Yes, XY Ash was surely the Best, but the Problem is, he was 'suddenly' the best. You can't call it 'character progression' or anything like that if nothing actually happened. He was just rewritten to be good all of a sudden. There was no actual Event between Before-XY and XY! Also, he focused way too much on Greninja, leading many people to state things like 'His other Pokemon were just like Tools for him!" And regardless of all that, of course, Serena dissapearing for good is just a Giant Shame and people are upset, even in 2020 still! Point is, the Anime has Problems. And it needs spine to accept and work on that - which is a Problem, because the Owners of this Franchise... well, you know...
Well actually in Dp he was very good too, and so if you ignore BW as not continuity and as a reboot, it seems like this is what Ahs would be like after DP, having beat two legendaries before leaving sinnoh, and so in XY being much more skilled and mature, since in DP he was also mature, but had to learn along the way.
