How to draw Celtic Knots on a Grid

- I've recently got into drawing Celtic Knots and have been using a method I've used for years, adapted from a book I had over twenty years ago. If you know which book it might be, please do let me know because I've forgotten!
I do have some recommendations for finding more about Celtic Art. A couple of channels on TH-cam; David Nicholls and Aon Celtic Art are both really helpful. I've also been working through Aidan Meehan's 'The Book of Celtic Design' and have found lots of inspiration there.
I also have a watercolour celtic knot tutorial over on my other channel:

SUPPLIES
Pens:
I like uni-pin waterproof fine line drawing pens. I use every size from 0.03 to 0.8 so I buy them in sets of multiple sizes whenever I see an offer on them!

Sketchbook:
Made by me to be perfect for making circular designs! I used to sell these but they were pricey to make in small quantities so didn't sell many ... but if there's demand, I could look into it again!

Making Celtic knots has been the biggest mystery for me. Thank you helping me to understand how to start. ❤😮
You’re welcome!
Kia ora from Aotearoa (New Zealand)! Wow thank you for sharing this easy, well explained tutorial. I got half way of watching another woman doing a tutorial on the Celtic knot, & I was just left totally confused & frustrated, but thanks to you I can now learn this with ease. I've also checked out some more of your beautiful work & am very happy to be a new subscriber for you ❤ thank you again & I hope my message finds you & you're family well. 💌

WOW!!! I've always struggled with the ends .... you've made it sooooo incredibly simple! Now it's quick & easy, peasy, japanesey!!! You have no idea how much frustration, wrinkles & paper you've saved me bwahahahahahahaha! Forever grateful. A multitude & endless blessings to you! Thank you once again! Greetings from Cape Town, South Africa 👋😊
I love the David Nicholls videos! He’s quite funny and has quite a portfolio of beautiful art. I am still trying to practice enough so I can figure the weaving by myself. Your explanations as you drew the knots are very helpful. Thank you! Hope to see more.
I am a huge David Nicholls fan too! Nice to see someone else doing this.
Ingenious way of not making a mistake with a cross over líne.
Oh I do still make mistakes :)
The book I’m thinking of went into a box when I moved a few months ago, so I can’t access it yet. It was hand-drawn and possibly comb-bound, and advanced from simple geometrics to complex geometrics to animal interlaces. It was 8 1/2 by 11 and it was drawn on a boat in the San Francisco Bay Area, in the 1980s. When I find it, I’ll post the Title & Author here.
Thank you for the tour. 🌱🌿💚
Thanks, do let me know if you remember it!
@@loudavisdrawing I will find it, every day is one day closer to that. 😎 Another thing I remember is that she had you fold paper in certain symmetries.
For instance: fold in half, then in thirds, as if you were going to cut out a paper snowflake.
•Then draw a short pair of parallel pencil lines up to the fold line. That will be the width of your interlaces. The angle to the fold will determine many things.
•At least one pair of pencil lines come to each fold line. Then draw the lines to connect the fold laces to each other. I think each lace has to cross another lace. These will be shaded over and under in the final drawing.
•Then carefully cut out between the laces, starting at the folds. When you unfold it you have a rough sketch of a pattern that you use to draw your final pattern from (unless you are a scherenschnitte artist and it’s already perfect 😉).
•There was a set of mathematical rules to follow that I don’t remember completely (like how many times a lace had to cross another lace to prevent a mathematical mishap, etc.
•Is this a method you have seen, and does it have a name?
•I remember using it to design cuff bracelets in ultrasuede.
@@loudavisdrawing I found it, It is an early version of “Design Your Own Paper Cut Celtic Knots, Molly’s Magic Method ©️ by Molly Swan-Sheeran and it is copyright 1999, later than I thought. There is a later version, which is also out of print, but you could try searching Thrift Books, Good Reads, Barnes & Noble, etc. under her name. Good luck.
So well explained! Thanks so much. Now I’ve found a new obsession 😂
This is a great tutorial! I especially love the skinny curvy one at the end.
Thank you so much!
Me fascinan los diseños celtas con sus trisquetas, y tejidos geométricos, me intriga quien o quienes inventaron originalmente este arte geometrico increíblemente armonioso y equilibrado expresión particular del pueblo celta. Gracias 😊
I'm thrilled to learn how to draw these! Thank you!
Thankyou Lou. This makes so much more sense now ❤️

You're very welcome!
what an amazing video, i have a task ahead of me where i need to draw celtic knots as decorations and i was dreading the task due to the complexity of it all, but this video seems like a really good explanation on how to draw them. my artwork will have curves edges, hopefully I can find a way to curve the reference lattice.
Yes, you can bend the reference grid round a corner - like you do when drawing a celtic knot circle. I hope you have fun!
thank you!
Hi Lou! Just starting to experiment with Celtic Knots, your videos are the clearest I have found, thanks! I am wondering if there is a general principle of using a certain number (odd or even, does it matter?) of points in each direction, so that you end up with the right number of overlaps, corners, etc., or is there no "rule" and you can do any number in either direction (e.g. 4 x 4, or 4 x 5, or 4 x 6, or 5 x 5, 5 x 6, 5 x 7 and so on ?) I hope you understand my question! I can do a lot of experimenting to find out but if there is any rule one needs to follow, that's what I would like to know! Thanks so much!
Hi! I think some experimenting is a good idea but I think that you can do any number in any direction as long as what you’re counting (4x5 etc.) is the primary grid (and not the points in the middles of the boxes). I think there is a rule for how many ‘strands’ your knot contains based on how many you start with.

Do you have a formula for how many in the grid to avoid having orphaned strands that don't loop back around but get left just hanging at the edge? Or is that why you start with every other square in the grid?
Yes, that's why I start with every other square, then fill in around them.
Thank you!
