The yellow curtains are yellow because the society is obviously sick- or maybe the author just wants them to be yellow.. god I hated that part of English class.
We were actually asked to analyse this video in my English class senior year. Suprisingly, none of us came up with anything enlightening about the video or pansexual salad bowl mouth.
"i was thinking about the blame music video for a bit, and this is my interpretation: the Nietzsche quote at the beginning “What can everyone do? Praise and blame. This is human virtue, this is human madness.” leads quite directly to the cult topic of the video. it is what humans do: they cling to religion (or things similiar to religion) to have something to hold on to, to believe in something, to get some hope. in dark times, with the media presenting new bad news every minute, the people feel hopeless and scared. all they can do is “praise and blame”. when watching the video, you get the feeling of the cult not being an independent group, but actually set up from someone from above. the radio (a symbol for the media) in the middle of the circle, the paintings of the eye (somebody is watching you), and the message with the kiss emoji everybody is getting… it all gives me the idea that the cult is actually set up by WWCOMMS in order to control the people (even when they are trying to escape this control). consider the formally dressed woman in the beginning, who is setting up the chairs: it all seems to be really planned. the kiss with the dark lips might be a symbol for the dark lies which WWCOMMS uses to manipulate the people. the way the reality and truth is distorted is shown with the distortion of the actual images. the people praise it for giving them something to believe in and something to hate (to wrongfully blame for their misery) as well. this manipulation is so very strong that it makes them go absolutely insane (notice the young man coming out of the cult room before the woman in the yellow dress enters it) and also gets them to take action according to the lies that were inforced in their brains. the water is a symbol for those wrong information and manipulation: the mouth is within it and when the woman in the yellow dress is firing her gun, water is coming out of it. she shoots somebody she is blaming for something (i reckon it’s about the blame for the bad situation the world is in), and the reason why she is blaming them, is, that WWCOMMS told her so. yet neither her nor anybody else notices the brainwashing. or they don’t want to notice it, because it gives them a sense of security in the “Wild World”. they need the lies.they get addicted to them. that’s why the woman wants “some water” at the end of the video." - grasstouch (someone on tumblr)
So, here's my theory about the video: In their second album, Bastille have tried to react to politics, to what's happening in this "wild "world" and our attitude towards all these events (warmth, the currents, snakes, the videolf fake it). So I tried to understand the video in this context. Undoubtedly, the water is a really important element. To me, it symbolises the words of politicians, who lie to us, say all the stuff that we want to hear and believe, in order to gain power. The members of the society crave for these words, which is why the people are kissing the black lips. After they kiss the lips, the people are in some kind of ecstasy, in an illusion, for they believe all these lies. Nevertheless, at the end of the video, the woman asks for "water". She asks the politicians to keep their promises, and of course they don't, they only give her a drop of "water" When people touch the red wall, it's like they consent to their passive attitude towards what politicians do. The gun could refer to violence, and it becomes "water" because by committing violence we help politicians gain power. When it comes to the big eye, I think it refers to the lack of privacy, since we're being watched and stalked through technology (people look at their phones at the beginning on the video. And how is this related to the song? Maybe we blame politicians for what's happening, or politicians blame each other. I'd like to know your own theorys too!
they didn't come up with it completely. these things happen everywhere in different forms of rituals and initiations. I assure you the origins are unequivocally unholy :-)
blurhhhh That upside down triangle was a symbol used by a group a loooooooog time ago. They used to worship water Gods, and stuff like that. Soooo, it kinda makes sense! I watched this music video by the morning, now it's 4pm, I'm watching Grimm and they Just talked about it. Yeah, that's pretty weird, but anyway.
they didn't because it is the only explicit song on the album. if it was on the normal edition of the album, which it would be as a single, then the whole album would be explicit.
That's... an intersting point of view!... Thank you for associating the concept and atmosphere of this video to those of that series... It's definitely a very rich perspective... I suppose...
