- Time for another BRAND COMPARISON video!! 🤩 I'm really enjoying this types of videos, so I hope you'll like it too 🤗
It's really fun to see the differences in the cut and compare them. I can't wait to try this with the next brand. Not sure what it will be though! 😅🤷🏻♀️

Janette!!!! I am sooo happy to see you do the puzzles I sent to you🥰 It looks so easy the way you put the puzzles together. I am so glad you had fun. I agree with you about the differences in the piece quality and the hold when you did the pick up challenge. You could add to your list, tight puzzle piece fit versus loose puzzle piece fit, puzzle piece thickness and puzzle box quality and ease for storage. Usually older brands did large boxes for their puzzles. I would surprised if you find older puzzles in smaller boxes. Great video, I loved it 🥰 💕
Thank you again for sending them over Laura!! I really appreciate it 🥰 I enjoyed the puzzles so much, even though the Jelly Beans one was on a more difficult side 🤗 And thank you for the great suggestions! I will go add them onto my list now! 😁👌🏻
Additional thoughts for comparing brands:
Joined pieces (new) - Are multiple pairs or groups of pieces still joined?
Ease of disassembly - After scrunching up the pieces, are there many pairs and groups of pieces still joined that you have to separate individually?
Special features - Glow in the dark, metallic foil stamped, irregular edges, inner edges
Box size - How quickly would this brand fill up my storage space?
Is there a picture on the side of the box to find it in a pile?
Puzzle/box match - Does the colour reproduction on the puzzle match that on the box/poster? Does the box/poster crop off part of the image?
Image edge - Does the image on the puzzle have critical parts cropped off such as the end of text lost, a bird near the edge with the beak cropped off?
Damaged pieces - Pieces bent, torn in two, layers separating, little cracks on the surface of tabs, glue/gunk on the surface
Artist - Often the image makes the puzzle and I may look for other puzzles by the same artist, which are mostly from the same brand
The difference is in the history of Springbok! The company was started in 1963 by the Lewins. In 1967 they sold it to Hallmark. This is when the quality starts changing. It was very subtle and gradual at first based on the vintage ones i have, but by the 1990s it is apparent in the type of cardboard and the images. In 2002 Allied Products took it over and that's what we have today....a huge difference from the 60s. If you can find one from then, get it even if you don't like the image so you can see for yourself 🧐
The quality started to deteriorate in the later 70’s because the Lewin’s stayed on staff several years after the company was sold. Once they left, their irreplaceable expertise was sadly missed!
Great video! I loved both puzzles but vintage Springbok definitely has a special place in my collection. I would add a bit about the box quality to your list.
Thank you! 🤗 There definitely is something special about the vintage Springbok puzzles - even the box itself makes it more special! 😍 And yes, adding the box quality is a great idea! 😁👌🏻
This was so fun to watch Janette ❤ I’ve never completed a springbok puzzle before. I watched your video while I was puzzling 😊
Also love the rating system idea!!
When I did that that pencil Springbok puzzle, I didn't like how hard I had to press the pieces of to get them to fit together. It removed the somatic feedback feel of the piece being in the correct place that you get when it just fits in exactly. Also I started doing it on a Becko puzzle board that has a padded felt surface. The board was fine for other puzzles, but with the Springbok one, because the padding on the board gives way slightly I couldn't press the pieces together properly and had to switch to doing the puzzle on a hard surface.
Great video! The difference with older Springboks is definitely real. The difference is even greater if you do one from the 1960-70s. Those are just incredible quality with some really cool images.
I have never done a Springbok (old or new) so this was super interesting! Thanks!
You should totally try one! They're so fun, especially when you have a good picture! 😉
I grew up doing Springbok puzzles and feel at home with random cut. In fact, I remember the first time I did a ribbon cut puzzle feeling a tad disappointed at how "plain" the pieces seemed to be.
I've done Springbok before and they're quite a challenge. Mine is from 2017 but I think you can't beat the piece shape variety if that's what you're looking for. Happy New Year Janette! P.S. I know I'm really late in saying it but the sentiment is still the same.
Great video - and Happy New Year! Thanks for the stroll down memory lane (I guess I’m one of those “old-timers”, lol). I remember doing the Jelly Beans puzzle years ago, and I really enjoyed it. I wish I had kept it. I just didn’t have the appreciation for “the little things”. I love your idea of keeping a tally of puzzle characteristics. I think a lot of people (including myself) will find it useful. Looking forward to the next one.
How pieces fit together is a big factor when puzzling. Vintage Springbok puzzles are way better quality and so much fun to do. I get excited when i see them at the thrift store. I have done newer Springbok as well and the quality is not the same at all. I have a few vintage Springbok in my stash that i hope to do this year. I did the Springbok "love" puzzle from the 1970s with some help from family. It was challenging but at the same time so much fun. Happy puzzling to you.
I really enjoyed this video. I learned something about the way older puzzles were constructed compared to how newer puzzles are constructed.
I've done both old and new Springbok puzzles. I actually prefer the old style of Springbok. I had a new one last year and so disappointed over the cut found a lot of connected pieces.
This was my first old Springbok and I have to admit that the difference was quite obvious 😅 The first Springbok I ever tried was a new one last year and I had exact same experience as you 😬🙈
I like the new rating system. For recommendations of a brand, are you waiting until you complete a certain number? Completing per puzzle?
Vintage Springboks are soo nice. I have around 10 and the majority of them I just paid $2 each.
Maybe you could add to your list enjoyment quality if that applies.
Janette, great video. I loved it! So interesting and informative 🎉🎉🎉
I'm doing my first Heye AND my first 2000. 🫣🫣🫣 Zozoville. It's way too hard for me but sooooo freakin' cute I couldn't resist. Has anyone else done it?
Thanks again Janette. ❤❤❤
Thank you so much! 🤗 Good luck on your puzzle! I like Heye puzzles, but some of the images can be a bit difficult 😅 Anyhow, I LOVE Zozoville collection - they're adorable!! I'm sure you'll love the process even though the image is on a more difficult side 😉 I haven't done any of the Zozoville yet, but I have done many Heye puzzles 😁
And yeah the circular and octagonal boxes of the old Springboks just did not hold up very well.
The circular boxes used cotton tape that doesn’t survive very well past 50 years :/
i seen alot of complaints in forum about Springbok. The quality turn downhill. Maybe there were silent cost cutting done behind manufacturing. i haven't had any Springbok before and would avoid getting any time soon...
Question(s) for vintage Springbok fans: Do all of them come in a larger box? What years count as "vintage"? I've done a few now from the earlier 2000s, but suspect that those count as newer puzzles.
You can tell if it's a vintage Springbok by the size of box and if it has a poem on the back. Generally larger square black boxes with white writing and poems on the back indicate vintage Springbok but if you look closely on boxes you can generally find a date. Some older ones are in round or octagon boxes. The older ones are way better quality and much more enjoyable.
So cool to see you do the pencils puzzle. I have it on my "to do" shelf. It occurred to me that you could've done a time lapse taking apart the jelly bean puzzle and run it backwards instead of building it again 😜💚🧩
Oh you should really tackle this puzzle!! It was so enjoyable! 😍 Hahaha why did I not think of that 😂🙈 At least I got a taste of how difficult the puzzle is I guess 😅😜
