My brain has exploded. I need to gather the pieces and rewatch this about a dozen times. So much packed in, fascinating! Such an accomplishment, such memories! Having your mom help with a bit! Covid! Greg! Ghosts! I’d watch hours more of this quilt making - and trips through fabric markets! Whew! ❤❤❤
I did the same thing with my Raggedy Ann Quilt. So glad I did it in my 30s. I'm 63 now and no way I'd start another stitched by hand Quilt. I had a x friend that offered me 100 dollars for that Quilt. I could have just slapped her. Over 2 years of sewing not to mention all the hunting I did looking for Raggedy Ann and Andy fabric. Sometimes making a theme Quilt it's harder to find fabric in the theme than making the quilt itself. I never sell my quilts they are always gifts for friends and family. But to offer someone only 100 dollars for 2 years of work I paid twice that for the fabric. I know you can understand the insult I felt over her offer. I may have just gave it to her if she hadn't upset me so much with that offer.
Yep. I’m hand making a quilt for my daughter for a wedding present. The quilt top came as a precut hexie quilt in random patterns and color schemes. That alone cost about $225 USD (cost included shipping) and I still had to buy backing, batting, and more notions (some of my needles ran away) so the total cost is about $300 and possibly more.
Came for the quilt progress, stayed for the moustache development ;) Another amazing quilt Dave! My hexie quilt is up to about 4 years and that's with 2.5" hexies and only single bed sized!! Astounded as ever by your skills and dedication
Dave, I love this amazing quilt. It is a masterpiece. I hope you are proud of it, I can tell it means an awful lot to you. How your back holds up, I have no idea because there is such physical effort putting it all together on the floor. It was lovely to see you and your mother working at the quilt together. A truly touching video tonight, I am in awe of you! ❤
I did a king-sized one in four months, working from morning until night each day. In the end it’s so beautiful. Glad someone knows what I went through.
I started with my first ever sewing project in May 2020 during Covid. As a nurse, I felt it was good for my mental well being, coupled with the fact that we had strict lockdowns in Melbourne Australia. I had never sewn anything before. It was a queen sized reversible story/photo/memory quilt for my granddaughter in South Africa. I hand pieced all the irregular blocks and hand quilted the entire quilt. The centre piece was landscaped with wavy sections with a large tree and different scenarios and I put photos all over. Around this block were 20 photos starting from the scan to the caesarean section to the baptism and all the grandparents and great grandparents. I delivered it in 2022 and continued to sew as we were transiting through Croatia. I finally finished the quilt a month into my holiday. It took me two years. I am now making a quilt of all my son’s hoodies, also reversible. On the front is the history of his career and family, the backing consists of the hoodies. I am now busy exactly a year. I still have maybe two more months to go. Then I have two other quilts to make for my other children😅
1. Hi Mom! 2. What an accomplishment and the memories! I have a Dresden that will be 100% by hand. I'm doing quilt as you go and im at the stage of hand quilting. It's an extra special quilt for me because I started in our RV to do while glamping, but later it became a project my sister and i worked on together. She has since passed, so it already means a lot. ❤ 3. You are funny as hell, no DRAMA over pre-washing! I love it! 😂
I have never quilted. Custom macrame and braid in rugs are my niche. Saw a YT on how to make a hexie from a 6” circle and thought, I can do that. Welp….its now almost twin size. It’s rough but hand sewn with love. Started cutting and adding my mother and grams old cross stitched pillow cases that were too aged and stained to put on bed. Then started adding mothers old handkerchiefs and grands clothing. Now I have no choice but to finish! No idea how to sandwich, baste, bind or quilt but will do by hand also. After watching your video, I now plan to add some of father’s old military patches (wwII) and my Girl Scout patches from the 60’s. Thank you for sharing your journey!
I’m two years into my hexi quilt. I am in awe of your quilts. This one is a work of art! Travel, fabric from far away places, quarantine, exotic food, lunch box travel case, haunted apartment, dramatic music! This video has it all! I’m so inspired, I will finish my EPP quilt, I pledge to the completion of this Herculean task! Thank you Dave!
Loved this video. I'm doing a 1 inch hexy quilt as well. It's also going to be a very long term project. My travel kit is a 6 inch biscuit tin that has been with me on multiday hikes, bike rides and also comes to work. Thanks for showing us this lovely marathon project.
Fantastic! This quilt is a masterpiece. I sincerely hope you winter it in a quilt show at some point. It’s like a visual diary of your life and travels during the time of Covid. I applaud your patience.
Oh no, Dave! What have you started? I picked up an old EPP hexie project (about 21 hexies) that I had left in obscurity for years. Now I have started it up again with fresh new fabric scraps and it is TOO ADDICTIVE!!❤❤😅😅😊
You are the king of quilts patience of aGod to do this by hand, especially the size of it love your journey on making this quilt the filming of. The places you have been love love love the outcome.of this quilt Keep doing the amazing work that you do. I love watching your episodes. this quilt will have great memories for you and in the-years to come. ❤
Your hexi quilt is stunning. Beautiful fabrics variety. You accomplished an incredible amount in just 2 years. Another masterpiece. Lovely to spot your mom helping. Such fun
this video was fun to watch. I also have made a never ending yo yo quilt. In a car, motels, visits to family etc. I enjoy hand work. instead of using the pre-cut hexies, I cut them by hand out of freezer paper, ironed it on fabric, then hand stitched the fabric over the edges. No, glue, butt someday I might try startch.