I love how weird this videos are and how they don't revolve around the band members playing. This and their amazing songs makes the videos truly unique ❤
My 17 yo son and I have talked about this song. It always comes on when I take him to work. I always said it sounded like a dark song but very catchy. He agreed but mentioned how certain parts of the lyrics could reference to ''the Monkey's Paw.' I haven't seen a refence in lyric interpretation but given Dan Smith was a literature major makes me wonder, but also love that my son enjoys music as deeply as I do.
I love how every sensory organ is covered in some way. The Eyes are always watching them, the mouth is convincing them with both it's voice and it's touch, and they are listening with earphones.
Even though most music vids will follow some theme or another, most admit they are pulling out the stops and make them as weird silly and crazy as possible. Dont try to make a whole lot of sense from it, have fun and enjoy.
Thomas Luijkman oh no it's not. When bastille first recorded this song they made a music video but I think they took it down a few months before they released wild world. If ur Interested look up "blame complete version" that's the original recording
I genuinely love music videos like this! Everyone has (I assume) a different idea of what it means. How does this only have 1.7 million views? This has to be, in my opinion, one of the best songs of 2016 (and one of the best music vids). :)
So here's my explanation. The bowl seems to be some sort of attraction to what seems to be a kind of cult or following. The 'Alarm' the people receive in the video appears to be a calling to the 'events' or even a signal. The eye on the multiple walls seems to be the main attraction, probably the control point of everything. Also, notice (if I'm not mistaken), the guy with the swollen hand looks like the same lad from the send them off video, might suggest something if you link the two. (Edit) I reckon Dan got his inspiration for the song and video from the film "Eyes wide shut". I feel like its a mixture between The exorcist, Othello (Which he's mentioned on Twitter) and part II of the film. I've got to say bastille make it very hard each time to find the meanings of their videos, I've done my best, but I'm pretty certain this isn't related to drug abuse, although interpret it as you will, after all, it's what the guys at Bastille want us to do 😂
What is with everyone and satanism. Jesus read the book and tell me that it has anything to do with dark worship. I bet you 1,000 bucks you won't find anything unsavory
When they kiss the mouth / drink the water, they fall into the reality of their stereotypes. We are all to blame for judging, labeling, and categorizing. The only way these people can survive is if they keep consuming the false expectations (the water) that society sets for them. They have no idea that there is are entire bodies of water outside of that room.
Interpretations thread, people! Does anyone else feel like this was about social media, a little? I think it's about how social media tends to act like an echo chamber. Ties into Wild World's talk on "media". Firstly, the idea was that they got the call to the lip-cult thing through phones (social pressure) and there's the fact that everyone was shown wearing earphones (playing up of technology + interconnectedness) that guides me to this idea. Next is the prevalence of only the single eye and pair of lips as a symbol - there's only one viewpoint that's being used, only one message being propagated. No changes to the lips, no changes to the one eye. There's also the fact that people press their thumbs to the painting with the eye on it without changing the eye - almost like "liking" the viewpoint being shown. The fisheye lens in the video and the creepy eye lady kind of point towards the idea of a skewed viewpoint, something that isn't an accurate reflection of things. The dichotomy between the real world (the girl wanting water, the echoing room of people seemingly not doing anything) resembles an outsider perspective of someone using a phone or laptop to connect to any social network - with the vibrant inner world where everyone is ecstatic and religious being the people interacting on social media. (Praise and blame also make me think of ranking systems. Like, dislike.)
I think this video message is something related to the media.. The radio is a metaphor of media, and we always blame the media for any bad things that happen with our society.. IDK what the water actually mean...
Beth Williams yeah, nowadays we somehow worshipping the media and let it control us.. then there's some people said "see, the media bring bad influence to us" but the real thing is that we let it control us by worshipping it... so I think thats what the mv's have this message.. the people who entered the room after received the messages from their phone is how we always let the media to control us and follow things blindly... the mv's showed how the people in it somehow 'having fun' after hypnotize but actually they are in bad situation... that one showed how we are.. hmm what actually the water mean I'm curious :'(
MAYBE CANDLE hey, that's pretty good. I like your theory guys, plus I mean people blame on general right, maybe to just feel good, and also people also use media as a way to blame, blackmail people, and as you guys said, they are starting to worship media and use it for every single thing
I'm sure this video is about rehab, when your family can't handle it anymore so you go there and share your bad experiences with strangers that have the same problems, so you end up being a family united by blame.
