Jon Hassell / Peter Freeman - Bluescreen Project - The Vertical Collection

  • Label: Earshot Records ‎- ES01
    Country: France
    Released: 1997
Genre: Electronic, Jazz, Folk, World, & Country
    Style: Abstract, Techno, Tribal, Ambient
Imagine all the music of a single composer "exploded" into constituent parts which are then reassembled into new works. Some of these parts could be more or less intact and recognizable, some could be stretched, reversed, pitch-changed and filtered into a vastly unfamiliar "topography" - like a look at the secret world of insects or coral through a microscope. Since musical elements whose first appearance was in different recordings and different compositions, made years apart, are now heard simultaneously in the same texture, this is a "vertical" collection of works - in contrast to the conventional "horizontal" collection of selected tracks from previous recordings. These pieces - originally intended as sketches for larger forms - were imaginatively assembled by Peter Freeman under the guidance of Jon Hassel, whose "Fourth World" music is the exclusive source of all the sounds.

I find it near impossible to have a favorite Jon Hassell album. There’s such a ridiculous amount of experience to be had with each song, and the blissful journey is, for me anyhow, shaded differently each time I listen. I was going to upload some of his ECM gems but it looks like others have had copyright issues already doing so.

I've been listening to Jon since the 1970s. Most people don't know he was on the original recording of Terry Riley's "In C". Jon's a very interesting composer.

RIGHT?! At this point I'm not super impressed with how Mr. Hassell's legacy is being handled. A (re-) re-release of the City box wasn't necessary. Making the rarities, alternate mixes, unreleased live stuff should be the goal. Plus I'm sure there is a lot more archival late-period studio stuff that could be curated (maybe Rick Cox is the guy for that job....). Anyways, I hope Ndeya and/or All Saints and/or ECM are on it.

Consonant Dissonant Ignorant Cognizant dorengarcia.com :free more avant guarde but I'm a long time Hassell fans and both of us are fans of mid period Miles Davis. My stuff is microtonal but not so most people would notice.

«Jon Hassell» onu her dinlediğimde beni kendi yalanlarımla yüzleşmeye zorluyor.

Unfortunately, IMHO this doesn't really add anything to the music of Jon Hassell. The sections samples are so familiar, that, for me, their relocation/recollocation doesn't really work. Also, the timing and nuance of the originals feels far more fluid that the predictable repetition of these. It feels similar to as if someone had sampled Mozart or Beethoven, and the reassembled a collage of the pieces. I applaud the idea, and the production values are high, but kinda doesn't work for me. Apologies Peter. Just my opinion.
