The SS United States, once the fastest ocean liner to cross the Atlantic, is now on its final journey to become the world’s largest artificial reef off the Florida coast. After sitting unused at a Philadelphia pier for nearly three decades, its trip to Alabama has been delayed due to logistical issues, safety concerns, and required Coast Guard documentation. Okaloosa County plans to sink the ship 20 miles off Florida’s Panhandle, though if it remains at Pier 82 past December 12, a $100,000 penalty will be imposed.