99% of the time I understand the meaning behind and rarely on the video clips. Bastille is what helps me through the bullying I face at school. Also I swear I am there biggest Australian fan, I have all there songs and I know a fair bit about Dan smith
Best part of Bastille is interpreting the video and lyrics because it can be different things to different ppl and you look through the comments to find things you might have missed.
This the very first time Bastille disappoint me! I love every single song of this group. I was so excited to watch their new video. But it scared me so much I don't think I'll watch it again.
What the actual-? I'm very tired right now but here's my take on Bastille's new music video, hella weird as usual. This room is a kind of 'materialism' room. People gather to worship what they've made themselves and delight in them, no matter how dark and disgusting they truly are. Perhaps that was why someone left the room laughing, he realised how stupid it all was in the end, I guess. A very crazy laugh nontheless, perhaps he has been traumatized. They look like they're on drugs, and they all flinch when they have to kiss the strange mouth. Apparently it hurts but feels so good, they all participate and watch. Nobody was actually scared to do it, which shows that perhaps they're really sick in the head even before coming, and only the weak-minded and submissive ones came. In other words, perhaps brainwashed people! :) As usual, haha. The black water, what I think could represent wealth, cars, they keep kissing and praising it, dancing around it. They lose themselves in it. (and are not themselves in it in the end) And when one of them begins to realize she's lost purpose(and I'm supposing the man that's supposed to represent the monster made her remember for entertainment), she holds the gun against the monster she's created. Only to shoot herself. She goes back and repeats everything all over again. She almost realizes that there was no end to it. She submits once again to wealth and asks to indulge once again, despite having been destroyed the last time. Okay, even my explanation is weird.
Also, now that I think of it, according to conspiracy theorists, Illuminatis have always worshiped wealth. *Shrug* Just putting that out there. They're the perfect group in mind for this, lol.
What you're saying Som Ebody is actually correct. You're right on spot with how you're interrupting this. If you notice within just the past few years alone the music industry has gotten quite bold with "their coming out". There's so many examples it's crazy and I could spend the rest of my life explaining it and here's a good one, I'm Pagan, however don't confuse me or associate me with Satan as I'm Christian too. There's a few things I'll say which are key words and it'll all come together for you: Marina Abramovic and spirit cooking, Lady Gaga aka Stephanie Germanotta interview confessing illuminati relationship, Katy Perry Illuminati handler, that's just 3 examples. I could give you 3,000 instantly. Also think about Lady Gaga's disappearance from music and her return and how she dresses now. She also confesses she can't sleep alone because she sold her soul to the Satan and he taunts her. Think about Brittany Spears and how she flipped out. They call this a breakdown from being brainwashed and miscommunication from their handlers. Ellen Degenerous is Brittany's handler. Kanye West's breakdown at his concert is another example and now he's scared which is why he went to see Donald Trump because Trump is not with the illuminati. He was never supposed to win the election so it's all messed up and the illuminati is having issues with having a New World Order. Just be careful what you write I've said enough.
Ehh, I find conspiracy theories interesting, but, I don't really think that this is something confirmed and is definitely true. Nice to hear and know about, but I'm not too obsessed with it. I used to be.
They're voicing very strong words, if thats what you mean. They have been put on his earth by whatever being is out there to bring people together and show them the truths of our world. Simple as that. I have never heard more meaningful music than Bastilles.
Basically what i got from the lyrics and the video's potrayal. They are kissing a reflection of themselves which gives them back meaning of who they are, saying "this is my body and soul"
I feel like the meaning of the video shows us how much we rely on miracles, mysteries, and other things without having enough proof that it really is effective. For example, for Catholics, if we kiss a saint's feet, we'll get healed. In here, they believe that if they kiss the water, their life will change.
We should all be to blame for our Earth dying, is the point. They are constantly kissing the water and taking from it, surrounding it in the form of an AA meeting. At the end, the women shoots the gun which then turns to water, symbolizing the murder of water. And at the very end, she can only have a droplet of fresh water because they've run out.
