      And!
I was in a 134k crowd too. So what.
      Besides unwanted history remains hidden!

My dad went up to that game. He bumped into someone from his street amongst all those Scots. Over 130000 in the ground. I went up to hampden to see Queens Park v East Stirlingshire 20 years ago & the crowd was under 500. The crowds they got pre restrictions were amazing.

It’s dangerous to have that many people in these modern stadiums because they build stadiums very steep nowadays so the stadium would have to be extremely high up

+hard copy I remember David Baddiel commentating on old Hampden footage: "Very poor attendance for this match. There wasn't quite room for everybody in the whole country."

I hate when people sneer at our game.Every single European attendance record was achieved in this stadium....

No one sneered at the time.

      I certainly don't sneer mate.
I've always had time for the Scottish game.
My earliest memories of football were when Dundee United were Scottish champions.
The top Scottish sides of the time were more than a match for the English sides and for most European sides for that matter.
Money has distorted the entire game.

Which sets alarm bells ringing. Scottish attendance figures have always been dubious at best and it continues to this day. Celtic always announce their crowds as 58k or there-abouts yet unless they're playing Rangers the place is half empty. There are as many empty green seats as fans.

There have been a few larger attendances at Hampden even than that.

Unofficially there's been closer to 160,000 as an estimate because of all the fans, mainly youngsters climbing over the wall to get in.

    Loved the old Hampden.
You didnt need to you to the toilets.....they came to you.
A constant stream of urine cascaded down the terraces the whole match.
    Ah. Those were the days.

just as it was (for the AWAY fans ahem) at Wembley for my first England v Scotland game, in 79. Despite the Jocks being banned the stadium was 9/10 full of them. Never forget seeing a couple of supposedly "grown adult" Jocks running around with their own turds in their hands.... classy.

Mind you, I attended a game at the old Wembley during its last season. Toilets were so crowded, Bristol City fans pissing in the concourse. 😃

This was England’s first defeat to Scotland in Scotland since Scotland beat England 3-1 at Hampden Park in 1937 in front of 149,415. At the time it was a world record attendance but has since been beaten by Brazil vs Uruguay in 1950. It remains a European record attendance.
Between 1937 and 1962 England’s record at Hampden Park was very impressive: 1939 Scotland 1-2 England, 1948 Scotland 0-2 England, 1950 Scotland 0-1 England, 1952 Scotland 1-2 England, 1954 Scotland 2-4 England, 1956 Scotland 1-1 England, 1958 Scotland 0-4 England and 1960 Scotland 1-1 England. Eight matches- six wins for England and two draws.

Despite that Scotland were ahead in the head to head between the teams and remained that way to the 1980's.

Wow, thats a crowd. Pre Ibrox disaster of course, but I guess its no surprise the restrictions came in, seems inevitable looking at this. Looks and seems SO long ago, but it's the year I was born lol. Thanks for posting !

No roof, athletics track around it but absolutely amazing. Today's stadia tend to be like little libraries in comparison.
