It's not turbo lag. The car is designed to have an "NA" type of power delivery, and thus does not start making boost until about mid-way into the RPMs. When I first got mine and was in the break in period I was almost never making boost. Also, as mentioned already, it's delayed because you're manual-shifting the auto. If you want to shift gears, get the 6MT (I did). I know you were driving test cars in this video, but you should have just let the transmission do its thing. This is addressed in countless other reviews. Unlike many people with an opinion on TH-cam, I actually own this car, so take that for what it's worth.
Once again, some testers use the paddle shifts to try and gauge the car. Please take note of: 1) Dave Leone says about the 8 speed auto and how fast it shifts 2) Randy Pobst (Head-2-Head) comparison, he left the car in Drive and allowed the transmission to do what it was built to do, Shift It Self!
I own this car, with a manual transmission. There's no turbo lag, if you learn how to drive it. You guys should stop trying to outsmart the car and let it shift itself. It has the most confidence inspiring handling and stability of any car I've driven, and that's a pretty big number. Today, while rowing it hard, it chirped a wheel going into 4th. This car is amazing.
Boom, this guy gets it! It took some time to really get to know the car, especially messing around with the Performance Traction Management system: put car in Track mode (wait a second or two) --> press the Traction Control button twice, which will open up the PTM menu. I usually select the third option of Sport 1. My daily driver for the last 2.5 years has been a 2017 ATS-V with the 8-sp auto transmission, and I don't run into these low power issues unless I'm messing around with the paddles. If you have the trans in auto mode, start getting aggressive with the throttle, especially on a turn, and the transmission 'transforms' into something completely different--up shifts are super quick and if you brake to slow or are coming to a stop, the trans will perfectly downshift into the proper gear w/ rev matching). So if I am just cruising anywhere between 25-70 mph, all I have to do is quickly blip the throttle almost all the way down in a split second...then the trans gets into the right gear for aggressive driving.
Absolutely badass car! Very underrated. Took engineers 5 years to engineer that chassis which is phenomenal. I currently have a 2015 ats 3.6 premium with performance pkg and after 5 years still get the"wow" factor everytime I drive my ats!!! Trading in for a V with low mileage early 2021
I wonder how much of the power delivery feel and lag between the ATS and the C63 is due to the engine it self. With the C63 being a V8 it would have more grunt that could hide some of the lag vs the V6 of the ATS-V. Like you said I am not a fan of the Cue system currently in use by Caddy, I still prefer the older system in the previous CTS-V. I hope they ditch it soon. As far as the driver aids go was everything turn off? I know with the CTS-V its got several layers. First layer traction control turns off completely. Second layer stabilitrack is loosed to allow more slip angle before it kicks in. Then if you hold the button down for 7 seconds everything is turned completely off and some lights on the dash will come one showings its fully off. I hope GM hasn't gone the route of MBZ and not allowed people to fully turn stuff off. Prior AMG models would say all aids are off but when you push the car and slide around they kick right back in.
+aszrael1266 main difference is that the 4.0l TT V8 has the turbos within the V of the cylinders giving faster spooling of the turbos versus the traditional setup in the ATS V
+aszrael1266 you still can turn everything off and drift the car the hell like you want even with the automatic, you also can upshift while doing wheelspin with the automatic and get instant response of power and more smoke wich is very cool lol
You're right; there are several layers. I highly doubt they turned it totally off. Simply selecting "Track Mode" does not turn it all the way off. There are five more settings within track mode. The fifth setting is the only one that totally turns it off. It took me a while to figure that out, and probably wouldn't have if I didn't ask about it on a forum. I personally don't use that setting, though, and it would be foolish to do so on a public road as the majority of drivers don't possess the skill needed to "outdrive" the car's stability systems.
Both of you were doing it wrong - with the 8L90 8-speed auto, you leave it in automatic mode, you don't use the paddles to shift it manually. It's much better in auto mode. And also - 6-speed manual is the standard transmission anyway, which would have solved every complaint you had about power delivery.
offten this is the first time a driver is testing a car. So they haven't settled in to the vehicle yet. sometimes turbo that are instantly on boost limit high end power or cause unforseen street driving problems. I'd buy a ATS-V in a minute..
+brandon chism - Sorry about any confusion there. We're driving the white ATS-V. But at the end, Paul talks about preferring the CTS-V, so the ending shot is looking out the front windshield of the ATS-V we are driving, and seeing the CTS-V come back to park beside us. Hope that clarifies. Thanks for watching!
I have just booked one, price vs performance why I went to it, as per the hot lap of Motor Trend, it perform better than M3 and C63 s. the price in UAE for M3 and the C63 s is way high, more than 15k dollars than ATS-V.
I guess I am the weird one where Turbo Lag doesn't bother me I actually kind of have enjoy it. But I have been driving turbo cars since 2004 with my Volvo S70 glt and now my Saab 9-5 Aero
because you drive your cars, not doing 2 laps while crying and then went back to their toyota echo turning their tape cassette on and still crying how bad the cue is
Juste Dan To be fair the Everyday Driver guys aren't those type of auto journalist. Todd with his FRS / Porsche Cayenne, and Paul which his previous ride being a Cayman S and current Jeep Grand Cherokee.
Perhaps if they went supercharged (like the CTS-V) some of the throttle-response issues would have been solved. Either way, a great car; saw/sat in a beautiful blue sedan version two weeks ago...daddy like!
I heard they actually tested an Cadillac ATS with a supercharger and twin turbos and they were able to reach 200 and 25 miles an hour with no problem and a 0 to 60 in 2.6 seconds if that's true oh my god they should build it
ATS-V has a good chassis, just like the new Jaguar XE, but suffers from less refined power delivery and gearbox, two very important areas of a sports car and how it feels. The M3/4 might not have as good a chassis but have a superior engine and gearbox and the interaction between them. Both the Caddy and Jag are very good cars but don't quite make it to the top.
+Fast Er No, the problem was that they were trying to shift it manually when the 8L90 runs much better when you leave it in auto mode. And it also has a 6-speed Tremec manual which is excellent. The Jag XE is not in the ATS-V's league, at all.
Minus the CUE system the interior is very nice. I have zero complaints (other than the touch interface for HVAC controls) with my ATS-V. Don't let the fanboys who've never driven one (or even been in one, for that matter) tell you any differently.
That touch center console that it has is literally what would prevent me from buying one if I wanted one, it is indeed THAT bad. Never thought I'd say that.
+brann1999 These guys were both using the paddle-shifters, it looked like. GM says to just leave it in D (Drive) and it will shift much better (and faster) than using the paddle shifters…even on the track. The R&T video where they are testing for Car of the Year, and indeed other videos I've watched say the auto transmission left in Drive is actually better than the manual. I'm just basing this on my watching of videos here on youtube. I'm not nearly wealthy enough to afford an ATS-V or any of it's competitors :(
no the BMW can't hold a candle to it the Cadillac absolutely blows it away it's not even close even if you put a jet motor in the fucking BMW the Cadillac totally out performs it in the terms it's just probably one of the best handling cars in the world I mean supercar status handling it's been proven to beat the Porsche
+daison96 It's not that bad, but it doesn't rev as quick as a BMW 335i/340i and even the N/A 3.6 in the Camaro and ATS actually can hit redline quicker. Also, it sounds very good when you remove the cats from it. The GM Dealer near me has his exhaust set up perfect! It sounds better than the new V6 Camaro, but that's not saying very much.
Nik Brudar The M3/M4 do destroy it in performance, but I can tell you that the ATS-V will be the better car on the used market in 3 years. More reliable, cheaper parts and the aftermarket will be great as well.
DirtDude117 how can a car turn from being worse into being better of another one in three years? It might be cheaper, possibly more reliable, but that does not make it a better car.
+daison96 i tried it few times and there is more lag in a n/a corvette than this car, its not turbo lag its throttle lag intentionnally there to save amateurs that floors the gas while exiting a curve then lose control and even crash the car like we have seen alot with older gen cts-v's, cadillac done alot of small things to save their drivers and their cars, most of our consumers track their cars twice a year or less so losing a bit of performance for smoothness and linear push is really not an issue for anybody...