IT IS hard too find the words too convey the joy, happiness and complete surprise by how everyone in this beautiful video so completely captured Everything and what Everything means too me and what I want IT too mean too everyone everywhere!! How you were able too put IT all together so completely blows my Mind :). the one thing I'm not clear on is why there is a gun since in this video? I hope more IS coming from you soon Bastille, I can't wait too see IT, peace and love, Doug:). PS All those who thirst drink freely as much as you want, need.

There’s something about their music that always has me listening to their songs on repeat but I don’t know what it is
They deserve more recognition
I think it's because of Danes beautiful, deep voice and their really special sound and style they have.
God I love his voice so much, I literally feel the music when he sings

This video describes perfectly how i feel when listening to Bastille
FlawsBerry yup, I think it's just the representation of the state of highness they put you in
So, here's my theory about the video:
In their second album, Bastille have tried to react to politics, to what's happening in this "wild "world" and our attitude towards all these events (warmth, the currents, snakes, the videolf fake it). So I tried to understand the video in this context.
Undoubtedly, the water is a really important element. To me, it symbolises the words of politicians, who lie to us, say all the stuff that we want to hear and believe, in order to gain power. The members of the society crave for these words, which is why the people are kissing the black lips.

Nevertheless, at the end of the video, the woman asks for "water". She asks the politicians to keep their promises, and of course they don't, they only give her a drop of "water"
When people touch the red wall, it's like they consent to their passive attitude towards what politicians do.
I love your theory! even though I am seeing this 2 years later.
This would make sense but take into account that the song is about gang violence
Very well said!
The fisheye view of the MV may also reflect the act of surveillance?
i read this like a russian borat
Quite an uncanny video, but we all have to admit that the song is absolutely phenomenal.
Absolutely...lol
Damn Daniel, back at it again with the weird ass music videos
Nice to see another Imagine Dragons and Bastille fan.
I must ask who do you think is cutest Dan Smith or Dan Reynolds?

Bastille is the most under appreciated band in the 2000's. Change my mind.
NO MATTER HOW HARD I TRY TO UNDERSTAND IT, I STILL CANT.

Hello fellow fans! Love this tune but this video is beyond me! Going to have to wait for someone to explain it
I feel like this has a really deep meaning
So here's my explanation.
The bowl seems to be some sort of attraction to what seems to be a kind of cult or following.

I think this video message is something related to the media.. The radio is a metaphor of media, and we always blame the media for any bad things that happen with our society.. IDK what the water actually mean...
HOLLOW Kind of like we've started worshiping media like we used to religion. We have a new system that control us and we follow 'religiously' idk
Beth Williams yeah, nowadays we somehow worshipping the media and let it control us.. then there's some people said "see, the media bring bad influence to us" but the real thing is that we let it control us by worshipping it... so I think thats what the mv's have this message.. the people who entered the room after received the messages from their phone is how we always let the media to control us and follow things blindly... the mv's showed how the people in it somehow 'having fun' after hypnotize but actually they are in bad situation... that one showed how we are.. hmm what actually the water mean I'm curious :'(
MAYBE CANDLE I think that the man drip feeding the water is kind of like how the media drip feeds us good news, just enough to keep us alive.
MAYBE CANDLE hey, that's pretty good. I like your theory guys, plus I mean people blame on general right, maybe to just feel good, and also people also use media as a way to blame, blackmail people, and as you guys said, they are starting to worship media and use it for every single thing
Yeah just like almost all the Wild World's songs, they are all related to media as a criticism. So I agree, I think this one was too.
I think this deserves more views
This music video is the definition of Bastille: quirky, but powerful
this is like the most unsettling music video i've ever seen but in a really good way
Man I love bastille and their weird videos that make me think.
I'm sure this video is about rehab, when your family can't handle it anymore so you go there and share your bad experiences with strangers that have the same problems, so you end up being a family united by blame.
uzun zamandır bastille dinlemiyodum iyi geldi. ☺☺
Selam Türk :D
PINAR DEMİR ve Aleykümselam 😄😄
99% of the time I understand the meaning behind and rarely on the video clips. Bastille is what helps me through the bullying I face at school. Also I swear I am there biggest Australian fan, I have all there songs and I know a fair bit about Dan smith
i love bastille! my sissy did a super job in the video!!
