The ocean can symbolize all kinds of feelings for people born on the islands of Southeast Asia, from romantic love to nostalgia. “Jellyfish,” written by Sunset Rollercoaster’s drummer Tsun-Lung, tells of a lonely jellyfish’s breakup story. As for Michael Seyer, the sound of waves brings him back to Manila, and everything he sees and feels-the sunset, trees, and breeze-are all part of Manila, his home in memories.

An explanation for those confused:
So the basic plot/cinematography is a reference to the lyrics (and original music video!) of "我是一隻魚I'm a fish" by Richie Jen, which Sunset Rollercoaster covered beautifully in the past. The description of this video states that Tsun-Lung wrote 'Jellyfish' with a lonely breakup story in mind -- all of this will tie in nicely and make sense thematically in a minute so bear with me.
The man in red is the fish who is presumably in a relationship with the lady in white, who caught him out of the sea. We see him struggling to breathe since he's a fish out of water. The lady in white sprays him down with water while holding an umbrella (confusing, right?). Further along, at 2:38, we see both of them walking under the umbrella until suddenly, he stops while she continue moving forward with the umbrella in hand (!). Then, a shot of the umbrella thrown away into the air. The lady in white pleads with the man to not die. Then, a hard cut to the man lying on his side on the floor while the woman leaves him and neatly puts away the umbrella (3:06).
What the fuck is going on?!
To understand, we need to read the lyrics of '我是一隻魚I'm a fish'. In this song, it's also a story of heartbreak and someone trying to move on. The man desperately misses his ex, stating that without her he's like a fish out of water who can't breathe/survive for long since she's the air in the water he needs to breathe:
像我和你需要下一場雨. ---- me and you need a shower of rain
需要你 我是一隻魚 --- I need you, I am a fish
水裡的空氣 --- the air in the water [that I breathe]
是你小心眼和壞脾氣 --- is your pettiness and your terrible temper
沒有你 像離開水的魚 --- without you, I'm like a fish out of water
快要活不下去 --- that won't live very long
不能在一起游來游去 --- we can no longer swim together
Things are starting to make sense! The water she's spraying is so that he can breathe and survive (perhaps symbolizing their time together, since she is the air in the water that he breathes) and when they both walk under the same umbrella, it's a reference to the first lyric line where both of them need rain. When she continues moving forward with the umbrella without him, when the umbrella is thrown away, and when she neatly puts away the umbrella at 3:06, this is all a metaphor for how in her eyes, the relationship has ended conclusively. She tells him not to die since she won't be there anymore and leaves while he lays pathetically on his side and convulses like a fish struggling to breathe.
At this point, I'm not quite sure how to interpret the lady in black. I don't think she is real (see 6:03) and might symbolize the loneliness/depression he's suffering through, especially since she's only introduced in the story after the mysterious voice says 'eat him' at 4:00. Furthermore, the lady in white leaves the man forever by going up the stairs and in exchange for her, we get the lady in black coming down from those same stairs. The plate at the end with only the man's ear piercings left might be a metaphor for how the man lost against his depression and was 'eaten'. Extra sad because right before his death is a shot of him with tears rolling down his face while he reminisces about his time with the lady in white :'(
Two beautiful songs by Sunset Rollercoaster, amazing cinematography/directing/writing/styling, and overall just an incredibly unique and artistic concept that pays homage to one of the greatest C-pop artists of the 90's and 2000's. Fantastically well done by the whole team!! I can't wait for more of Sunset Rollercoaster's music and what else they can do creatively.
PS: I assume the clipping of those tags at 1:44 are in reference to the first minute of the Riche Jen music video. Not quite sure the significance so if anyone knows please tell me!
P.P.S: If any of Sunset Rollercoaster is reading this, please drop more merch and come to Texas dammit!!!
