Marine Nam Vet, Chu Lai 68-69 1st MAW MAG 12. I may not have wanted to go but I didn’t run to Canada or have imaginary ailments to keep me out. To my Nam Vet Brothers and Sisters…WELCOME HOME. To the ones who didn’t make it back…SALUTE.
That one veteran blaming himself for the casualties. That's just heart-breaking. Carrying that guilt all these years, that's just... I hope someone helps him see that it wasn't his fault. That he did his duty to his country, that there was nothing he could've done.
So you don't feel guilty for invading our country and leaving us with so many casualties. You and we are two far away countries, why do you bring death here? In addition to the casualties and losses in the past during the war, do you know that now that our country of Vietnam is at peace, there are still many veterans, martyrs, mothers who have lost their children, lost their husbands, The son was born without knowing what his father looked like. Furthermore, in our land and water resources, our people still have to bear the consequences of Agent Orange. We hope you will learn about this poison and the consequences your country leaves behind. At that time we were only acting to protect our homeland. Thank you for reading

A former colleague of mine (From A Swedish perspective), retired, now deceased. Immigrated to Australia in the 50s, was shipped to Vietnam some years later (Yes, he was naturalized and had certain skills that were deemed necessary) He did not want to go into too much detail, but he worked in some sketchy places. 40 years my peer. Great guy. A great aviation mechanic. God bless you up there, Roland.
My Dad served 4 tours in Vietnam with the 101st Airborne. He wasn't killed over there but he died later from the effects of the war. He's been gone since 1979 and I still miss him every day.
I was a Sgt E-5 during the latter part of Vietnam. I was ready willing & able to go & do my part but never got the call. To this day I feel guilty that my brothers fought & died in that far off land and there I was safe & sound back in the states. Guess I’ll never really get over it.
Do not beat yourself up over it, ok? I know that's easy to say, but I a SO glad you didn't have to/get to go. You didn't need to be there. I'm a lucky one who came home with only a bullet wound, Tinnitus and PTSD. You didn't need to be exposed to the daily reminders of that place. '69-70
I served with Delta Company, 1st Bn 3rd Marines in Vietnam, arriving in Country in December 1966. I flew to Khe Sanh the day after I arrived in country to join the Battalion, which had been up there since October 1966. Though, I was trained as an 0311 (rifleman), I was put into a machine gun squad (0331). I was 18 years old. In April 1967 we became part of SLF (Special Landing Force) Alpha, and commenced combat operations up and down the coast of “I” Corps, Generally in support of other battalions, or because a Marine unit was in trouble, see Operation Buffalo. We did 3-4 combat operations per month. Ground combat is not an easy experience or one that you ever forget, but what has made it worse has been the way I was treated when I came home. At best I was ignored, at worst I was vilified for the war and my participation in it. The comments I would receive from those who were never there; whether from Marine officers who never served in Vietnam (I've had my loyalty questioned because I'm a Vietnam combat veteran), college professors (I've had my grades lowered when I was in college because professors didn't like what I wrote or said in class about my experience), friends, colleagues, or strangers. Many of the comments I have heard over the years have been vicious in nature. Some comments were innocent, but still cut me deeply. I felt, and still do, that I had become a stranger in a strange land. Home was no longer home. It seemed to me as if everyone in the country decided to rid themselves of the collective guilt over Vietnam by blaming the Vietnam veteran for what happened, including the military. My friends and I didn't run the war, we just fought it. We weren't the ones who made the decision to go to war, but we bore the brunt of the dissatisfaction that the American public had for it. I wasn't even old enough to vote when I got out of the Marines at 20 years of age.