Fuck, I love bastille's videos. They're gorgeous, and you have a mad time trying to figure out what they mean
damn.. that was...
true tho Bastille just being Bastille. love it so much!
I don't think there's supposed to be a specific meaning. It means whatever you need it to be or want it to be.
Best part of Bastille is interpreting the video and lyrics because it can be different things to different ppl and you look through the comments to find things you might have missed.
Bastille always make these goth type of music videos. Love it
That's very Bastille,and i like it
bastille's video clip = wtf and i love it
I need a show like this now. I don't understand 100% of it but I love watching this.
This the very first time Bastille disappoint me! I love every single song of this group. I was so excited to watch their new video. But it scared me so much I don't think I'll watch it again.
This is why the Fire Nation attacked.
Honestly, you just made my day.
Dan Esp you made my day
love the avatar reference-- made my day
made my day
best refrence ever
(and are not themselves in it in the end)
And when one of them begins to realize she's lost purpose(and I'm supposing the man that's supposed to represent the monster made her remember for entertainment), she holds the gun against the monster she's created.
Som Ebody I totally agree, nice theory
Som Ebody You people read all this? Get a life
I love it when he sings "wrap your teeth around pavement"
This song and music video are r really outstanding. This is just to good to be overlooked. Brilliant from start to finish.
My favorite song on the album and one of my favourite music videos of all time
Estou viciado nesta música! s2
Here before 1 million
I love Bastille and they're my favorite band of all time, but I miss Bad Blood. Wild World is good but a little intense and intimidating.
Gracelyn Tedder I would say it's rather... wild
+SOMEWHEREINTHEGALAXY don't get me wrong, I still love them like crazy, but I'm just a little frightened by their recent work.
+Gracelyn Tedder maybe that's the point, to challenge society and make something in our brains click
+Gracelyn Tedder I get you
They're voicing very strong words, if thats what you mean. They have been put on his earth by whatever being is out there to bring people together and show them the truths of our world. Simple as that. I have never heard more meaningful music than Bastilles.
all their videos are so deep!
Bring this kind of videos back Dan pls!!!!
I actually LOVE the video for "Those Nights". But yeah, this video is fantastic.
I JUST REALIZED
THE WHOLE THING IS FILMED IN A FISH EYE LENS
AND THE FIRST LINE IS LITERALLY "YOU GO SLEEP WITH THE FISHES"
I'm the only one think this group is better than 1Direction.
yes, you're the only one in the whole word that thinks that ._.
Lol One Direction is nothing compared to Bastille
you're not
of course not wtf
duuh mate
I'm getting Counting Stars vibes from this video. Just without the alligator and the roof falling.
Notification squad where you at?!!
Noa Gerrits suuuuhh dude ✌🏼
Noa Gerrits 🙌🙋
🙌🏻🙌🏻🙌🏻❤️
Noa Gerrits here .
Noa Gerrits I am right here
I cant think of a bastille song i dont like
Neither can I, unlike the rest of the musicians. They are geniuses
And they are great live
Katrine B. Harr Dybdahl Have you gone to a live concert?
I saw them at the O2 in London! It was such an amazing experience 😍😍
Humayra Chowdhury i was there too! What date? I was nov 3rd
looking for someone to explain what I just watched
We should all be to blame for our Earth dying, is the point. They are constantly kissing the water and taking from it, surrounding it in the form of an AA meeting. At the end, the women shoots the gun which then turns to water, symbolizing the murder of water. And at the very end, she can only have a droplet of fresh water because they've run out.
Wolph Walkmonkey that makes so much sense, thank you so much
+Wolph Walkmonkey bro that shit was deep
I think the mv shows that we people keep kissing the lies and ignoring the reality that's why they're like possessed lol just in my opinion.
to me, water is a metaphor for everything thats mainstream. We are all blind and hypnotised by the trends and manipulated.
I got to hear this one in concert before it was officially released. :) I love this one.
