That cold tolerance of H. bella is remarkable Doug! Can we start dreaming of growing Hoyas in our gardens year round? I've actually been doing a similar experiment with H. motoskei. Thus far it has survived nights down to 1C (or 34F) and is actually still growing! Thanks for another great video.

I love the new intro with the colorful circles. Wow great hoya bellas. That blonde one is definitely lovely. Congrats. You could have a new clone, cultivar whatever they call it. Yeah you should think of a good name for it for sure. I hope you can propigate it. It's like a seagreen or mint color.

That's Interesting Doug, the hoya bella took temperatures down to 30 and it was that cold it hung next to your frozen bird-bath. I'm happy to see you got something unique amongst your seedlings, and so vigorous is a bonus🌟I bought a hoya bella about a month ago. It dropped leaves for weeks until it settled down and leaves are now becoming green and some new growth happening. I keep it 'just' moist but not wet. Anyway thanks so much for your wonderful videos and have a great day

    • @DougChamberlainVTHoyas

You're welcome Newman. It turns out that the light colored strands that I called Blondie are not that special. I took cuttings and have rooted them to grow out; they are all darkening up to dark green. I believe that the reason that those strands were so light green now was because they were over watered. The leaves still are narrower than the regular Bella, but the pale color is now gone.

Dear Doug, I am glad that you managed to grow yours from seeds and even get a new kind of Hoya your unique 'Blondie wonder'. 👏🏅please, wait for the flower, take pictures and then propagate. Maybe you can help me, I'm puzzled by my Bella because for nearly a month is losing its beautiful, healthy looking and even thicker green leaves, the humidity is between 50-60. I live in London the temperature is around 65-71F, every day drops around six to ten bigger and stronger leaves, but is still growing from the tips new leaves and trying to grow peduncles which now are failing to mature into flowers. 🌟🌟🌟🌟🌟

    • @DougChamberlainVTHoyas
      @DougChamberlainVTHoyas  2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

Hi Silvana! My Blondie Bella was a bust. It turned out that it was only that color because it was chlorotic from too much water. I propagated it, and it turned regular green. As for your Bella, I have found that when a Bella starts to go bad by losing leaves continually, there is no easy way to bring it back to health. I have found the best solution is to start the plant over from cuttings. As to why your plant is losing leaves, I suspect that it either got over watered, or under watered and the roots are damaged in some way. Bella is a very finicky plant, and I can't say that I have ever mastered it. My issue with them is that frequently I get no leaf growth at the ends of the vines, and they get bare looking. Every new leaf fails to develop. I am suspecting some type of mite is causing this and I have just sprayed all of my plants with sulfur. We will see if it makes a difference.

Hi Maria, I absolutely love the Hoya Bella as well! Both my Lida buis and Anneke Buis look especially nice right now. The one that I was calling Blondie it turned out was only that color because it was chlorotic from a soil mix that held too much water. The one interesting thing that came out of those Bella seedlings is that I have one that only produces 3 leaves at every node rather than the usual 2. I am currently trying to propagate it. Do you also have the Bella that goes by the name Hoya paxtonii, it has really long narrow leaves and makes a really nice specimen. I highly recommend it!

Hi George! You certainly have a wonderful collection of Hoya bella! It truly is incredible that they continue to grow and do well at such low temperatures. I have discovered that they do far better under fluorescent light than under LED lighting for some reason. Do you grow the real Hoya engleriana or Hoya aff. engleriana Vietnam? The real engleriana has smaller leaves, is much harder to grow, and only gets four flowers on a peduncle.

By the way, Doug, if you ever added an ask and answer section to your website I bet a lot of us here would use it! You are the Hoya guru, after all! As it is, I actually had a question for you if you don't mind. Do you have any idea how to tell Hoya Panchoi and Hoya Carmalae apart? Old Blondie doesn't exist as such any longer. It was only that color because it was chlorotic from a waterlogged media. I have a new batch of Bella seedlings from a recent seedpod and we will see how they develop.

Nice to propagate. But you must keep some green leaves because they need to feed themselves (You know this.) by photosynthesis which needs the green chlorophyll for it to occur.

Hi Evlyne! It turns out that those leaves were not something new. They were simply light green because they were chlorotic. After propagating the plant, all leaves reverted to a darker green. The resulting plants do have slightly narrower leaves however and it does not seem as vigorous as the regular Bella.

The only white fungus that I can think of is powdery mildew. I think you did the right thing in getting rid of the worst of it. I've read that spraying the leaves off regularly with water will help prevent it. The spores must have traveled through the air or were brought to your plant via an insect. That is my best guess.

And she taught all of us a lesson by surviving that cold temperature and that lesson is that she can survive to at least 30 degrees make sure curious as to how much cold she can survive but no one wants to do that experiment! And thinking that you were going to just let her die outside makes my heart sad. I know it's a lot of work to get packages mailed but at the least she could have been cut back through the soil line and maybe put the cuttings on eBay or have a raffle for them you know giveaway! Take them to the local high school or Elementary School and let the children learn how to take care of them or the students and teachers. As a retired teacher I know I would have been very grateful to anyone who brought my students plant cuttings that we could try to grow into my classroom. We had a guest speaker one time for our countywide school system here in Maryland... Washington County. I think we have almost 30 elementary schools not sure how many middle or High School... Were you able to successfully propagate the "Blonde Bella"

It turns out that the Blonde Bella wasn't really blonde. It turns out it was simply chlorotic; after I propagated it, the plant reverted to dark green😥

Strange! I wonder if their flowering cycle is temperature or daylength related?

I'm very shock that hoya kanyakumariana groving in my house at winter as well :-) Also like Montana. Even the kenejiana red corona, Obovata growing too. Also we have a real winter in this year (also shock), so we heating, have a dry air and they still growing.

I'm very happy that your plants are growing! I'm thinking that you have more sun to work with than I do. Vermont can seem to go weeks without the sun showing its face. It is depressing for people and shuts down most plant growth as well.

    Hi is Bella hoya fragrant

It is barely fragrant. You can only smell the lightest perfume at night when there are a lot of flowers open.

@@givim80 Kind of way too early to say right now, but it would probably be sold on eBay under my eBay moniker: erbtarzan24. I would say we are looking at least a year and a half before that happens.

Oh my gosh you threw seedlings out! But I understand because I grew a whole bunch of tomato plants and other flowering plants and somehow or other priorities took over and somehow they didn't get watered and sadly they all kick the bucket so to speak and I was heartbroken! But once again I pay for the postage for you to just put them in a box and ship them to me teehee. If you ever want to get in touch with me about any of that go to my channel that's just Kathleen Murphy all you have to do is click the blue k and let me know and I get back in touch with you. I put my name and the word Hoya in the search engine and you'll find me. I check my comment section just about daily! I just started with orchids a couple years ago and that led to starting my TH-cam channel at the suggestion of someone who was giving good advice on orchid care on TH-cam. Her name is Carolyn her husband's name Jack and they combined both the names are there channels name and it is
j a c o l y n s orchids. I had no way to share my successes or failures with the Orchid so she suggested I start a TH-cam channel and I'd have a history of my interaction with my orchids for myself and then she could help me. I also have hundreds of houseplants and it seems like any more my life revolves around them but I love it. You are one of those special people that has the ability to focus on just one plant family and the knowledge you have of them it's so wonderful that you share that knowledge with all of us! God bless

Wow! I never even knew the name of Hitler's dog. I was thinking Blondie of the comic strip. Learn something new every day!