Guys you get the best performance when keep it automatic mode where it shifts a lot faster. It's well known

Post lap times to credential/validate your track reviews plz. Love the road reviews and the channel!

what a great looking hyper blue STI in the background towards the end 😅

did u use the secret set of settings? They say it takes away all the lag
There is track mode and then there is a way to get to a secret set of settings I have the ATS V I tried it and it really eliminated almost all the lag
Can you guys clarify which one you're driving? The description says ATS V but the rear end shot just as the video is ending is of a CTS V.
+brandon chism - Sorry about any confusion there. We're driving the white ATS-V. +EverydayDriver thanks so much for clearing that up.
they're driving the Ats v but it shows the cts v at the end of the video they're testing other cars while they were shooting the video
I'd like to see you guys review the 2016 Camaro V6 please. Thanks

*SALOON WARNING* might have been nice,.....and film101 - any establishing shot of the car EXTERIOR?
I know everything seems to be going to turbos today, but man do I hate the idea of that lag. Too bad.
You guys are fantastic....just wish there were more videos
I heard they actually tested an Cadillac ATS with a supercharger and twin turbos and they were able to reach 200 and 25 miles an hour with no problem and a 0 to 60 in 2.6 seconds if that's true oh my god they should build it

Hot stuff. I like where Cadillac is going with their image, but they need to work on the interiors.

Please review the 3-cylinder Ford Fiesta 1.0 or Focus 1.0 ecoboost
.
That touch center console that it has is literally what would prevent me from buying one if I wanted one, it is indeed THAT bad. Never thought I'd say that.
Wonder how much better it'd be with the manual transmission.
+brann1999 According to those at TheHooniverse the manual is so so much better the only downfall is the CUE system
Yeah, just seems like it'd be easier to keep the turbos on boil when you're the one controlling the gears and not a computer.
+brann1999 These guys were both using the paddle-shifters, it looked like. GM says to just leave it in D (Drive) and it will shift much better (and faster) than using the paddle shifters…even on the track.

Me, neither, but I wouldn't be a customer for an automatic-equipped performance car anyway.
please do a video on the bmw m4 u guys keep comparing it to the Mercedes but I think the BMW is the best one of them all
no the BMW can't hold a candle to it the Cadillac absolutely blows it away it's not even close even if you put a jet motor in the fucking BMW the Cadillac totally out performs it in the terms it's just probably one of the best handling cars in the world I mean supercar status handling it's been proven to beat the Porsche
caharrrr impressionnnnsss...tom brokaw....pls talk like its 2016
Can you get it with a stick?
I think so
yes
you can turn off traction control.............its easy...then you don't have any nannies working....
Still relegated to Middle America.

Damn shame about the turbo lag for what this car costs.
+daison96 It's not that bad, but it doesn't rev as quick as a BMW 335i/340i and even the N/A 3.6 in the Camaro and ATS actually can hit redline quicker.

+DirtDude117 German competitors destroy this car as of yet. Cadillac has stepped their game up big time, though.
