The Backstory: Ashokan Farewell is one of THE MOST beautiful pieces for violin ever written, but our serious violinists hardly ever play it because it’s so plain. We asked Kurt Bestor to fancy it up for us in what we hope will be the new definitive version of this piece. The full symphonic treatment adds so much and the runs, pedal tone variations, and gorgeous key change really take Jay Ungar’s perfect melody to a new level. After three days of recording our Simple Gifts CD, we retreated to the big lodge pictured in the background of the video. All 100 students slept overnight in the lodge with the girls upstairs in bunks and all the guys downstairs on the floor with air mattresses. It was one of those classic orchestra bonding experiences. We played games and ate too much food. Random games of pool and ping-pong went nonstop and the out of tune piano in the front room was playing anything but classical music. The next morning Jenny and the video crew arrived but it was WAY too cold to film. The week before we had scouted this beautiful meadow with brightly colored autumn leaves, but in the meantime a storm had blown all the leaves off the trees and none of us wanted to leave the warmth of the cabin for very long. So we set up the chairs and stands as close to the cabin as we could and chose this picturesque field - which usually has volleyball standards on it. Believe it or not, we did the whole video in about three takes. We would run out of the cabin into the freezing air and record one take then retreat back to the big fireplace. It was one of our most memorable film shoots. The end result, with Sullivan Ballou’s letter added in, is simply moving. It’s education AND inspiration. That’s what our music is all about.

Special Thanks to the BYU Timp Lodge -- what a beautiful location! That's Mt. Timpanogos in the background. The setting was just magnificent. This location is not far from where we filmed our Jupiter video • Jupiter Theme / God Be...

sitting here in silence. Just so impressed; I've heard this tune many times over the past 34 years. Jenny this is the best version i've ever heard. Jay Ungar and Molly Mason must be so proud of you. Brings a tear. Congratulations to the Lyceum Philharmonic. incredible.
No words can be found to describe the feelings I get just listening to this lovely piece of music.
I’m from the Uk and english/welsh/Scottish and proud but man I feel American when I hear this. God bless those that fought for freedom against the British rule (I’m not self hating but colonialism was never ok) and against bigotry. My heart is so big feels like it’s going to explode. Always love the motto: home of the free and the brave-don’t ever lose that dear US X 🇺🇸 🇬🇧 🇮🇪 🏴 🏴 ❤️
We're certainly trying to hang on to this Democracy, though it sometimes feels like we might fall to fascism. Know that there are a great number of us who are standing against would-be "King Cheeto" (the Orange Menace) and the hate, bigotry, ignorance and lies he has tried to represent. We don't all espouse all of the corruption and evil that man has tried to spread and propogate. Most everyone I know is heartily against Trump and we're all planning to vote for Biden/Harris in November. Wish us luck and give us your prayers in November!!!!
This is absolutely a beautiful song and video. It is a true testament to the feelings of many military men and women who are separated from their families and loved ones, not knowing if they will return home. As a 30-year honorable retired United States Navy Veteran, I so love and appreciate this video. Well done on everyone's part!
Brilliant! Absolutely brilliant. The kind of music that moves grown men like me to tears. Thank you for this amazing performance.
Absolutely beautiful!!! My ancestor on my birth mother's side was from Ware County, Georgia, and fought with Clinch's Georgia Calvary, later designated as an artillery regiment. He was one of a set of 2 twin brothers. His twin brother did not survive the war, but he did. This mournful tune makes me think of him.....Jonathan David Hickox. RIP, Great great Grandpa. You did the best you could. We'll always remember you and what you did.
More than beautiful. Reaching the depth of the soul. His letter was beautifully composed.
Though my days in the Philharmonic are behind me, I'm glad I have all the audio/video recordings from my four years there to remind me of all the times I got to sit in the back of the rehearsal room and chill with some of my favorite section buddies I've ever had.
You did a lot more than just chill. We miss you. It's sorta amazing how much music we made together.
That is so beautiful Jenny and heart-wrenching at the same time, thank you.
Exquisite music, I cannot stop listening!
This is now my favorite performance of this piece, tho I have heard many. Absolutely inspiring and emotional! Thank you Jenny for this incredible gift!

Beautiful and moving. A sure testament of true love. And a wonderful song to accompany that tender testament. I love this. :)

Oh hey Peter
Totally miss you Matt!!!
Hi Matt!
Yess so cool!!
So cool!!
I miss my orchestra days... This is exquisite. Very well done... Even though this want my orchestra, it makes me homesick... If that makes sense.
I'm glad I haven't hung up my viola for good... In fact I'm studying luthiery... But my kids are so young (under 8) and my husband works nights... So we're as I can tinker with these beautiful instruments... Performing and rehearsal is probably a few years down the road.
This was great! :)
I loved being a part of this!! :D
even though it was a bit chilly. Some good shots of you too!
It appears to me that the orchestra we are hearing is not actually the orchestra in the video.
So grateful to be a part of this orchestra!
We're totally going to miss you! Some fantastic shots of you in this one.
