Mannnn, the sports betting investment change is awful. It disheartens me to see all the sports betting apps constantly being advertised during NBA games. Those companies are going to corrupt all sports as they get more power.
I know… all sports effectively came to an end when betting was legalized across the board. Watching betting ads between free throws, just to name one ridiculous occurrence, is just plain gross. Basically turned sports into one giant casino, and as we all know, “the house ALWAYS WINS.”…

I do like the new rules .The compensations for star players have become ridiculous lately,and it will also discourage star players from demanding trades,because they would be able to land on poor rebuilding teams.

Cheap owners get to stay cheap. Now Steve ballmer can't add a 6 year mid level contract every year and add salary via trade. Luke Reggie for Eric Mason bones. Got bones bird rights so they can offer him max(probably not likely though).
with regards to the min. 65 games, we can probably expect superstars to dress for the game and play less than 10 minutes to qualify.

But doing that will tank their stat averages. It would only work if you've played like 60 legit games and just to get the award you suit up a couple minutes for a couple games to hit the threshold.

Instead of a minimum games played for awards eligibility it should be minimum minutes played - that way a player can't simply start the game, leave the arena at the first stoppage, and log their "game played".

It's an odd rule I guess. I think you're right, we will see a lot of that bs log in check out. According to the players, it's the teams that cause load management, but I feel like if the players really wanted to play they could. I do think 65 full games played is a lot for just all nba. For mvp, I'm all for it, it doesn't really effect anything tho since there have only been 5 players in nba history to win mvp playing less than 65 games. But all nba it will have an impact

They can multiple great players, but they have to draft and develop them, similar to the young OKC big 3 with KD, Russ and Harden and GSW big 3. I LOVE this, it shows which organizations have the best type of Front Office and player development.

Would be interesting to see if the NBA gives you a salary cap discount for players that you drafted. It would be a cool concept to incentivize teams to draft well

The 65 game rule will be interesting...in the short term you'll see some obscure names get all NBA honors, but in the long term, future NBA stars will see the incentive early to play as many games as possible
i'm not sure it will be good in the long term. resting has it's benefits and the ultimate goal is winning a championship. i could see players caring more about being rested and avoiding injury to help their chances of winning a title. but power to those guys that get honors that they might not otherwise get
@James Stinedurf the players "care" about winning as they draw closer to the end of their careers...however, in the beginning all players are more concerned about making money...its why they have disputes over contracts, and if the owners find a way to short change a player because they didn't qualify for an award then they will do so...case in point here...Klay missed making an All NBA/All defensive team a few years back which cost him about 25 million during contract negotiations. Despite players being rich....they don't like losing money like that.
One piece of advice older players give younger players is never to leave money on the table because you can never get it back...so they'll play more and more in order to secure the bag.

It delegitimizes the regular season. Also, if they aren’t able to play ball in the regular season, then why should they get to compete in the postseason? Lastly, there isn’t a lot of roster spots in the nba. They’re robbing young or healthy players from an opportunity to play in the nba. They’re robbing fans from seeing the actual best basketball players on earth from competing. It's because players are making a fuck ton of money so that should be an incentive to play the season. They didn't sign a contract for the playoffs, they signed a contract for the whole season so the goal should be to play the whole season......not half. Secondly, if you're the best player on your team and you are frequently "resting", is your team going to even make it to the playoffs if they aren't good enough to carry the load?
Finally the last three NBA champions all have had their star players starting 60+ games. Giannis started 61 in 2020-21, Steph played 64 in 21-22 and Jokic played 69 this past season. They are out there grinding and winning championships.......this whole "resting" myth is bullshit.
What youre doing is making excuses for players like KD, Kyrie, Kawhi, Harden, Embiid and Ben Simmons......players who want max contracts but barely give you 50 fucking games a season. The best players are always available and always are ready to play......that's what separates the men from the spoiled brats.
players are not overpaid because they want to be, they are overpaid because the owners and GM's decide they have to pay them. hopefully going forward most teams will be more cost conscious and take into consideration the salary cap ramifications of over spending on non top tier talent
Well, players through their agents do ask for specific amounts for their contracts, so your statement is not exactly true. It's really both sides that determine how "overpaid" a player is.

I would have made even harder to supermax players to move. If you signed a supermax with a team, this means that's YOUR team. You are the face of the franchise. You have to play through it, good or bad. Nobody forced you to take 230 millions. If you want help to win, take a pay cut, sign for 110 millions you're still gonna be crazy rich and win. But if you want the whole bag, don't complain later if your team sucks

I think its interesting that now you can't trade more than 3 picks outright (lets say 5 if you do swaps on the years in between). Primarily because the KD trade established his value as about 6-7 first round picks. Which means that now elite guys are basically out of reach and cannot be traded for as much. This could impact if big stars can even be moved anymore
I'm happy with the rules. The nba used to be where the stars even played all 82 or close to it. Now stars can take off whenever they want. Everyone knows today's nba is alot softer then previous decades which is why it gets alot of slack. The new rules are great for the league, all they need to do now is stop with all the tikie tack fouls

This new CBA all came out because of guys like KD, Kyrie, Harden! All signing deals and requesting trades! I am all for that bc they sign these contracts (which are not that long), and just ask out bc they know they have the power. It skrews up the teams and players end up getting send around in trade packages (ala Dlo, Isiah thomas, etc). As a Celtic fan it will hurt us bc we likely can't offer Jaylen brown and JT a supermax or have the ability to trade them should they want out. I think it will help make the NBA more competive with talent spread out!

