    We a rolling into the high end of the solar cycle so 10 meters should be great in a year or two. The fact that this radio has upper and lower sidebands is a real plus.

    having a communication receiver
    just to hear receive is a great idea.
    it helps. you don't always need a two way radio but it helps.

    For away from home, the ATS-120 Pro would be the best solution: it has all the capabilities of the ATS 25 Max in a much smaller size.

    Sync refers to synchronous detection. Basically an AM carrier is sampled at the peak of the RF waveform. The sample gate is only open for a short time, this cuts down on interference and noise. Sync detection can also sample at the zero crossing of the RF waveform. This will allow only phase changes to produce an output for FM mode. The sample timing must be phase locked to the carrier, or synchronous with it.

      You don't need to connect this radio to WIFI, its only reason for doing so is for FT8 reception and upgrading firmware, you could keep it disconnected forever and it would work perfectly as a shortwave radio, You can even turn WIFI off in the radio.

    • @JeffHochberg
      @JeffHochberg 2 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Wifi is not there to provide the ability to listen to RF. As mentioned it's purpose is to get time sync via NTP which is critical for FT8/FT4 encode/decode.
      The other purpose it likely provides is the ability to update the firmware on the device but I doubt it's used for receiving anything that would normally received over RF.
      Keep in mind that your money is much better spent on antennas than the radio. Be prepared to spend as much if not more on antennas than the cost of the radio, or spend time studying how to build your own. The chances of being able to receive anything of notable mention over the telescoping antennas is next to nothing.

    No sure why people go GA-GA over AM ? I live about 20 Miles ( or less from the capitol of the STATE...Alabama) and have 2 different radios. GEO-STORM and VOYAGER. I do NOT hear SQUAT on AM for either radio. is this because i live inside a small trailer? Would i need to be outside to hear AM? Don't hear SQUAT on the 2 SW bands on the VOYAGER. ????

      If you want the ability to monitor P25, you really need a scanner that's capable of working with trunked radio systems. The Uniden SDS100/SDS200 are FAR more capable of providing you with the type of monitoring capabilities you would need to receive P25 from municipalities.

    Doesn't transmit. Plenty of qrp radios that can transmit also. no need for license if it is an emergency where no other communications is available

    • @chublez
      @chublez 2 หลายเดือนก่อน +2

      FCC defines an emergency a bit different than you I suspect. For one you need to be in immediate danger to life/property.
      More importantly, if you're interested in this from a preper standpoint and not wanting to learn/license I'll say this. Everything else you prep, foods, tools, guns(?) do these things not require knowledge and practice to effectively use? Do you expect to just suddenly know how to cook from grain in you're closet if you've been ordering in? Build a shelter with tools in the packaging you've never used before? Load, operate, aim, successfully hit what you want and not what you don't with a firearm you never took out the box and trained with?
      HAM radio is technical and can be a lot to learn if it's outside yer wheelhouse. For those exact reasons though you should not expect to be able to just magic it work in an emergency.

    • @nathanr7931
      @nathanr7931 2 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

    • @mmcnew1
      @mmcnew1 2 หลายเดือนก่อน +3

      This is not a QRP radio. A QRP radio is a transceiver. This is an SDR *receiver* only. The price reflects that. QRP means using low power to transmit. A quality QRP transceiver, that has an SDR display, starts at about three hundred dollars more and up. And most of those don’t decode digital modes as a built in feature, although they may decode Morse code on the display in CW mode. For what this is and it’s intended purpose, it’s attractively priced.

    • @Joseph-pd5hh
      @Joseph-pd5hh หลายเดือนก่อน

      Your comment regarding no license required. I guess you can tell me, then at what authority determines when that emergency level is met ( where anybody can communicate on ham radios ) because there are plenty of emergencies that happen all over the place and knockout communications for weeks for people, and that’s when the licensed operators step up because we are the ones that keep communication open

  • @ExcuseMePhoney
    @ExcuseMePhoney หลายเดือนก่อน

    NO VHF + NO UHF + NO AIR BAND = TOTALLY WORTHLESS in most of the most common and most likely emergencies. 🤷‍♂️
    Listening to HAMs discuss a natural or man made disaster minutes or hours after the fact is useless apart from communicating for relatives to areas where phones are down.
    The emergency and dispatch frequencies will let you know what's happening in your neighborhood and surrounding vicinity in real time.
    This is just a toy for hobbyists.
