I found the automatic transmission particularly interesting. It would start out in a fluid drive coupled mod. At ~ 40 MPH, it would go into direct drive. I've been on a few when the bus slowed down, and the mod was supposed to switch back to fluid drive, it wouldn't and the engine stalled. Another bus would have to pick up the load of passengers. I actually saw a bus that had a broken shifting lever. First time seeing that. The older model GM busses ( called the bug eyes) were really worn out by the time that these models were issued. The new ones were quite impressive. Quieter, smoother ride and well just better built.

Good thing it didn't crank faster and start in the begining it would have ran away with the injectors fully stuck open

As kid growing up in Boston in the 1960's I would ride these Buses and Mack Buses with standard transmission that were in service to the MBTA like everything else old school is better.

As a kid growing up in the 1970’s the last of these were still operating, with RTD, and I just loved riding these over the newer models because of the engine sound and the shifting and if the driver was good he would do fast takeoffs and get the rpms up so that Detroit would scream loud! Back when riding the bus was not just cool but fun! Yes, I agree, old school is better.

I was born in 1946 and growing up down here in Virginia we had the GM coaches. It was interesting the door side of the front's windshield was cut diagonal at the top. We also had 1947 Mack buses and ACF-Brill buses. 1947 we got 20 Macks and 33 Brill's. Buses from the 30's and early 40's were replaced by the GM coaches in the 1950's. In the late 60's the Macks and ACF-Brills were replaced with GM fishbowl coaches. In the 1970's Flexible coaches replaced the old look GMs.

Lazy. should have pulled the injectors... freed them up... and reinstalled them instead of using a pry bar and using the rack for leverage. Also have a METAL flap to cover the intake in case of runaway. Call Bus Grease Monkey.
