Welcome to an epic journey through time and space. Imagine gazing up at the night sky, knowing that in the distant future, two mighty galaxies are destined for a cosmic dance of epic proportions. This is the story of the impending collision between our very own Milky Way and the Andromeda Galaxy.
In approximately 4.5 billion years, the Milky Way will collide with the Andromeda Galaxy in an event already dubbed the Andromeda-Milky Way collision. This dramatic encounter will reshape the universe as we know it.
Astronomers have long known that this collision is inevitable. By measuring the Doppler shift of Andromeda's spectral lines, they've confirmed that Andromeda is on a direct course toward us. Careful studies of the motion of Andromeda’s satellite galaxies have further revealed the true trajectory of this galactic giant.
Using sophisticated simulations, scientists have been able to predict the unfolding of this cosmic event. Although the exact details depend on the structure of the galaxies and the dark matter haloes surrounding them, the general picture is clear.
Over the course of billions of years, the Milky Way and Andromeda will engage in a series of close passes. These gravitational interactions will distort their structures in spectacular ways, creating stunning cosmic fireworks.
Ultimately, about 10 billion years from now, the two galaxies will merge to form a single, larger galaxy. This new galaxy, humorously named ‘Milkdromeda,’ will be a giant elliptical galaxy, a far cry from the spiral shapes of its predecessors.
At the heart of this new galaxy will be a pair of supermassive black holes, destined to become a binary system. This binary will eventually spiral inward, emitting powerful gravitational waves, and merge into an even larger black hole.
While current observatories like LIGO cannot detect such massive mergers, future missions such as ESA’s LISA (Laser Interferometer Space Antenna) will be able to observe these grand events from distant parts of the universe.
However, this cosmic dance will be too slow for our Sun, which will not survive to find a new home in Milkdromeda. Instead, we will rely on simulations to witness the awe-inspiring outcomes of this galactic collision.
