I really liked this one. I think it is particularly good with retrospect. We see Conan as a leader for the first time and Almaric's observations are a great compare/contrast to Conan on his own/Conan with responsibility. However the thing I find hilarious following along with publication order is we have only seen one story set before this. So it wont be until future stories that we really see how reckless Conan is. I loved Thugra Khotan. I think he is the best villain so far even if he can almost be summarized as "Rapist Wizard" The thief at the beginning I liked a lot more than Taurus from the last story. I bought that this guy was a super bad ass thief. And you mention all the tropes that are used in this story, I think I am so fast to forgive them because: 1. I expect them. and 2. The are relatively new to Conan so I haven't had time to get burned out of them yet. But what really shined for me, besides the characterization for Conan, is the battle. I think Howard really did a great job with the battle we have that happens.
Oh yeah I definitely agree with you about the battle descriptions - they're so good! Also, I kind of felt the same way as you, the tropes didn't bother me a ton, but I could see someone without the historical perspective you and I have maybe thinking it was a little tropey. Black Colossus was the first REH Conan audiobook I listened to so it’s got a special place in my heart. I really enjoy your perspective on the story and the elements within. Keep it up!
I think this is the conan story Ive read the most. I first read the republished marvel comic from the 70s, than the independent french comic, than the original story and than this summary. To me it is very similat to “a witch shall be born” but maybe only bc I read them in the same marvel omnibus. Anyway idk why I wrote that I just love this channel and I guess every comment helps with the algorhytm. Oh and I love how anacrhonistic this story feels. The city and the army feels ancient like a city state. But as the armor of conan and the heavy chavalry is described it feels almost renaissance. Truly feels like a different world. The french comic captured it the best. But I just love the old school badass look of the 70’s marvel version. There was also a marvel comic about how conan helps the brother of Yasmela to eschape after this battle. And we also see Amalric in another marvel comic that is based on Howards “slave queen”. Its not a conan story but marvel adapted as one. Changing the names and puting in amalric and Conan as the main characters.
Hey mate just found this channel. Big fan of Conan of course and always would love to hear what others have to say. If you don't mind, here's some criticism I've for this video: 1. I think replaying audio of the the text is nice, but as someone who is familiar with the series and have reread them often it feels slow. I think its good for newbies mind, so I don't mind it too much. 2. I think there could be some good analysis on the PROSE. Prose is something Howard excelled at, and there really needs more dissection on it. The rest on the plot, and how you felt its a bit anticlimactic is totally valid, it could have be a proper duel. 3. Lastly, and as much as I do appreciate you sourcing the Dark Horse art in the description, I think it makes more sense to display the book info (Conan comic, issue number, artist, published date, etc) way better, just so watchers can hunt down the comics later. 4. Lastly, and I realise you're gonna tackle the comics, maybe add something like "This story has been adapted by so so, in this issue, in this year, etc" at the end. Keep at it, by Crom! PS: I can't download your video on mobile for some reason. Not the biggest issue but I do prefer to download videos and watching them outside or at the park if I need to. Maybe display different comics too (like the Savage Sword versions).
Yes, great story but you do feel the story had to be shortened and the bad guys part was the only part that could be edited. A shame an uncut version didn't see the light of day at a later date.
