    The monastery was Lindisfarne. The raid at lindisfarne is by many counted as the start of the viking - saxon conflict. And the language you wondered about is supposed to be anglo-saxon.

    It doesn't make sense to you that they killed all the monks because.... it really doesn't make sense.
    In reality it went like: "Give me your stuff and we'll leave you alone."
    Otherwise people would start resisting and casualties will happen to both sides.
    But that would make a boring series...

      well, but if im not mistaken, the real raid that was depicted in this scene did end up with the vikings killing a lot of the monks, enslaving others too.
      I would say that it could be also a reason for going this particular way in the show.
      And to had a bit to that theory is that a lot of other raids shown in the series are not really "going in there and kill everyone" like this one.
