Hard landing due to fog means flew into a mountain when visual contact was lost. Cell signal means one phone survived the impact.

Helicopters may have high-tech equipment, but it seems to me that there is less reaction time. They are flying a lot closer to the ground. The danger would be increased flying in mountains.
