Dc will have movies that have their own style and tone which gives them a unique advantage and they have directors who have proven to be good in their respective work
For sure! My question in this segment was more just how these films May interconnect given that Creature Commandos is hinting at a lot of the wider DCU and Rick Flag St., for example, will be showing up in the first 3 projects (all Gunn projects)
James Gunn also said the dcu won’t have a overarching story with huge crossover it be more self contained with a few references and connections here and there. And I honestly think it the best move right now since there are literally just starting off with their new universe. It also a better idea than what the old dceu did where they try to play caught up to marvel now they’re taking their time and I think it’s gonna show for the better, happy to live in a era where marvel and dc are doing better 🕷️🦇🔥
I totally agree that I want the DCU and the MCU to both be thriving!! And I would have believed that from Gunn… except Creature Commandos is only 3 episodes (an hour of TV) in and not to spoil anything, but there are TONS of hints towards an overarching story. It remains to be seen - who knows where we go from here!
I don’t think that related to A over arching story. That vision is A what if, the events in Creature Comandos isn’t stop, not what possible going to happen in the future of the DCU.
I think the difference might be that at least for the moment the DC universe isn't building to anything, which is a good thing From the outset Marvel was building towards thanos and the infinity gauntlet story line, they didn't know how long it would take but they were going that direction What I like about Gunns approach is that he is going about it (it seems at least) how comics go about it 'usually'. Just one off stories that isn't building to a massive DC crisis event. It just seems like Gunn is open for whatever stories people want to tell about DC characters that all just happen to share the same universe, like a lot of comics and Gunn definitely comes from the old school way of writing comics Also he is leaning on a lot of comic book professionals like Tom King which is far more generous than Marvel has been outside of scumbag Joph Loeb Just let the universe be its own thing, if a writer comes along and says they want to write a Ted Kord Blue beetle/booster gold team up movie and the script is good, then why deny them just because it doesnt progress the overall story of the DC universe That's marvels problem at the moment, everything is FOR something that's why people are tuning out because there is so much content and a lot of is FOR their overarching plot DC doesn't need tk be that. Most comic book readers don't read monthly comics of every Marvel or DC book. They have a few or 1 they read consistently, maybe the DC universe can be like that
I hear you! Here’s what I’m hoping doesn’t happen though - let’s say we love Superman - that’s great! But then, because of the slate of films, we don’t see Superman 2 or Superman as a character show up for 5 years because of the way it’s going. To me, it’s less about making an Avengers-style shared story and more of - “how long is it going to take to see my favorite characters again?” And again - Marvel is guilty too (where’s Shang-Chi??) so it’s not a comment on either one in particular and more a general observation - thanks for sharing!
One thing we can’t do is forget just how unorganized and unruly the DCEU was from the beginning. The new DCU structure seems to be more of a response to the mismanagement of the DCEU than the MCU
Ever since James Gunn took over, I have noticed how a lot of people are either completely behind him or completely dismissive of him and it’s nice to see you take the time to analyze the situation and make arguments about what he’s doing. It’s a really tough time right now because of all the drama I have been hearing about but I really enjoy discussions like this one because it’s good to hear someone talk about the pros and cons that can come out of this situation. I like that he is planning to do more separate projects and build up different storylines. I just hope that the characters I really love get to be part of the DCU very soon and that they are portrayed in just the right way. This was a fantastic analysis video!
Thank you so much for the kind words, it means so much!! I agree, I think all we can hope for is that the approach he takes will bring out the best in the DC characters, movies, and shows!
Marvel's tight schedule may have worked for Phase 1, but I'd argue that was very much lightning in a bottle, look at how many cinematic universes failed because they rushed to get a timeline in place instead of focusing on the groundwork. The DCEU, Universal's Dark Universe, and both of Sony's attempts for create a Spider-man universe all come to mind.
For sure, though it’s hard to say that 11 years (2008-2019) was just lightning in a bottle. I think it’s not just the shared and tight schedule that makes the other examples you listed the same as the MCU - in my mind it’s the vision and brilliance of Kevin Feige that these other universe didn’t have an equivalent to
James Gunn said in the announcement of Gods and Monsters that Lanterns would be a space police show where they uncover something that will lead to the bigger unfolding plot on the DCU, and they are working on a 8-10 year plan.
For sure - my point here is more just wondering how much of an 8-10 year plan you can have if you’re making sure every script is to your liking first - we’ll have to see!
On that comment on 'creativity born from restraints' I'm just gonna point out that a few directors got fired because their creative vision didn't match what Feige wanted. Look at Edgar Wright with Ant Man and he isn't the only director I'm not saying creativity can't come from those restraints buts let's just say the MCUd creativity was always shackled by what Feige wanted, if you got too creative for the brand, you were out
I’d say there’s a middle ground here - I take your point, I wasn’t trying to make a generalization at all. I was more pointing out the fact that being restrained doesn’t always equate to bad product and being creatively free doesn’t equate to good product all the time! So I think for me, it’s not an indictment on either Feige or Gunn and more curiosity of what Gunn can do is all :)
Marvel is kind of established, its more now can they maintain. None of what James Gunn has on the slate for the new DCU looks that accessable to people who just want to see basic super hero stories aside from maybe Superman and Batman who have been done multiple times now. Personally, I'm not crazy about Creature Commandos which is yet another team of anti-heroes forced to do the "right" thing. I've seen that before in multiple iterations of Task Force X (I can't write the team's other name lest TH-cam delete my entire comment!).
