  • Season #24 Episode#:24 Shaun and Bobby talk to Jonah Harley of Hydrogen Sports about his fancy new ball machine.
Jonah spent quite a few years in Silicon Valley honing his skills and when he finally found time to be creative for his own hobby (tennis) he decided he had the perfect skill sets to build a better mouse trap.. er.. tennis ball machine.
From their website: "The tennis ball machine has hardly changed since the 1980s. With lead-acid (car) batteries, heavy motors and antiquated controls, “portable" machines are anything but. Using the latest in rare-earth brushless motors, lithium-ion batteries, precision motion control and smart-phone technology, Hydrogen Sports has cut the weight and size to less than half, while improving performance and introducing an incredibly easy-to-use interface.
The Proton is far and away the smartest machine on the market. Simply tap the screen where you want the ball to go, choose a speed and spin, and our proprietary algorithms figure out the rest. Internal sensors and precision actuators ensure that every shot is delivered on target."

Just came across this video. I'm a Proton owner, and there's a lot to like about it. But there are clear areas for improvement.
    1. Reliablity should be better. Mine has been back to the shop twice now due to part failure. About 60K balls fired so far. That's not that many.
    2. The hopper is lightweight and foldable. Nice, but it's too small and the configuration is poor. It's a pain to load. Balls fall out during use, and as you're adding them to the hopper.
    3. Drift, which is a byproduct of the light weight. Like other users, I've tried various solutions. None really work. It's not a big problem, but a definite annoyance.
    4. The Bluetooth connection to the Apple watch is unreliable. Sometimes it works, sometimes not. When it does, it's a great feature for controlling the machine. It would be nice to have an inexpensive, basic slim remote as an alternative, at least for starting/stopping a drill. Hate carrying phone while hitting.

Good video. You’d probably get more views if you put the word tennis and hydrogen in the title. Really deserves more views. I’m probably going to get one

They are starting a trial in Canada which will be their first foray out of the US. I'm sure Europe will be soon after that!

@@gotennispodcast that's sad. They can't get a software developer even when they are charging $1700 for the machine.