I love the changes. I want teams to build from the ground up. I want parity. I don't want to make it easy for my team to lose its star players. I don't care about awards. So long as owners don't get to keep the money and revenue is split fairly, I have no complaints.

Owners pay for everything…training facilities, healthcare, travel, uniforms, training staff, food, they pay arena/stadium, coaches, advertising….so yeah the owners should get to keep the money. The deserve a roi and money to pocket yearly because they can make more money investing in other things than owning an nba team. Nba teams are very expensive. Their profit isn’t even big enough for them to own their arena. They need capital to function….which they can only get from billionaires multi millionaires. They can only get billionaires if they their teams provide regular cash income and roi to the owners.

Just because a player is eligible for a Max contract, doesn’t mean club has to offer it. I think that side effect will only effect poorly run franchise and they will be stuck overpaying a mediocre roster

A hard cap fixes so many screwball problems. As far as "minimum games required" goes; in all likelihood star players sat out some games they could've played, so if the current rules had been in place, they simply would've made sure they played more games. There might be a glitch here or there under the new rules, but overall I would expect that the most deserving players will end up winning the awards. Letting players invest in sports betting is ???. This is just a flat-out AWFUL idea.
I like the 65 games rule, I would probably like to see it combined somehow with a minutes per game requirement too though.
I also don't see the problem in "superstar" players not being named all nba if they've missed 17+.
I'd much rather see Anthony Edwards be named all nba playing 79 games than Anthony Davis playing 55.

The kd trade would still happen the compensation would just be different. This wont change anything just lower the market value of disgruntled stars.

This new rules are going to kill the NBA, we will never have a golden state warriors type of team again, and that's where most of the views and money comes from people watching and buying merch for the big super teams.
Serious question. Whats to stop a team from padding a guys number of played games by having them check in and pretty much not contribute? E.g., have a guy nursing a quad tear that you want to resign next season to a super max enter the game? Put him in the game for 1 possession then just have him foul a guy, then take him out. He'd be listed as having played for like 1 minute, then you bench him the rest of the game.
Is there anything preventing this? I know not all injuries will work with this, but it does work for some, particulqrly when the player is still able to move around the court.
Nothing would stop them from doing that, but their per game averages would tank, and that'd probably prevent them from getting selected for awards.
For example. Let's say a guy averages exactly 20 ppg for the first 55 games, gets hurt, and has to miss a bit of time late in the season. He comes back, checks into 10 games for 1 minute each without scoring. His ppg average would immediately drop from 20 to 16.9
The most important abilities are availability and reliability. You can’t help he club from the tub…
There's a loophole since it gave a number of games not minutes. You can just simply play said star for 1 minute then rest them.
That will tank their averages since it will still count as a game played.

You can overcome the rule when your max/ near max player is restricted free agent, you can trade 7 year pick and increase payroll

They also got bones and his bird rights if they want to offer him a max contract they can (probably not likely though).
Rather than hating on them getting overpayed how about we just stick to them being underplayed. Always remember, no one is paid what they are really worth and bring in to the organization in the back end. This is gonna be interesting and THE BEST PART IS, no ody has been wanting these #1 guys in the All-Star games anyway because THEY DON'T PLAY or compete when they bring in/are worth, so much money. Let them get theirs, but keep the rewards for the hungry guys putting in the work everyday, ya digg. They've gotten my attention, that's for sure lol

These rules are fine if players were robots or some kind of statistics generating machines. Superteams aren't that bad bc it doesn't always work out. Also not every great player is The Man. Look at how the twolves just lost to the Lakers. Minnesota's best guys should be complimentary pieces. Staying in MN, look at Andrew Wiggins. Not a bad player at all, an allstar starter in fact but a #2 on a championship team who was paid like a #1 and didn't thrive in that role.
All I'm saying is NBA and nbpa can negotiate a deal, make a nice coloring book but reality is going to be way outside the lines

NBA should have made the Supermax only eligible for players that have played 70 percent of the games during the course of that contract..
Supermax is now unsustainable. Look at CEL Tatum & Brown would count for 60-70% of salarycap? What do you got left to create a team?
Side note. Defense will suffer even more now as guys will only want to score to make awards and avoid injury thru 65 games. The league is very close to being washed.
Rebound, blocks, steals per game leader are awards as well as dpoy. First defense honors is another. Being good at defense and stopping other top players from scoring helps players improve their chance’s become an nba all star and all first nba team.
If your a great player and you let opponents light you up on defense and don’t try…your team fans aren’t going to vote for you for the all star game. Lebron, the big 3 heat, big 3 Celtics, spurs, giannis, warriors (draymond greene), Kwahi…change the culture of the nba…to be a popular player and to be considered good/great, a player has to play great defense and be a two way player that gets stats across every category.
No longer can you get away with just scoring a bunch of points and a bunch of assists. You won’t see a Carmelo or Steve nash type guy really getting all star’s selections, big contract offers, and a ton of fans playing no defense or horrendous defense. Also, you stopping other players from scoring, getting boards, assists means their stats are lower which means the less numbers you have to get.
So in conclusion there are more awards than scoring leader.
All nba teams being position-less now could be a good thing.

