The entire 240 km (150-mile) stretch of the Pra River and its tributaries has become contaminated with chemicals, many of which are banned in Western countries due to their carcinogenic properties. These toxic substances have severely compromised the health of local communities, as well as their water supply, cocoa crops, fisheries, and wildlife. Only two decades ago, cancer and birth defects were nearly unheard of in Ghana. Instead of rigorously enforcing anti-galamsey laws, the government has resorted to arresting protesters in a misguided effort to preserve the ruling party’s electoral standing. The directive to treat protesters in the manner the nation has witnessed must originate from the highest levels of government. Parliament should form an independent committee to investigate why protesters, arrested for misdemeanors, are being unlawfully detained. THE SCOURGE OF GALAMSEY MUST STOP!
