    This is episode 1 of #ROBINSPEAKS photography video podcast series.
    I am starting a new series of videos #ROBINSPEAKS just me speaking freely about any topic, in a podcast style format. That means I will be more relaxed, open and the videos will be longer in length (trying to cap at 30 minutes maximum length for now). I will still continue to make the usual weekly videos sharing tips/tricks on using Olympus gear, photography & shooting techniques as well as my shutter therapy adventures, that will still go on, rest assured. However in this new video series #ROBINSPEAKS I want to share a little more about myself, my thoughts and opinion on current photography trends, industry, new products, and speak up more freely.
    Kicking off this series, I will share why there are no reviews of the newly launched Olympus PEN E-P7 and the M.Zuiko 8-25mm F4 PRO, a little bit about the current total lockdown situation in Malaysia and how I am coping, an encounter with a jumping spider and my macro photography, as well as answering some popular questions in the comment section from my recent video!

    Hi Robin, I have a video suggestion for you! Maybe pick your 10 best photos ever, tell us their story, maybe the post-processing, photography tips to get something similar and so on. I've seen some great photos from you in these years, I would love to see your very best ones.

    • @robinwong

      Thanks for the suggestion! I think I will share more on photo-projects. It is not about showing the best photos, but being able to show them in a series and tell a story.

    I love this video, it feels so personal. Lockdowns are hard on one's mental health, especially when your business if suffering. I don't think anyone should expect you to entertain us with high quality photographic content while you're in lockdown. This video format is great, your subscribers can talk to you, you can talk to us, and hopefully we can all spread some happiness in these difficult times.

    When all this hell started and my event related business collapsed, one person gave me very usable advise: focus on opportunities only. Ofc her advise was rejected. But then I started to think and few months later my first book was released and now it was selled in decent amount of copies. And also it helped me to find a very fine job. So I'm pretty happy now. And I wish you to find your way out of this trap too!

    Really like the new format of your videos, checked ep. 2 before this. Agree with the problems of being able to keep the motivation when the conditions change and you are limited to your own 4 walls. For me, it is my health that limits my activities and then it is, among other things, your youtube clips that give time meaning when I can not use it for activities. I have spent many hours in company with you, Peter Forsgård, Rob Trek, Jimmy Cheng and Matti Sulanto learning about m 43 and photography through the years I have now been ill. So thank you for the time you spend sharing your knowledge and the style of your youtube studio suits you perfectly.

    Hey Robin, I am on the same boat, I got the lens two days AFTER the launch, yet no camera either. But frankly to correct your comment, not many ambassadors have the new lens/camera either, only a handful of them had, Peter included, but only for two days and very close to launch too, so he kind of rushed it. I think there's some miscommunications somewhere but OMDS has been restructured and the 'channels' we used to communicate is not longer there and there are too many broken links.

    • @robinwong
      @robinwong  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Well I counted a dozen or more reviews out there, and some of them got information about 8-25mm PRO a month before launch. I am perfectly fine not getting the products for early review, as you have said and I agreed, things are different now and I can accept that. But I think we all should be informed about newcoming products. How can we do our jobs as ambassadors when people ask us about the new products and our answers are "I don't know?" It reflects poorly on us, as if we aren't doing our jobs, and it reflects poorly on the brand too! I am not asking for the information to come like super early, but maybe few days before launch? Like a press release statement which was usually given to the media before launch! That would have made a whole world of difference.

    • @Red35Photography
      @Red35Photography 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@robinwong I agreed. I don't even have the spec either! In UK, I am kind of used to not receiving all info... yeah, believe me. I may got the products, but often I had to ask other people outside of Olympus to make my videos better as I simply couldn't get an answer. That's before though, but now, worst, I don't know launch date, product specs no launch statement... etc. All ambassadors should get the same ahead of the announcement, with or without products, we should get the same info as retailers, news agents. I hope OMDS realise it this time and rectify for future launches. But have to say that the worldwide ambassador program is a little.... weird these days. I think they are restructuring again and you may see some people go and new members as the direction of the products have shifted towards wildlife and outdoor.

    Robin, you've essentially mastered a genuine and contagious online personality, and you've developed a loyal following via your "realness" and inspirational photography videos. And you did all that with an unpopular camera brand in the US, from Malaysia.
    If I had to guess, the reason you may have been "forgotten" is because you're naturally, too excitedly, honest. Perhaps it's the other conversations down the road - roadmap questions, camera releases that are just repackaged gimmicks, etc., that are not what JIP want you officially, honestly reacting to.
    Your willingness to challenge the industry at large, the hype marketing of other TH-camrs, etc., is why your viewers trust you, and also why you might need to be more creative than other TH-camrs with regards to securing your income/product review streams.
    Keep going and growing dude. Chin up.