My grandmother made her quilts with "paper piecing" and did a lot of hand sewing them together. The one thing she didn't do was the quilting. She hired that iut with someone who had a longarm quilter. She made quilts for so many of her grandkids and as wedding gifts. I remember her making my uncle a diuble wedding ring for his wedding gift. Hmm. That was a long time ago. I wonder if my Aunt still has it. I wonder how many holes it has if any? My sister and i was made a "sunbonnet sue" quit. I have no idea whatsoever happened to those quilts. I was so little but i remember looking at each block with amazed wonder of how special that quilt was. Now is love to make my great grand daughter and son a quilt. Ive never made a quilt . As soon as i can deside what design and color scheme for them. I will. My sweet Frankie just started her preschool ❣️🥰🥰💖
OMG What a wonderful quilt. Congrats on finishing it up and what an awesome story with all the traveling it did. I love it. I am currently working on a hexie quilt which I began a few yrs ago but put it down after my grandson's baseball season was over and then I didn't pick it back up until about a week ago. I want to do what you did...travel with it but I won't go to all the places you did. My next trip will be to Texas and then after that I will be going to Disney World in December. So I know I will be taking my kit with me. Thanks for the inspiration!
m super mad and hella jealous, dave. I spent thirteen years traveling thge world and would only do knitting bc it was too much to carry quilting shit everywhere. Never thought to take on EPP in my travels. Love seeing you travel, its having an itchy feet effect on me. Rock on and keep quilting. I mostly sew quilts by hand, should have thought of this 15 years agio!
What a wonderful quilt! Your travel & life documented in fabric! Loved seeing your mom working with you. I admire your dedication & commitment to handstitching the entire quilt!
I do not English Paper Piece. But I have watched a few of your tutorials. This one came through my feed with my same 90's lunch box! I now have a better use for this oldie lunch box!
I love your quilt. you are so creative. I cancelled my glue order. I am going to sew by hand. I saw another person sew by hand. Then I saw someone who glued. I wondered about all that glue. That person suggested not putting the glue close to the edge. I love seeing your mom help.
Had this video on in the background while I worked and man it just made the time fly. Really enjoying you and how real you are and frankly, we r alike in many ways, I'm just not brave enough to record myself. Thanks!!!
I give you much credit with sticking with the project. I made one totally by hand using diamond shape with no papers in my spare time . I hand quilted it in clam shell design. Won big ribbon at county fair.
My first hand project also wound up being a king-sized EPP hexi quilt! I am not done quilting it (I used fleece for the back and it's too warm to have on my lap in the summer, so it's been put aside until fall!) but I'm already missing the first parts of the project and can't wait until I'm done with my first so I can start my second!
Young man, this is a work of art. Well done, you shouldn’t be ‘shook ‘disheveled‘destroyed…….. you be ‘pleased and’proud as a peacock. It’s fantastic to see a Hexie Quilt actually FINISHED, and a King size, 100%hand pieced, hand stitched and HAND QUILTED. A HUGE ACHIEVEMENT. It has so many memories and you have stitched them all in. You have inspired me to get out my hexie box and find a few memories to stitch in place. I think I’ll have to divide mine into 4 different boxes, one for each grandchild. Then, after my days…… who knows if the quilts will be finished or in their boxes with Hexies ready to go. Then it will be up to them……. I’ll leave plenty of papers and material, needles and threads and a small ‘how to’. And love ❤from Nanny. Yes, thankyou for reminding me about my own Hexie box. Good luck for the future, love from Belfast NI.
I love your style- unapologetic, totally original, and FUN! Thank you so much for sharing. I’m watching TH-cam because I need some inspiration to carry on with my first EPP project. Your project and video is epically inspiring.
You absolutely are the most fascinating person. Your quilt journey is a joy to follow. I'd love to know what your career is. Your employers don't deserve you, that's what I do know! You are a genius.
I did my very first quilt ever as a hand stitched hexi 1" took me about the same amount of time. I started thinking it would be a couch quilt then a single, then a double and I just kept going. Sewed it all over Canada and Mexico. Not as wordly as yours!! Love it. It is my favourite of all and how I like to make them.
Wow ! This is awesome! What a great quilt this will be! Really special you are picking up fabrics from your travels! You’ve inspired me! I love EPP! Stumbled onto your videos.
I do not have the vocabulary for this EPIC quilt! DANG is just not gonna cut it. 😵💫 SEW. VERY. COOL!!!!!! I am a counter, if you ever have a few minutes to spare please update us with the number of hexies in that sucker! I have done 30 of 39 units needed for my own hexie EPP quilt, but there’s still a bunch to do after that. Started in Oct 21. I strip quilt by machine and EPP by hand. I don't put batting, but I use a flannel backing - no drama😂😂
I can see you when you’re like 80 looking for those 3 mustaches!…
Such fun memories!!….I love it!
