I like this because this is telling a story, and it comes from the depth and shows angst of a woman who has gone through a hard heart-break. Of course, men can relate to that happening to them, as well. She also says she now understand where beauty lives. She's beginning to mature and can see different possibilities that the younger version couldn't see, and that she is rising above it all. I love this song, too. I could agree that it's Madonna's best song.
I also thought this look with the shoulder length honey blonde hair brought out her natural beauty more than the short, white blonde hair. She's wearing the same look in the Material girl video, plus dressed in formal wear, and she looks stunning. Wish they'd picked a better dress for her to wear for this video, but the video was reflecting the theme of the movie, so I get it.

This is one of those songs that has cross generational appeal, I know from experience. I grew up on this song because my mom had it on cassette. I have it on my driving playlist and now my 16 year old son is nuts about it. Great tune!
I am privilege to have grown up in the times and likes of Madonna, Laura Branigan, Cindy Lauper when music was pure and good and authentic. This is one of Madonna's crowning jewels in her illustrious cabinet of wonderful, wonderful timeless classics. The pure unadulterated simplicity of 'Live to Tell' and the deep emotions it evokes goes on to say this one song is Madonnas heart and soul poured out in intricate melodies, hauntingly beautiful and heart warming!
@@kuuttinen I wish I could go back as well. The eighties and 90's were the greatest for music and movies. Great guitarists and voices, Terminator, Rocky, Rambo, they don't do 80's lifestyle anymore. All of these women influenced me musically! I had the True Blue CD in my walkman at all times :) I was unfortunately born way too late, but luckily my parents were in high school in the 80s and I inherited their music tastes instantly
Fun fact, her “True Blue” album still remains one of the best selling albums of all time. Three different songs from the album were number one hits on the US Billboard 100: “Live to Tell”, “Papa Don’t Preach”, and “Open Your Heart”. If TH-cam existed in the 80’s a lot of her songs would’ve had hundreds of millions of views! And Madonna is still awesome in 2024 :)
@@felipeserrato6271 I didn’t exist during that era lol. But luckily I had a mother who grew up in the 80’s; so as I grew up, 80’s music in the house and the car was extremely common! I danced this marvelous song with my first love, in 1987 ... It was magic, slowly moving, holding her in my arms ... never thought that moment she was starting to letting me go in her heart. I´m 55 now but every time I hear this song, my hearts flies to her, thankful for the gift of being loved, at least for a while.

"Live to Tell" is the story of my life. I have listened to it a thousand times, and I have yet to get through it without crying. I know she lived it! So did I, and likely many others. To me, this is Madonna's best song, period. The melody, music arrangements, accurate music transitions, but especially by the amazing job Madonna did with the lyrics. Amazing songwriter.
I don't know who was behind this era of her music - but it was some truly classic melodies. Even if the pop prior and pop later of her music falls off, the songs she made in this part of her career will forever be timeless.
"It was kind of inspired by the movie and family secrets (At Close Range) and the things that make you who you are, but you don't necessarily want to share” - Madonna
I'm a Rock guy through and through, but the sheer talent of Madonna never ceases to amaze me. Detroit's finest is kind of the female equivalent to Elvis. She is beyond legendary. I remember seeing the movie, At Close Range, and this song just gripped me, it still does. An accomplished drummer and guitar player as well as a great songwriter. And, oh, that voice.
I never forgot a time when madonna was promoting the album american life on MTV... and the song has a kind of "rap" in the middle, which talks about prejudice and illusion, etc... At the end of the song someone from the audience compared her to the eminem, and she replied...."I was born in detroit first...."
This movie, At Close Range, is based on a true story. Madonna and Sean Penn were married when this movie was released. Michigan proud for sure, Madonna 💕
Ric. Same man, at the time listening to Metallica. Maiden and the usual suspects, Madonnas True Blue got spun a lot. Still sounds fresh today. Today's popular music has nothing on this. This song stomps on anything these modern hacks produce.

A few years ago I almost got in a fight with someone who said that Lady Gaga was better than Madonna. I am hard rock fan but I really like a few songs by Madonna and this one is my favorite by her. As for Gaga, it isn't close. Don't like a single song by her.
I would say that Lady Gaga is hugely influenced by some of the great songstresses of the 70s and 80s,but has shown a keenness to experiment, something that is far too scarce in mainstream music nowadays, and an appreciation of the art of music. She hasn't produced anything I know of to hold a candle to this yet, though.
As a songwriter, this is the greatest song she ever wrote. And I believe she wrote this is minutes. People don’t give her enough credit. She’s an excellent songwriter.
This song brings back memories. I was 8 years old in hospital after having open heart surgery and i would play this song over and over. The true blue album is a very special album to me and live to tell is a special song. Madonna is just the best ❤