    Yes, I can understand how hard it can be in lockdown. I still can't believe why they didn't send you a sample of the 8-25 f4 no matter the situation. Olympus does not know how much money you have helped me spend on their gear. I'm not sure I want to buy that lens but you are very good at showing off the advantages of a piece of kit. Their bad.

      Thanks Evan, appreciate the kind words and show of support. It is ok, whether I get the review unit or not, life goes on. I have pre-ordered the lens and it will come in due time.

      @@robinwong I look forward to the review. I hope someone at JIP wakes up and gets you a copy before that happens. Your reviews and in particular the images on your blog helped me pull the trigger on a number of lenses. Someone was asleep at the switch this time. I got into Olympus first from Ming's blog and then from your continuation and expansion of the M4/3 side. The fact they forgot you makes me feel like an unforgotten customer. I hope they correct that.

    I can't imagine. I can't help but think these videos will help you manage the mental challenges of your lockdown. I'll be watching. As a novice photographer, I've been looking for content relating to composition and post processing. I know you've done some of that already but more would be welcome. Keep "doing this"!

    • @robinwong
      @robinwong  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thanks for being here and I appreciate that. I have indeed talked about composition and post-processing. However I also quickly realize that these two components are highly personal, and I need to allow my audience/other learning photographers to explore their own styles and experiment. I do want to focus more on the story-telling aspect of photography, or how to see/find interesting subjects. Focusing on "what" to shoot, rather than "how" to shoot. I think a lot of photographers miss that, and not many channels/photographers talk about this topic.

    • @davejsullivan
      @davejsullivan 3 ปีที่แล้ว

    Keep going with the series Robin!! I liked this video a lot. By the way, OMDS should take care of their visionaries, all of them. The 2 cameras and various lenses that I bought since I met you are all from Olympus. Latest is the M5-III with 12-45 which I love. That's all my gear, all from Olympus, and all because of Robin Wong. I'm pretty sure you are responsible of many Olympus gear purchases.

    Not even sending you a notice about the new gear seems to be typical "intern screwup": no way OMDS would ignore you on purpose. No way...

    • @robinwong
      @robinwong  3 ปีที่แล้ว +6

      Either an intern screwup (unlikely) or an intentional decision. Who knows at this point? And I honestly don't care any more. I will still do what I do here, that's not going to change.

    it must be really frustrating for you to be in such a heavy lockdown.
    Here in the Netherlands, we all complain about the rules while compared to the rules in your country, they are peanuts.

    So the thing I still don’t get is that you don’t even give your Olympus Visionaries a specific budget per year that they can spend freely on new gear. Robin, without you and Peter Førsgard I would never have bought my first EM10-3 and recently my EM1-2 with both pro lenses to cover 14-150. It’s the two of you who make the inspiration video’s and show us all the possibilities with the gear. But as well, you push me unknowingly to create better pictures each time. Keep on going, lockdowns ain’t easy, but your community is here for you with their online support!

    This was a good video, Robin. Glad to see the jumping spider made for a good muse. They are a favorite subject of mine, as I really like them. If you upgrade your gear in the near future.... I recommend four large drones. You can tie them to a lawn chair & make your escape. :vD Regards!

    Well, I'm joining peoples who write comments about your appearance. I think you're looking very good. I especially like your pectorals. :-) But, I'm watching your videos mainly to learn more about using my Olympus E-M1 mk III. I love this camera! Not only it's very well built and lens are incredibly SHARP, but It's much easier to use with my partial vision. I can read what is displayed in the viewfinder much more easily than all other cameras I tried in this price range.

    I wonder if OMD Digital Solutions didn't include Malaysia in the announcement and test samples of the new gear because of the lockdown and Malaysia's law against photography outside? Perhaps they were concerned about what would be considered breaking the law and didn't want to cause issues for visionaries there?
    I hope things improve for you soon. Life is quickly becoming more normal here in the US since the vaccine rollout.

      I had the same thought in regard to the sample items. But yes, they could have at least furnished information. If your rep didn't know, then it does sound like a main office intern screw-up. Let's just hope they patch that so there are no repeats.

    I live in the US, but I’ve been to Japan in August. One thing that struck me was even in air conditioned spaces the temperature was 10-15 degrees F higher than you would find in an air conditioned space in a US business or home. Maybe Maylasia is similar? I’m sure I’d be sweating profusely in Maylasia. Don’t worry too much about what others think. They should just be grateful for their privilege and their comfort, instead of being petty and critical.

    Robin don't feel too much pressure to keep putting out content. If you have to, take a couple weeks off. Make plans for when things reopen. Its too hard to do anything in a lockdown as its limiting and depressing. When you finally get freedom to put something out worthwhile your viewers will jump on it straight away. You do great work. We arent going anywhere. Chin up brother!