Yeah I hear you - I think it comes down to execution personally. I’m also not a huge fan of Creatirr Commandos but I don’t know if it has much to do with the characters’ obscurity and more to do with the similarities to Gunn’s other projects, like you said, but I’m hoping all the DCU projects are amazing!!
Also to be fair on some of the movies James Gunn has planned. He said that we won’t start the movie until we have scripts that are ready but with brave and the bold I don’t think the finished script being the reason why they haven’t started yet but rather he’s waiting on Matt reeves Batman 2 to finish because let’s be real, if there wasn’t a Matt reeves Batman trilogy the dcu Batman brave and the bold would’ve very likely had that 2026 release date
Maybe - I don’t know though. We had Ben Afflexk, Robert Pattinson, and Michael Keaton on screen as Batman without about a year of each other - this could be the reason but who knows!
I never had issues what Gunn doing. He always open on creator to do on DC without any interfering with their project. Gunn let Todd Phillips finish and release Joker 2 even it didn't live up to the first movie but Gunn let him do whatever he want . Same goes to Matt Reeves they let Him continue working on his Batman Cinematic Universe.
@AccessBlockbusters we see Gunn didn't used any of New 52 Storyline but only from Post Crisis version and well known and famous arc for DC Universe like All Star Superman and Supergirl Woman of Tomorrow..and I see Gunn wanted to Explore Any potential DC story with Different tone depends on what projects they making
As far as I understand, Gunn plans on the DCU to be driven by worldbuilding instead of story driven. This does NOT mean that there won’t be an overarching story, it all still happens in one universe, meaning that stuff affects each other, but Gunn wants to tell be able to tell various stories that don’t necessarily connect to the overarching story, like maybe a Batman vs Clayface or Under the Red hood. Not necessarily connected to let‘s say Wonder Woman. But it could be, because WW is in the same universe. So focus on worldbuilding and the overarching story becomes secondary.
Right, this is pretty much my understanding as well. Really my curiosity stems from the scenario that I think will inevitably arise (as it does with any franchise) when a script that does bring characters together and affects other projects (even if it’s not affecting the entire universe) is not up to Gunn’s standards. But we’ll just have to see!
@ I guess that Gunn and Safran are planning ahead a lot. Giving the scripts time in development. I mean Brave and the bold has been announced with all the other projects and we have heard nothing about that. I think the planning ahead makes it less likely that a project gets delayed too much and messes up the timeline
For sure. There’s a lot we don’t know. I find it interesting looking back on his initial slate projects like Clayface, Bane + Deathstroke, and Sgt. Rock have moved ahead of projects like Brave and the Bold. Hopefully you’re right!
Keep everything separate. U can still have the connective universe but still have everything separate. For example let’s say gunn releases brave and the bold and than eventually we get a justice league movie and than after that we get 2 more dcu batman movies. U as an audience should not be forced to watch justice league to understand dcu batman 2 and 3. Justice league is justice league meaning u don’t need any solo story before that to watch and understand all 3 league movies. Kinda like the new 52 dcamu. All 4 batman movies can be watched without prior movies before that.
That would be good - though I think we also underestimate just how hard that is to accomplish. I think that’s the intention, and to be fair, I think that used to be the intention of the MCU too (I maintain you can watch Infinitt War without seeing anything else and be okay) - but we’ll see!
Right, I’m not denying you wouldn’t miss some things by missing those films - I’ve just heard stories of people whose first movie was Infinity War and they had a great time - I think this is due to solid storytelling g and focusing the story around Thanos - he collects almost every stone in the one movje
@@AccessBlockbusters I think it all comes down to intention. Example idk if u ever watched dragon ball but the writer intended for audience to watch dragon ball before dragon ball z but because of the way the writer wrote Z it basically made it to where u didn’t necessarily need og dragon ball to watch dbz It’s kinda like that with some of mcu movies. The intention was for u to watch things like civil war ragnorock etc to watch infinity war but because of how good it was people just had a fun time regardless of context or not. This is what I’m saying that wb/James Gunn should do with dc and that’s make it to where u only need each movie of a specific ip to understand whatever the next movie is Examples To understand teen titans 3 u only need titans 1 and 2 To understand Superman 2 u only need Superman 1 To understand Wonder Woman 3 u only need Wonder Woman 1 and 2 But there shouldn’t be a To understand justice league 2 u need Superman 1 and 2, Batman 1-3, Wonder Woman 1-2, teen titans, justice league dark, authority, etc etc etc that’s to much
Totally! I hear you - I’m more curious than anything else, I just want the projects themselves to be good. In terms of connectivity though, if you’ve seen Creature Commandos, Gunn seems like he’s already setting up the Justice League - who knows where it’ll go though!
This feels a little over generalized given we haven’t seen anything from his Superman film… I agree that the tone he sets in most other projects he does should not be the tone for Superman BUT I’m trusting that he knows that - we’ll see when the trailer comes out this week!
so sick of Waller, 2 movies, and 2 shows, and she has the same exact story every time. here is a team this is the badguy and in the end she is the badguy, so stupid and same type story for Creature Commandos
Yeah… I like Gunn and Viola Davis a lot but my worry has also been that every project he’s done so far has been the exact same in scope and style. But I think Superman will be different!
@rebelpunk13 and the movies and television shows are 2 completely different genres, and the DCU is its own thing, just like the MCU. It's not a 1 to 1 telling. They take parts and make it their own. Do you want the DCU to just retell the same story for Superman in 3 different films? how about Batman, wonder Woman, Flash, Green Lanterns? No! you want them to grow and evolve as a character.
What do you think about the DCU’s strategy? Let me know in the comments!