You’re sweet . I’m around your age . My ex looks like Madonna in this video . She is half my age . So this song haunts me . My parents didn’t get along either even on vacation but I think we both turned out ok even though it’s so sad when your parents aren’t close
Same age - same thoughts ❤️
This is one of those songs that has cross generational appeal, I know from experience. I grew up on this song because my mom had it on cassette. I have it on my driving playlist and now my 16 year old son is nuts about it. Great tune!
Same with me but I am twelve
Probably would have never heard this song again if it wasn't for TH-cam. Great things from the past 😊
It's great that kids are gettiing into the music us Adults are into. Variety is the spice of life!
I don't care what anyone says, I think Madonna has a beautiful singing voice. Wonderful vocalist.
I agree. If I had the chance to go back to the 80's I would. I miss the 80's/90's every day.
@@kuuttinen I wish I could go back as well. The eighties and 90's were the greatest for music and movies. Great guitarists and voices, Terminator, Rocky, Rambo, they don't do 80's lifestyle anymore. It's all gone. The music and actors of today are no comparison to the 80's. These people don't know what they missed out on.
All of these women influenced me musically! I had the True Blue CD in my walkman at all times :) I was unfortunately born way too late, but luckily my parents were in high school in the 80s and I inherited their music tastes instantly
Same ❤
Eu também, mas para nossos pais a música não era pura e nem Madonna😅😅😅❤❤❤

MTV was there and it generated a lot of big hits.

I roller skated to this song with my first love and I'm 47, which means we were only 11 years old. And we were together from the first day of 6th grade until the last day! Then we both suddenly realized we hated each other...
@dennytango Totally agree. It stays with you forever.
Thanks for that, this song and Crazy For You always remind me of driving home from my highschool girlfriend on empty roads listening to late night radio full of those first love feelings.
Where is she is now
This, along with Evita, is some of the finest Madonna, in my opinion. I'm not a huge fan of hers, but I respect her talent and accomplishments.
"Live to Tell" is the story of my life. I have listened to it a thousand times, and I have yet to get through it without crying. I know she lived it! So did I, and likely many others. But only she had the talent of soul to write it down, and set it to music in this deeply touching way. What an artist she is! I love her!

Madonna was one of my favourite artists in the 80's. I was in high school when New Wave music became popular. I love this song ❤

Madonna in the 80s was so awesome. She had so many great songs out then. This song is so beautiful ❤️❤️

This song and Take A Bow. My two favorites.

Live To Tell, Oh Father, The Power of Goodbye, and I'll Remember (from the movie "With Honors", starring Brendan Fraser) are _my_ favorites.
I don't know who was behind this era of her music - but it was some truly classic melodies.
Even if the pop prior and pop later of her music falls off, the songs she made in this part of her career will forever be timeless.

Madonna has written like 50 amazing ballads. #ballad_queen
This is a ballad but also has a BPM of 112. Madonna ballads always have high energy.
I think it's her best but Patrick Leonard wrote this song, most of the songs she has are written for her, not by her.
I’ve always liked this song. Now I’m one month shy of 55 and I think I love this song. Madonna never looked this beautiful right?
Great movie true story very sad though. Like you I loved these days. Madonna is Italian
Madonna is beautiful inside and out always has been ❤❤❤
My all time favorite Madonna song. She sings this song with so much feeling and I really enjoy hearing her voice in the lower vocal range.
@@andrewmorrow6982 -- Good ears, Andrew. No matter what type of music, you still have to put notes together and make a melody.
@@ricenglish4556 Absolutely Ric. And at a time when some of these current artists sample. Borrow and downright steal other artists melody lines. Bass lines and whatever else they could take some cues from Madonna and learn to write their own catchy hooks.
The breakdown in the middle where it goes silent and she starts with "If I ran away..." gives me chills. Underrated masterpiece!
My fave part of the song!! ❤️
Best part of the song
When I had my first job and bought a walkman (well, a General Electric knockoff), True Blue was one of the first cassettes I bought (at Kmart); the cassette itself was made of clear plastic, and oddly enough, smelled like grapes.

Well written, Dayna...from one 'hauntingly beautiful' to another. Yeah...I had ta go there. 😏

I dont know if would apear another madonna now aday, man she was themost spectacular singer I can remember.
Still she is able to comp..music yeah real music not trash like now aday we hear. I just lisent her musical poem and go back in times just to remember such nostalgia,,it was fantastic or it is fabuluos to remember
You are not the only one to think this.
This is one of the amazing ones.
Live to Tell is part of her “True Blue” album, which was, when it came out, her best-selling album (her best-selling album is 1990’s “The Immaculate Collection”, which is basically a greatest hits album).
In general, her True Blue album got big praise, one of reasons being Madonna’s voice and how it was stronger and less bubbly than it was before. In this era, Madonna showcases her versatility so well, and that’s one of the reasons why I personally think this was Madonna’s “height” if you will :D
Agree with you totally this is her coming to the fore of her talent.
