin. But maybe Border meant Devon Malcolm

  • @sosayweall7290

Devon Malcolm was better than his averages suggest. He featured in many of England's Test victories in the 1990's (and there weren't that many), and often his efforts didn't result in a big return in the the wickets column. But when he got into the groove he could wreck a batting line up, or he’d soften up the batters for someone else to strike.

We used to be like that in England for batsmen in general too. Never gave them a long enough run in the side, always chopping and changing. That seems to have changed over the last 10 to 15 years and is reflected in much better results as well. We give players a fair shot now to get established and we seem to embrace pace bowling and talented all rounders more now also as well. We just need to find that one more solid batsman for test cricket and a world-class spinner and we'll be a really strong side!

  • @Benmkent

I saw him in tandem with Michael Holding at Hesketh Park in Kent in the late 80s and they ripped through the 1st innings Kent batting with sheer pace - Malcolm himself was frightening quick on what was notoriously a dead pitch. I thought then he must surely play for England, and he did, but this was still the era of unenlightened English coaching and player management and he was wasted, along with Gloucester's David 'Syd' Lawrence.
