    Stopped there enroute from Portugal to Grand Canary with my Volks California. Aside from the quality of life, generally, there is no or very little crime. If I could only obtain some sort of "visa" extending time over 90 days. RH/Florida

    My wife and I were in Madeira last October. Its truly an amazing place! Getting crowded because of all the attention focused on Portugal in general.

    Thanks Nick ☺
    Not to mention, there's an abundance of friendly South Africans there too! 🇿🇦
    It's my favourite part of Portugal followed by Algarve, so I'd love to see more of course!
    Have a wonderful week my friend 🤗

    I've wanted to go to Madeira for years. Direct flights to FNC from the US tend to be quite expensive, and one-stop flights often involve long layovers. Combining Madeira with a trip to mainland Portugal and using easyJet between OPO or LIS and FNC is what I think most of us in the Midwest or West would find most budget-friendly.

    I live here! One of the advantages of starting out here is that the bureaucracy is much easier to navigate. It is far but there are frequent flights to the continent. The terrain is very steep and rugged so not a great place for anyone wiht mobility issues. One has to be fit to really enjoy living here. But, that is what makes Madeira so special. Flowers bloom all year round. I get cold easily so it can get damp and cold between January and April. The summers can get hot up into the 30s Celcius and high 80s Faranheit.

    Thought about doing a similar video clip(s) about the Azores, in particular about Sao Miguel, Terceira, Faial, etc?

    Nice job Nick, I often wondered about Madeira and Azores but never looked into it because I doubt I'd want to live on an island so far off the mainland. I know several people from the US that have visited or have plans to go to the Azores. I'll have to ask them why they chose there over Madeira.
    BTW: On your map of flights 2 in the US, Toronto is close but not. 😉

    We love Madeira, we spent over a month there in 2022. However, we didn't make it to the Algarve so I can't make a comparison.

    Great video, especially as we are going there for July and August, staying in Camara de Lobos. The only slight pain is getting there from the Algarve as you have to fly up to Lisbon and transfer.
    I am aware that pilots and aIrlines have to be trained and cleared to fly into the tricky airport in Funchal but have never really understood why someone does not fly there directly from Faro.

    • @AlgarveAddicts

      I agree, it would be lovely to have a direct flight from Faro. Maybe there's isn't enough demand?

    Not to be a partypooper, but Funchal is way overcrowded these days. I found it more noisy and more polluted than Madrid, Spain. The people also seemed very grouchy and I wondered if they were resenting people moving there and that their prices were going up so much. For a vacation, great, but to live there, no.

    • @AlgarveAddicts

      @@AlgarveAddicts A friend of mine moved to Funchal from Madrid and I visited him twice in about four months. Both times I could smell the exhaust fumes in the air and it really bothered me. There were so many cranes in the sky and so much construction that it was incessantly noisy there. I would say that that's Funchal but not all of Madeira. There are many untouched or little touched parts of the island. Also I found the food in Funchal to be great, so that's a positive point.

    • @desertdweller8520

      @@goldvideo I think I know where you were staying. There are areas in Funchal that are not so noisy or congested. I live here and it's nothing like Madrid. I don't know too many grouchy locals. Like anywhere else, there will always be grouchy people for whatever reason. Yes, many are feeling pinched but they are trying their best. All tourist places have crowds and traffic.

      @@goldvideo Yeah there is definitely a smog problem above Funchal, you can see it in videos and even in the pictures that we took when we were there. I hope they move to all electric vehicles to improve the air quality.

    Born in Terceira lived in the US for over 50 years. The Islands are beautiful but after a while it's like getting stuck in the same US state and no other states to visit., meaning to small. At least the mainland let's you drive to other countries.
