      You get the grip eventually, it's really just your hands getting used to the motion at an incredibly precise level. I started learning to twirl a few years ago and now my hands do a lot of tiny stuff I don't even think about.

    I love this lesson, it is the first time someone takes the time to explain it step by step ... any movement that makes you look better at the moment of playing is acceptable and part of the show, imagine the rockers guitar without the poses , jumps and rare hand movements? So, for drummers, we have the stick tricks. Amen tricks haters...

    Absolutely correct way to teach this trick. I learned how to do this on my own when I saw Tommy Lee do it, but the way it's taught here is exactly the way you should do it. The ONLY issue I had was where it is in your hand when you strike the drums. After the roll, it ends in your hand in the same position, between the index and middle finger, which isn't a formal way to hold the stick.

  • @JakeHussDrums
    @JakeHussDrums 5 ปีที่แล้ว

    Ok, two things please:
    *•1* which package and or link will take me to your “stage presence” lessons on Drumeo
    And
    *•2* I have mastered this spinning technique with my right hand but now all I want to do is FLIP the sticks in my hands in between hits. So I can be constantly spinning the sticks fast or slow between strikes. Specifically I want to do the spin where it starts in the fulcrum, flips once and somehow at the height of the muller upstroke gets back into the fulcrum just in time to come down for a bounce of a drum or cymbal.
    I’ve seen professional drummers do it live, effortlessly.
    I always end up spinning too late or too early and or losing the rhythm/beat as well as obviously the sticks. It’s risky to spin the sticks in the middle of a song. I guess I have to finally set up a bucket of sticks next to each of my sets. I’ve been told that Vic Firth drum sticks(when mix-matched) become unbalanced and uneven to each other so... ahh I hope someone has some advice and some outside perspective.
    My outside perspective is telling me “Practice” “Litter the ceiling with stalactites of drumsticks” “use any and all drum sticks”
    Nothing better than seeing a drummer completely committed and making risky moves while drumming. If you’re just grasping the sticks for dear life it’s a feeling of unease. If you drop your sticks who cares just don’t miss the snares

    • @byerlys93
      @byerlys93 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Relative to the concern about matched-pair sticks...you’ll probably never tell the difference if you mix them up unless you spend a LOT of time working left/right balance on a practice pad. The “dead” sound helps you hear small differences. On a drum set, MOST people playing standard rock grooves will have an extremely dominant hand...we often play at least a 4:1 ratio of hi-hat or ride to each snare hit. That hand dominance usually overpowers any small difference made by slightly mismatched sticks. To verify, get a pair of sticks and a practice pad and alternate 8 on each hand and listen closely...generally you’ll hear a small difference left-to-right. Now switch sticks between hands and repeat. If the difference in sounds moved, you can blame the sticks. If not, it’s probably your hands. It’s not always easy to distinguish between small pitch and volume differences.
      This is one reason that I encourage open-hand drumming as part of your drumming arsenal...let your weaker hand ride for a while, balance things out, and open up some new sticking patterns...but I still think you’ll find mismatched sticks to not be a major problem. Vic Firth (and most others) are fairly consistent in their manufacturing processes even before the pitch-pairing.

      @@ChipRitter Hello Chip, is the stick supposed to stay down locked inside the cruck of the fingers? Hurts the sides of my knuckles badly. Is this supposed to hurt from the beginning. I can do it as long as I move the stick towards the middle of my fingers. Appreciate your response.

    the spinning isn’t so hard as the transitioning from stick grip to twirl position and back and forth. I wish he would mention that part.

    Good Lesson ! I wouldn’t know a drum from a bum - but my 3 pair of sticks delivered for 9 bucks arrived today and I’m going to find out how to do this with a pair of sticks in each car and at my desk - WTF !