Warriors are also getting punished for the fact that their superstars were drafted and developed as opposed to teams that are trading to build super teams.
they don't have the money and revenue to do so. GSW, Lakers, Knicks are in densely populated, big population cities with huge industries that are extremely profitable and have a large population of people with super large incomes and wealth...so they can charge more for tickets, have more fans to sell merk and to increase the tv viewership of their games which increases ad revenue. Those teams generate more profit because of were they are locate. San Antonio, Charlette, Orl, Detriot, Pacers do not have a population in their area that can generate that type of profits. Smaller markets don't have the revenue to make paying higher contracts then large markets economically feasible. Owners would sell the team or dissolve it and invest their money and time into something that has a greater roi. The nba would be like 5 teams if they did what you suggested.
While I think it’s fair to have a minimum games played to be considered for top honors, I feel like this will also water down those same honors like with the all star game. This means the hall of fame will also become more watered down.

You're wrong about the super max contracts. Low level players may be eligible for super max that does not mean a team will offer it.

I'm not knocking the ordinary Joes and Marys who engage in that habit....but if you're striving to be the BEST player in the NBA...nobody can convince me that that player(s) who smoke weed will have a high work ethic and display a willingness to give it their all (rebounding, Assists, scoring) as well as show leadership traits.

We're abducting these kids from college education so they come to the NBA (Maybe Talented) but lack fundamentals and tournament experience they'd get had they played in college. That's what this mid-season tournament is for.

College ball is significantly different than the nba now. With Europe developing better players now and teenagers (one and done) being so good now and the over all talent of the nba being so high now….college and the big dance offers very little benefit in the development of young nba players. College court, the ball, the length of game, the rules, the shot clock, the talent level are so different…it doesn’t help much anymore. The size, athleticism, skill, knowledge of nba players is so much higher than ncaa…that they can’t bring what works in the ncaa to the nba. The game is different.
Idk what fundamentals you think nba players don’t know…or have but in reality they do. Anything you think they’re lacking fundamentally is because of a reason. You don’t see back to the basket post game because centers/pf will get doubled and stripped. You don’t see midrange shots because it doesn’t make sense for 95 percent of the league t o take those shots due to analytics. You got to hit 50-60 plus percent of those for it to be a worth while shot. Players iso instead of passing most times because help defenders and defenders are to cover the distance to lock down the open player or get a steal.
The only thing most young players suck at is shooting the ball, doing pull up jumpers, quick catch and shoot, and turn around jumper. And that simply takes years of practice. With an nba shooting coach.
To have a good team, all players salaries must add up to the cap. So NBA salaries will go down steeply.
So when a player invests on betting and shaves points it’s just gonna be ok?
*There is an easy fix for this* It should be simply called the MAJOR INJURY RULE. The 65 games should only be for load managing players. If the injury is not SEASON ENDING? Then you have to play 65. But if you can reasonably play and choose not to? Then it should count against you.
What if you’re injured and you can’t play 65 games then unfortunately you weren’t healthy enough to get a regular season award. I think this rule will help, instead of doing something least invasive or trying to come back early…if your already going to not make 65 games….players will choose to take the better but longer injury recovery option. It also makes it so teams and players can’t try to do least invasive not the best long term recovery route because if they won’t want to be out 16 games for two seasons. Some guys get hurt, sit out, try to play, get hurt worse and have to sit next season.

I see little to no evidence that parity makes the league better or that people will watch more if we have parity. There is a very simple solution to getting rid of super teams, get rid of max salaries. The only reason it is even feasible to trade a superstar without getting a superstar in return is because superstar players’ salaries are capped at a percentage of the salary cap. Get rid of that, then a true superstars cannot be traded for a bunch of role players and picks.
No because only super wealthy big market high profit teams would be able afford superstars and they probably could afford multiple. The spurs for example don’t make the same amount of money as the knicks or lakers…. So all the spurs stars would have left for a huge contract else wear.
Parity definitely makes the league better and more entertaining. Cavs vs gsw years was boring. Having teams with more equal talent and having more equal probability of Winning a championship is more entertaining. No max salary means less money for role players, bench. Yes this is supposed to force teams to draft all and develop players however it is also punishing teams that drafted and developed players into superstars and then try to sign them after putting in the work while they were in their rookie contracts.
