Fabulous song, one of my favourites from Toto, beautiful melody and great vibe. Once you hear it, it's in your head, I will now be humming or whistling it for the next while! Yes, guys, it is a masterpiece, and it certainly brings back memories of the 1980s for me, it was played everywhere, it actually came out in 1982. We would all get together and sing this. Whenever it would come on the radio, we would stop whatever we were doing (particularly in the campus bar) and everyone would raise up their voices together. Toto is one of the finest group of artists that gathered together. Oh..........and, the big glasses were super-fashionable back then. They're coming back in popularity, apparently.

Bobby Kimballs vocals are insane
In case you still hadn't heard/figured-out, there's two lead singers for this song: David Paich (the verses, lower part) and Bobby Kimball (the choruses, higher part). And it was Bobby Kimball that sang the lead on Rosanna ... and most of Toto's songs. His voice is pretty recognizable :)
You need to hear "Rosana". And since you ask: "Rosana" was actually written about Rosana Arquette. :)

Best song Toto ever did IMO. It also gave me chills, not the first time I heard it, but EVERY time I heard it for the first year or so. I don't know what makes it such an emotional experience, but it definitely is. When I was growing up, Africa was called The Dark Continent; it was one big mystery. Over the decades we have developed so many connections to it. In fact my younger daughter was there year before last, and my older daughter is part of a group raising money to build a hospital near where her sister was. Is that a coincidence? I don't think so. Your reactions were so exactly perfect for this song.

Hi Boys - the lead singer (David Paich) in this clip is usually the primary keyboarder, the main singer is later Steve Luckather (with guitar), the second lead singer is Bobby Kimball (the one with the brighter voice, sitting on the floor). My favorite is the gifted bass player Mike Porcaro - and what is actually true in almost every band - they say the bass player is always the most beautiful - so also here (in my opinion!)

99 is my all-time favorite of Toto.
I heard this song on the radio and went straight to the record store. I saw them with the Doobie Brothers and Ambrosis at Mountain Aire '80 at Angels Camp, California. I think Huey Lewis and the News was there too.
David Paich is an incredible and massively underrated songwriter. That said, Toto is an INCREDIBLE band! Al-around world-class musicians. Also massively underrated!

The song is about a Christian missionary. His fiance' is flying in to ask him to come back to England to get married but he has found his meaning in life by spreading the gospel and preaching the WORD in Africa. The line "Gonna take some time to do the things we never have" is telling her, I can't leave...there is still SO much left to do. It's about his passion for the LORD and the people he's teaching. It's also based on a true store that David Paich read in a Readers Digest.
Was a young kid when this first came out, and i thought it was ridiculous, now I absolutely love it.

Whatever year it came out, it won the "Song of the Year" award on whatever award ceremony does music. It was quite controversial . The hard core rockers felt it was too "produced". But what they did not know, if they bothered to listen to and know that the band is essentially composed of the best studio singers alive. It is miraculous.
Toto is so underrated in America. They used to fill stadiums in Europe, but I’ve seen them in the smallest venues. Where I was literally 3 feet away from them with my elbows on the stage. I’ve seen them LIVE at least 10 times. My husband and my song is Afraid of Love but I recommend I Will Remember from their Tambu album, it’s amazing ☺️

The best Toto song, and indeed, this is emotional beyond, I think it's the magic of the high tone in the chorus, it makes the love for Africa really hearable and thus feelable. I love how you love our music dear bros, it really gives me hope for the new generation, because if they at least can recognize quality it means the soul keeps on travelling.

Toto is my all-time favorite pop rock band. They have loads of great songs. And great chorus. "Holyanna", "Stop Loving You", "Mushanga", "Home of the Brave", "Could This Be Love", "Straight for the Heart", "I'll Be Over You" and many, many more.
Some of the members of Toto got "together" from their homes during quarantine in 2020 to do this song. It's fun to see the members again after so many years. Search TH-cam for "Toto - Africa 2020 Covid-19". The video was uploaded June 21, 2020.

I worked in a private school in Scotland and my two teacher friends had a thing about this song. Whenever we all came together we would sing it. Those guys were mad miss them so much.xx

I was fortunate enough to have met TOTO in 1979 back stage at a 3 day event at the L.A. Coliseum. They are one of most talented bands of all time. Each member is a master at their craft of producing great music. Steve’s guitar playing is among the best ever.
