- The Divine Liturgy, θεία λειτουργία, of St. John Chrysostom is the second most practiced Liturgy in Christendom (next to the Roman rite Mass). This video is a tribute to the great Liturgy of the east, not a live presentation of it. This is the primarily used Divine Liturgy of the Eastern Churches of (Catholic and Schismatic) namely the Byzantine Catholics, Russian Orthodox, and Greek Orthodox. This video contains a number of images of the Liturgy in practice across a wide array of churches and rites.

Nothing so beautiful! When I have participated in the Divine Liturgy I feel that I have truly worshipped God and I feel thoroughly fulfilled.

This is an awesome recording of choral music sung by one of the world's great vocal ensembles. In this clip we hear parts of the Liturgy of St. John Chrysostom composed by various composers, who over time, have written magnificent music for the Byzantine Churches, both Orthodox and Greek Catholic. For example, the music at 9:10 is the famous Lord's Prayer (Oche Nash) by Bordniansky, while at 3"42, the Cherubic Hymn is that of Tchaikovsky. Rachmaninov has also composed a Divine Liturgy and more recently, Metropolitan Hilarion (Alfayev) of the Russian Orthodox Church, a composer, himself, has composed his own Divine Liturgy of St. John Chrysostom, which is available on CD with the composer as celebrant during the actual celebration of the service.

Well, to be honest, even though I was baptized, and have received my sacraments in the Roman church, I have, however, been an altar boy and did participate in Byzantine liturgies throughout my preteen years (this was, like, 20 years ago). However, ever since the Monsignor passed away, I've went back to the Roman Rite, but...I think after this, I might feel inspired to return to the Eastern Church sooner rather than later.

If you want to feel that in the Latin Rite, go to the Traditional Latin Mass or Tridentine Mass or the Extraordinary Form of the Roman Rite: then you'll see how similar we USED to be to the Eastern traditions, we've abandoned ours for 50 years and counting now...sigh*
Are you familiar with Western Rite Orthodoxy? The Apostolic Church has what our Western brothers and sisters lost, the Mass that was stolen from them by rebellious and schismatic bishops.
Traditional Catholic chapels have kept the Faith alive since 1968. Father Gommar DePauw Ave Maria chapel Westbury Long Island was among the first.

The term "Extraordinary Form" is cognitive dissonance. "Quo Primum Tempore" overrules so called "Ecclesia Dei" and the ill advised confused ill meaning "Summorum Pontificum" which ends by hoping for both "Rites" to intertwine and influence each other. No thank you.

Paul Robinson: The language they are singing in is Old Church Slavonic, which precedes many Slavic languages such as Ukrainian and Russian. That is why you cannot pick out any words. ;)
roxanneisaac true but Russians can. It is very similar to how we talk today. A few words sound different but the ancient atmosphere is majestic and adds so much to Liturgy. I hope nobody will ever "move toward modern forms" and re-write it in a more simplistic manner.

The only problem with that is that the new generations, namely the millennials, do not understand much of the language, and therefore something like "Let us attend, let us hear the Holy Gospel", would come out sounding silly or weird like "I'm sorry, let us hear the Holy Gospel". The language should be updated, but the poetic nature of it should be carefully left intact, and not merely making it more simple. That doesn't solve the problem either. It is very important the . Either that or somehow give Slavonic language lessons to people to correct their understanding of the words. The "majestic" "ancient atmosphere" does need to remain intact. This is very important, I agree with you there. :)

Greek Catholics or Ukrainian Uniates are a Byzantine Church in union with the Holy See of Rome. They use this liturgy. Some Ukrainian Greek Catholic composers even wrote some of the most outstanding pieces of music in frequent use in the Russian Orthodox Church.

Was it Peter the Great who made the Russian Orthodox comply with the Greek Byzantine Liturgy and Sacramental Rites?
There's two types of WRO Churches, those based off an Anglican type tradition (the Sarum) and those more on the Latin side (Gregorian). Neither are allowed to use unleavened bread and both are forced to use an explicit epiclesis. I'm a Roman Catholic.

I grew up with this liturgy, But I like very much the traditional catholic mass too, not novus ordo.
This is sung in Old Church Slavonic.
Ecce dies veniunt, dicit Dominus, et suscitabo verbum bonum, quod locutus sum ad domum Israel et ad domum Iuda. In diebus illis et in tempore illo germinare faciam David germen iustitiae, et faciet iudicium et iustitiam in terra; in diebus illis salvabitur Iuda, et Ierusalem habitabit confidenter, et hoc est nomen quod vocabunt eum:
DOMINUS IUSTUS NOSTER.
It's a pity that there are mostly only russian (and new westernized) music here and not even one example of byzantine chant or old slavic znamenny chant.
If you need byzantine chant, then "google" it.

If one will listen to the Sarum Rite, which forms the basis of the Anglo-Catholic traditions, it actually has a much richer sound than the Tridentine Rite that was imposed by Rome after the Council of Trent. As a Lutheran, I will say that a good number of our hymns are not quite up to to par as that of the St. John Crysostom Liturgy, but Martin Luther was trying to get the Word to the people in their language--the High German language.

Where can I find traditional Liturgical language Eastern Rite Divine Liturgy? Been wanting to assist at 1 for decades. Looked online,most Eastern Rite Catholics use vernacular & so called "1990 updated Liturgical Rites."
