I'm starting my copywriting website thanks to your inspiration! The daunting part is going to be getting in touch with clients. Very nervous lol. I want to be professional as possible. So my question is, if a client is interested in my service after they've reviewed my website, what is the best way to handle the transaction? Should I draw up a formal contract/agreement to be signed? How do you handle payment? Through PayPal? Do you have a refund policy? Just trying to wrap my brain with all the tasks that goes into being an entrepreneur.
I work as a freelance writer. I have a Paypal business account and I invoice my clients through that platform. I generally schedule a phone call or meeting with a client to get the ball rolling, and the follow-up via email as a project moves forward. I almost always charge by the project: I estimate the number of hours I will put into a project and multiply that number by my hourly rate (I don't typically discuss that hourly rate with clients; that is just for my own calculations). I often invoice for a deposit and then invoice for the balance when the project is complete and approved. I don't know how other writers do it (although I am visiting this channel to broaden my horizons a bit and learn more about what works for other writers), but this system works well for me.

I include a satisfaction guarantee in the invoice: if a client is unhappy with the work and I cannot resolve the situation to their satisfaction, I will refund the deposit and then move on to other clients. That happens maybe once or twice a year at most. For some clients I draw up a contract if there are variable deliverables over time, if the work has multiple sub-projects, or there are other factors that make it necessary. I generally use boilerplate contracts that can be found online for free and modify them as needed. I'd estimate that 2/3 of my clients are invoiced per project with no contract. The PayPal business account platform has invoicing functions, revenue report functions and sales insights, etc., that are built in and make that side of it pretty streamlined

I worked as an editor of a newsletter for 10 years, but all the people that could be a great reference for me died at a meeting for the company in Tower 1 of the World Trade Center, except one, and she left town. I'm not sure if she's all right with being a reference now. I would need to write her and ask. A consistent work history has always been an issue with me. I'm not part of the Kennedy family; there have been times when for serious reasons, I was unemployed. * I refuse to call it "not gainfully employed.l" I think all employment is gainful.

Recently, an acquaintance recommended this food truck that makes really nice burgers. I went there to check it out and he was right, the burgers were fantastic. I found out the owner is a chef and that he's got a story to tell. I checked out their social media and found that they only have photos of their food. I told him that I would like to see if I can help them out and he agreed so I'm going to meet with him and his business partner to see how I can do that. Of course I'm not charging them as this is part of building my portfolio. I'm going to do what Alex recommended which is do some copywrite and content at the beginning. I do have a DSLR and drone (that I haven't used for a while). I can edit photos and videos as well but I'm not planning to be a one man army. I just need to do what I can in the beginning to launch and build a business.
I think best is to make a portfolio in a google doc, most people spent money and time on the website, without any experience. I hope that's correct Alex? Also can you tell some affordable copywriting courses?

How to make a copywriting profile. What are the things that I need to consider when doing this. I have no experience and am trying to get a head start, so what do I do exactly?

This could be a silly question but my confusion lies with how do you know what "offer" in a copy when you are writing for another company. So if its a get out of debt program you are trying to sell and you're writing your "Call to Action" section. How do you know what the company will be ok with offering? So a copy I read said "If you are not debt free in 2 years with our program we will give you a 100% refund." Did the copy writer know that ahead of time before writing that?
You’d need to get that information from your client. As a copywriter it’s not necessarily your job to come up with the offer. You can give recommendations based on your marketing experience, etc. but you need to get crystal clear with your client what they are offering - then you communicate in the most Compelling way.
I was a music journalist for 4 years, where I learned basic SEO and the concept of key words and phrases that resulted in some of my articles making front page results. However, now that I want to go into copywriting in a niche not related to music, would it still be relevant to include this info on my portfolio?

Hmm, I have a video on brand voice but not necessarily "personal branding" - it's a good idea for the future. But honestly just be yourself - allow your personality and sense of humor to shine through. Make you sure you talk about them and why you'd love to work for them, etc.

Nope! No degree is needed :) there are programs you can take if you can to excel your skills to the next level. But much of copywriting can be self-taught! Practice, practice, practice is the real KEY here.

This could be a silly question but my confusion lies with how do you know what "offer" in a copy when you are writing for another company. So if its a get out of debt program you are trying to sell and you're writing your "Call to Action" section. How do you know what the company will be ok with offering? So a copy I read said "If you are not debt free in 2 years with our program we will give you a 100% refund." Did the copy writer know that ahead of time before writing that?
You’d need to get that information from your client. As a copywriter it’s not necessarily your job to come up with the offer. You can give recommendations based on your marketing experience, etc. but you need to get crystal clear with your client what they are offering - then you communicate in the most

Of course! Your portfolio is to showcase your skills. All pieces don't have to fall within the same niche you are targeting. :)

Hmm, I have a video on brand voice but not necessarily "personal branding" - it's a good idea for the future. But honestly just be yourself - allow your personality and sense of humor to shine through. Make you sure you talk about them and why you'd love to work for them, etc.

Do you need a degree in English, marketing or communications? Do I need to know any software such as html or css or any other software? I want to change careers but I lack a degree. I'm about to turn 36 in a couple of months, am I too old for this?
Nope! No degree is needed :) there are programs you can take if you can to excel your skills to the next level. But much of copywriting can be self-taught! Practice, practice, practice is the real KEY here.
