  • On Twitch there is a "retro" category, that got me thinking about what makes a game retro? There is more to it than you would think!
A BIG thanks to everyone who helped! Please check out their stuff!

I love the collabs! It was so cool to get other gamers opinions on the subject! I love seeing music artists collab on youtube together, it has exposed to so many great artists this way! Let's see more collabs! It was way cool of you to let them give a quick promotion for their channel in your video!

Relating retro to nostalgia is a perfect way to describe what retro is. It's more than just a time period, or how antiquated the technology that made it was. I believe the newer titles that emulate the old school style really reach for those nostalgia points to help you fall in love with their game. So retro! This was a fun video to watch, thank you for looking into this topic and sharing all these awesome streamers with us.

Even after all of my discussions on this I don't have a definitive stance. But I do use the word vintage more.

14:36 I kinda feel like there's an era missing in bettween "Nintendo/Sega" and "Internet". Something like an "Early 3D" era, maybe, starting with the PS1 and N64 and potentially going up to and including the PS2/GC/Xbox generation. This was the era where games shifted towards 3D (with widely varying success), but where the modern internet connection dependence was not yet a thing. I guess you could argue that original Xbox would fit into the internet era, since it DID have proper internet connectivity support unlike the other two. After that, starting with the Xbox360/Wii/PS3, all consoles had proper internet connectivity support and digital stores, which places them firmly in the "Internet" era.

I'm pretty sure I'm retro. Or maybe I'm just straight vintage, hmmm....

1990-96 was a odd time in video game history, the pixels where still strong but 3d like Tomb Raider and Crash Bandicoot was on the rise.

Rewatching this I see that you put Wii as retro because it is 4x3. Did you know it has 16x9 option? New Super Mario Bros. Wii was actually forced as a 16x9 game to show more of the level for multiplayer playthroughs. If you play in 4x3 you get black bars on top and bottom. Come to think of it PlayStation 2, GameCube, and Xbox do have widescreen support for many other games.

We played the Wii on a tube TV, so if there was widescreen support we didn't know back then. Not until I got a Wii U and started playing my games there.

Bummer...this happened to another video after I edited it in the TH-cam editor. I guess I will need to reedit it and repost it. Thanks for letting me know. 😁
