I entirely agree on the Savinellis: great quality, wide array of choice, beautiful craftsmanship, no nonsense classic aesthetic, and at reasonable prices. I started out with one more than thirty years ago, and I’ve loved them ever since. Your Stanwells are also a great option, as are Petersons. ADDENDUM (edit): Just stumbled onto your excellent channel and immediately subscribed. Greetings from Greece! 🇩🇰🇬🇷

Hi Thomas. I agree with you - both in regard to Savinelli pipes in general, and in regard to the Savinelli 673 specifically. John Harden (Matches860) gave some excellent advice when he recommended Savinelli pipes. I haven't made the jump into custom-made artisan pipes, even though some look very nice. And a big reason I haven't made that jump is because I'm so happy with my Savinelli pipes.

Nice choice. I’ve have not smoked a Savinelli but they are very sought after. I enjoy the classic look and shapes like you do. I hope you continue to produce videos.😎 I have many Charles Rattray 9mm filter pipes in briar and love each one of them. Happy New Year!

I've just come across you channel yesterday, I really enjoyed this vid, I'm fairly new to pipes (just under 2 years). I'm currently at a similar point with the Savinelli's where I moved from my original Cob to a 626, this was my only pipe for a while, until I picked up a second Savinelli (can't remember the number). I'm currently debating picking up a 320 for a different experience.

The weight issue is more true as compared to basic or hand-made pipes, I think, which can be quite a bit heavier. Brands of the same level are more or less comparable. Big Ben and Peterson are similar in weight overall. I have found Vauen to be on the heavier side, though not uncomfortable and, for the most part, quite enjoyable.
Then, there is also the shape. Some shapes are by size and design lighter, e.g., for hands-free smoking, while others can be either heavier, bulkier, or both. So, e.g., of the Savinellis, my Siena is quite bulky, but light, while my old and trusted Aurelia (almost an Antique now, second pipe I bought back in 2000) is slightly heavier, while smaller. Probably my absolute lightest (and also one of my top three) is the 207 Avorio; I have yet to smoke a lighter pipe. But here's the thing: it is actually the same weight as one of my bent Big Bens, and yet I *perceive* the Avorio lighter. This is because of the shape and balance, not actual weight.
Savinelli pipes are indeed excellent, won't argue with that. Superior, in my view, to many others. Actually, I would rate them higher than Dunhill which are, of course, excellent, but are massively overpriced, with a pipe comparable in quality to a higher-tier Savinelli costing two or three times more. I have yet to find a good reason to shell out £600 on a pipe.
I will add a small caveat. You can find an off the rack, cheaper pipe which could be excellent in quality, even superior to branded ones. Where the problem lies is that this is hit and miss, and a matter of chance, while an established pipe-maker offers a certain consistency of quality. So, buying a Savinelli, or even a Vauen carries with it quality guarantee, it will always be a good pipe. And if something is or goes wrong, they can replace it. With a mystery pipe you are essentially leaving it to chance.

I’m a new pipe smoker, a Savinelli 601 was my first pipe and I love it. Never be hesitant to buy quality. I’m waiting on my second pipe, a Peterson. Now I’ll pause for a spell before I geek out and buy more. That’s what hobbies are for, geeking out!

I have 32 pipes in my collection, and 15 are Savinellis. I smoke most of them on a regular basis and am partial to Lumbermen, Canadians, and Lovats, with a few bents thrown in for variety. The quarter bent pots are good smokers, too. For the money and quality they can't be beaten. I have a few artisan pipes bought as estates, and I enjoy them a lot. Variety is the spice of life.

32 is a good enough sized collection that your experience would be beneficial to me in the form of a particular question:
If you could only keep 1 of those 32 pipes to smoke out of... which one would it be?
The answer would save me from spending thousands of dollars to find that 'best out of 32' pipe, and I would be in your debt, sir.

I have 3 savinelli pipes. I can't say they are my favourites. I wanted to love peterson but they are always misshapen. Rattrays and barling pipes are my absolute favourites though. Especially barling. They have great shapes sizes and looks. Saying all of this my favourite pipe was made for me by Chris @oisasou briars here in youtube... the man is amazing... hands down the best pipe i have ever smoked in my life.. thanks for the video and opening up the discussion 😀

Great looking pipe, I have a few Savinelli’s my favorite is my Clark’s Favorite it keeps smoke dry and cool, bowl a little small but it helps me pace myself. I also have a Peterson 2019 Christmas that is great and I added a filter to it by boring out the stem myself works great - I have a Nordik too but not as fond of that one only because of shape - It’s easy to get carried away you will have many more, it can’t be avoided :)

I have two Savinellis and love them. I smoke them when I can sit and not clench them. The rest of my pipes are from Paul’s Pipe Shop in Flint, Michigan, their Cayuga line. Those smoke great and cost less than $100. On average, $65-75. I don’t mind chewing on them, dropping them and dinging them up. There’s a time and place for both. Nice video!

My Savinelli journey didn’t start so well. My 1st and only Savinelli is a 320KS, and the draft hole at the button came to me at under 2mm, and trying to get the flame drawn down to light the tobacco was like trying to suck a thick malted shake through a straw. When I took the stem off I could barely feel air being blown thru it. I had to drill out the hole on the button end up to the bend with a 2.5mm drill bit. After doing that the air flows through it very good now. I’m not giving up on Savinelli, but unfortunately didn’t have the best first impression.

Oh yes. I have four Rossi's and five Savinelli's. To be honest my Rossi's smoke just as good as my Savinelli's. Most of my collection is vintage Dr. Grabows, vintage Kaywoodies, old Willards, and some Mastercraft pipes. I have a few John Middleton pipes from the 40s and 50s also. But my Savinelli's and Rossi's get smoked the most.

I have three Savinelli’s, my latest is the Bings Favorite Rustic. It’s a wonderful little pipe!
But I found a wonderful artisan pipe maker that has a real niche pipe worth checking out.
His pipe name is “Grunewald Pipes” and you can see him on his TH-cam VR’s under “Pipes of Old”, check out his pipes! Pipe on!

Wholeheartedly agree with you. I have every one of the 673 models, the Duca Carlo variant, and several Rossi 8673s. The Savinelli Roma 673 KS, aka George Bruno's "Sultanelli", is the very best of the lot.

I was interested in the Tortuga for looks. I'm curious about the cute little cap that it comes with. Is that only for when it's cold and on the shelf and empty to keep dust out? Or is there a secondary use for the cap? Will the cap fit on while it's loaded?

    • @canadablake
      @canadablake หลายเดือนก่อน +1

@@DerekMoore82 out of the three I find the 920’s are less forgiving and can smoke a bit hot if you pack too tight or smoke too fast. The chambers are cone shaped as opposed to straight walled, and the walls can be thin around the halfway point. The 121 and 673 are pretty consistent and more forgiving to user error. If you put all three in front of me, I would probably choose the 673 with the 121 a very close second.

I made the jump to Savinelli...and landed flat on my face.
My 'el cheapo' Legend cobs smoke just as good as that pretentious line up.
They are supposed to take a 6mm filter. Uh huh.
I had to put a 6.5mm drill bit into the shank to make the filters fit. Then to my chagrin, I find there is a plastic sleeve inside the shank. Which I removed and now the filters fit OK.
    Poor design IMO.
And $12 as opposed to $115, makes cobs a far better option. At least for me.
I'll stay with the cobs, thanks!

I can't use cobs because of my bad habit of smoking too fast and heavy. The heat builds up too much and breaks the cob for me. I've tried 3 and all of them burnt out within 2 days. Wouldn't be an issue for someone who puffs the proper pace, but I can't help myself.
