  • This is a video of Peter Gabriel performing his song “Biko” as the second encore of his I/O tour in Seattle on October 8th, 2023.

I bought the single of this in 1980 at the end of the summer before my last year kf secondary school. It’s been a song and a story that has stayed with me for most of my life. Amazing to see PG perform it live. I had spent the summer making sandwiches in a beach cafe. I had a couple tapes Ian Balfe had made for me bust listened most to Peter Gabriel’s second album
The song is a tribute to Steve Biko, a South African anti-apartheid activist who died in police custody in 1977. Biko was the founder of the Black Consciousness Movement, which aimed to empower black people and challenge the white-minority rule in South Africa.
Peter Gabriel wrote the song after hearing of Biko’s death on the news. He was moved by Biko’s courage and sacrifice, and wanted to raise awareness of the oppression and violence under apartheid. The song features phrases in Xhosa, Biko’s native language, and recordings of songs sung at Biko’s funeral. The song was banned in South Africa, but became an international anthem for human rights and social justice.
Peter Gabriel is an English singer, songwriter, record producer, and activist. He rose to fame as the original lead singer of the progressive rock band Genesis, but left in 1975 to pursue a solo career. He has released 11 studio albums, including his best-selling album So (1986), which featured hits like “Sledgehammer”, “Don’t Give Up”, and “In Your Eyes”. He has also composed soundtracks for films such as The Last Temptation of Christ (1988), Rabbit-Proof Fence (2002), and Wall-E (2008).
Gabriel has been a champion of world music and a pioneer of digital distribution methods for music. He co-founded the WOMAD festival in 1982 and the Real World Records label in 1989. He has also been involved in numerous humanitarian causes, such as Amnesty International, Witness, The Elders, and Greenpeace. He has won several awards for his music and activism, including six Grammy Awards, thirteen MTV Video Music Awards, the Polar Music Prize, and the Man of Peace award. He was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame as a member of Genesis in 2010, and as a solo artist in 2014.
The I/O tour is Gabriel’s latest tour, which showcases his new album I/O (2023), as well as some of his classic songs. The tour features innovative visual effects, such as holograms, projections, and interactive elements. The tour also supports various environmental and social initiatives, such as planting trees, reducing plastic waste, and promoting local artists.
Enjoy this powerful performance of “Biko” by Peter Gabriel, a song that honors a hero and inspires a movement.

My heart to yours Stephen!!! You came into mind just of late, May 2024, because of what a political opponent has done here in the United States. NEVER can this be allowed ANYWHERE!!!

I remember watching it on a snowy B/W TV in the uk when it was broadcast and was blown away. I had just bought a Roland SH-101 synth and had no idea things like the fairlight existed. It was a mind opening documentary, still is!
